Havent posted in a few days. I have finals coming up and have been busy x.x

Anywayz. I am liking the Double dose of R thing so far. He hasn't needed it all the time.. or well he might have, but by the time his number was high enough to get his second dose of R.. it was too close to PS.. and he frequently drops by +2 of The PS.. so.. I don't know, maybe ill give a +11 R dose a go if needed. Im currently following the R scale quoted below.. or trying to at least. I think in the end to really make this work though, I will need to start doing this at both am and pm cycles maybe.. or at least the 1 dose of R for the night cycle at +9 or 10 im thinking..

I need to buy more alarm clocks. I have 4 alarm clocks currently to wake me up at diff times for coco just in case i fall asleep or something xD

I def like some of these double R cycles though, I don't know about raising lev anymore.. hes getting in the blue zone now where I draw my mental line of that's good enough.. but Maybe he needs it and i cant tell. every cycle looks kinda diff for coco so I'm not sure. there are some higher ones and some lower ones..

and then 6/12 am cycle... I have no comment on it.. It was just odd to me.. I think i should double checked that blue maybe.. then it just shot up really fast x.x

so i don't have today's numbers yet. But I'm posting this now because i don't give his shots til 11:30 am and pm..

I also have an off topic question.. Coco has a weight loss problem. We cannot keep the weight on him right now. I t seems like he is dwindling away.. I am up to 20 ish oz of food a day.. fancy feast varieties. They make his feces smell really really bad.. enough to fill our whole house with a very putrid smell lol. and they are very very soft. I wouldn't say diarrhea soft, but pretty mushy looking. I don't think he had these problems on the friskies special diet foods.. I'm thinking of switching back. But the whole cheap food, with low quality ingredients irritates me ._. I'm wondering if its maybe byproducts or something that is making his digestive system go crazy.. I'm going to switch back to friskies special diet for now.. hopefully that works.. but my main question is. what can i feed him to help him gain weight.. I tried like chicken thighs with the fat on em still.. and adding more food.. doesn't seem to be helping any.. Is this just a part of being unregulated? Last blood check showed no hyperthyroid.. so i assume that cant be it..

oh. and this is the R scale im currently following for Coco

I've been putting some thought into a possible starting R scale, based on Coco's response so far. What do you think about trying something like the scale below? It's just meant to be a starting point so it might have to be tweaked as you go along. I'm looking at the cycles where you have given two smaller doses of R, and given it earlier in the cycle, and to me they look less bouncy than the cycles with one larger dose of R.

After nadir, when you first catch a rise:
250-300 – 1u
300-350 – 1.5u
350+ - 2u

AND

If +10 is higher than +9
250-300 – 0.5u
300-350 – 0.75u
350+ - 1u

For overnight, rather than getting up at +7 and +10, maybe give a little dose at bedtime if he's high enough. You wouldn't want to give R before bedtime if he is still dropping so you probably won't be able to do it every night.

What do you think?

Re: 6/13 ~ Coco ~ Acro

Maybe a little FortiFlora for the soft stools. I don't know. This will help bump up your condo, anyway.
How long since he's had bloodwork done? My cat lost a lot of weight when first diagnosed, but then slowly gained most of it back. I hope Coco starts to gain his weight back again real soon.

Re: 6/13 ~ Coco ~ Acro

Hi guys .. I don't know an answer to your weight loss question either .. mocha also lost in the beginning but is now back up to her old weight .. I hope you can get it figured out soon .. have a great day guys!

Re: 6/13 ~ Coco ~ Acro

that's a lot of food. how much does he weigh, or how much do you want him to weigh? is he active?

i'm just thinking that punkin is pretty inactive, weighs 14.3 lbs and eats 10.5 oz + a little clean-up of anya's dishes every day. so 20 oz is nearly twice that . . . and unless coco is really active and really huge, that just seems like a ton.

also, acro cats usually gain weight, not lose it, so that seems extra odd. is there a possibility of any other illness, do you think?

i think really smelly poo is related to poor digestion, ie, the pudding poo. fortiflora restores the bacteria balance in their gut, so that might help it. it's a probiotic you get from your vet or can order online. i've used it every time punkin's had antibiotics that have given him diarrhea. other than that, people give their cats natural yogurt for the bacteria, pumpkin or miralax for the fiber.

btw, are you using alarms on your cell phone? i have about 10 on mine and just leave them off unless i want a particular one.

He was on clindamycin for a month for a clinical toxoplasmosis infection.. it made him have horrible diarrhea. Im going to look into Fortiflora. I assume its safe for FIV cats? My cell phone is a lil on the slow side.. it only rings like half the time and stuff lol..

I dont think there is anything else wrong with him.. its not like rapid weight loss, its gradual.. really slow.. I would say he is around 9 to 10lb now.. from 17.. but the 17 was pre diabetes.. I would say maybe 2 lb's lost in the last 3 months tho. was about 12, now he is around 10 lb.

he isnt huge or active, and i can compare his feces to a large dogs O.O their huge! lol. The vet just says its part of the diabetes and keeps trying to sell w/d or something on me.. so i don't really ask him anymore

Re: 6/13 ~ Coco ~ Acro

Good morning Andrea

Good luck on your finals and so glad to hear that Coco is getting some good numbers too! HOpe you get YOUR good numbers with your finals! :-D

The fortiflora should be great with the FIV too! You could also try a little yogurt - not flavored the plain fat yogurt with the live culture in it. Some kitties love it - some maybe not. Clindamycin is NOTORIOUS for causing horrible diarrhea and upsetting the regular normal bacteria in the gut. So the fortiflora and/or the yogurt would replace that.

Have you tried any other foods - please forgive me if you've already answered this - what about some boiled chicken adding into the diet for more protein or even adding in some meat based baby food for a little extra calories - something somewhat bland until the diarrhea is under control and some probiotics are in him. As Julie said - with the acro - it's usually wt gain we see in these cats altho with Coco having FIV too - that does throw in an additional factor.

I hope this helps a little.

Give Coco a hug - and hoping to hear an update soon!

Re: 6/13 ~ Coco ~ Acro

punkin was on clindamycin for a post-dental mouth infection - ended up being a total of maybe 40ish days - and we were able to control the diarrhea almost completely with using the fortiflora. we gave him 1/2 packet on his food morning and evening every single day. cats mostly seem to love it - let's don't ask what's in it - and it seems to regulate the AB effect really well. that would be an easy enough thing to try, at least.

as long as his bowels are upset it might be harder to keep him from losing weight. i guess if he were mine, i'd try to address that issue first and see if it stopped the weight loss. when they're having diarrhea it means it's going through them too fast and they're not absorbing the nutrients or the calories on the way, at least not as well as they should be.

if he got his intestinal flora upset when he was on the clindamycin before, it may just not be re-established correctly yet.

Re: 6/13 ~ Coco ~ Acro

One of the websites for a distributor of raw food talks about how cats who eat a poor quality diet have smelly poo. (You never thought you'd be having this discussion or find people who would talk about this, did you?) It may be a result of the FF. See if the Friskies is any better. Gabby's poo was almost odorless on a raw diet. She does pretty well with Wellness, too. When she ate FF, let's just say is was the wrong kind of aromatherapy.

I've only found FortiFlora on-line, either through Amazon or PetFood Direct. (The vet's prices are way high for the stuff.) Natalia posted this link for a discount coupon.

I unfortunately cant do raw food because Coco has FIV. I really need to find a canned food that isn't so horrible for him. I can hear his GI system working away constantly from like 5 feet away.. Thanks for that link though, going to get some of that stuff for sure.

I know before i swapped to FF he was on friskies special diet.. and his feces did not smell.. so hopefully it'll resolve.. I only swapped him to FF to atte,pt to get him to gain weight (major fail) so may as well rid of it.

I have been giving him lots of real fully cooked chicken daily to attempt to get him to gain a lil weight .. no luck with it so far. I tried steaks also .. (he eats better then me ._.) Is the yogurt sugar free? I dont eat yogurt so i have 0 idea lol.

Yeah, Im def. going to get some fortiflora. I hear his upset GI tract all day long.. for months now.. i hope this is the reason. I thought that they naturally regain there own lil bacteria things.. but maybe he didnt for some reason? the Clindamycin was used from feb 4 til march 4 .

Sorry I'm soooo late Andrea but yes - plain, yogurt has no sugar - it would be ok - you give only about 1 tbsp. My Merlin would like it. It might help with some calories too. Just a thought.
