Good Morning LL! It's raining outside, but my house is full of sunshine now that Chyna is home again :-D :-D :-D I actually picked her up from the vet yesterday evening but by the time we got settled and both of us fed and had some cuddles I was sooooo exhausted that we both just hit the hay, sorry I didn't update last night. The minute she was handed to me in the carrier and we got in the car she stopped growling. I got some face rubs against my fingers. When we got home she stopped for petting then went straight to her food dish that I had ready and ate a few bites, she hadn't eaten much if anything at the vet. Then paced, went to the litter box, up on the bed, followed me to the kitchen, went and ate again...very interested in staying close:) Yesterday and the day before condo is here: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=97334

I finally had a consult with the vet I had wanted to see that owns the clinic, and I really like him. He was so excited about all my charts, the remission, and what I've been doing for her. I had brought in a sheet of what she gets every day with the timing of her meals, what was in the Jarrow Bright, etc and he was very interested in slippery elm bark helping her nausea and the vitamins so he could recommend it to his other patients with CKD cats! He was like "can I keep this sheet"? I made it for him, so yes:) So kudos to everyone on this board, as it has been based on your amazing advice and help:) He said something about how not many people would go so far as I have (I said I knew some from here, lol) but at least he can recommend it for the people who want to.

As for Chyna, all her levels after the (32 hour) IV were back in normal range, even the phosphorus?!...except the glucose spiked a bit over normal from all the stress, which didn't surprise me! He kept reassuring me that was just stress, that is wasn't a concern and she was very upset at the blood draw. Which everyone in the building could hear from her yowling and growling, kitty has a good set of lungs ;-) So this morning we started Epakitin for the phosphorus binder (I asked about aluminum hydroxide but he likes this one better as it worked on his kitties so wanted me to try one without aluminum for now) and Azodyl for kidney support. She ate both of them (Azodyl in a pill pocket and Epakitin in the food). I'm going to have to check into some online pricing, as those were an ouchie on the already eeek bill. He doesn't want to start subqs yet, he wants to try the Azodyl for a bit and said subqs are the next step to take after this and to bring her in if she acts unusual. So I will keep a close eye on how she feels as usual :-D

Question...should I be dividing up the amount and giving the binder in each mini meal? They have it 1 scoop twice daily on the bottle...but most cats eat less meals, I give her 9 (1/8 can) over 24 hours. 2 with slippery elm bark which is separated by hours from the others so it doesn't prevent absorption of vitamins/supplements and 1 with cosequin. I should have asked when I was there...too relieved to think I guess and I had so much to ask. I can always call to ask them. I put the Azodyl capsule in the pill pocket with the Vitamin B powder and Methylcobalamin that she gets twice daily...

I haven't had time to update her lab numbers yet from after the IV but will do so today. Sorry for the long post, haha. A big big hug and giant amount of thanks for all the support from you all! :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 6/13 Chyna update-home from vet:) Thanks!

I don't have answers for your questions, but just wanted to say how happy I am that Chyna is home. What a wonderful report, about her and your new vetty!

Re: 6/13 Chyna update-home from vet:) Thanks!

I'm glad she made such progress. See what IV fluids "can" do? Glad your vet is open to what you've brought him.

Two things...epakitin is old school. The gold standard is the aluminum hydroxide. Epakitin is supposed to only be used for six months and it can increase calcium levels which you do not want. It takes a long time for the aluminum hydroxide to cause aluminum toxicity....a very long time at a high dose. Since her phosphorous level is back down, it's probably not as much of a concern but if phosphorus x total calcium is greater than 70, you absolutely should be using aluminum hydroxide. Also, aluminum hydroxide is cheaper: $17 vs $25 for 60 grams.

Yes...with binders you want to mix it into each helping of their food. I take out Gus's daily portion of binder and sprinkle some on each helping he gets. He eats about every two hours.

On the Azodyl...I've used it and never saw any change or decrease in azotemia. Interestingly the company that makes epakitin, is the same company that introduced Azodyl to the US and Canada. Perhaps it will work for Chyna. I just felt that with the "iffy" results reported in the CRF group and my experience with it, it was one more thing to make them take that was a long shot in helping. I tried it, didn't see any results, and discontinued it when they started needing more important supplements or meds. I'd give it time, though....you will not likely see immediate results.

I hope this helps :-D I'm so glad she is better.

Re: 6/13 Chyna update-home from vet:) Thanks!

Thanks Amy and Marje, I am so happy to have her home:) She decided to climb into a cuboard this morning too instead of just opening it so she must feel ok. I hope I'm doing the right thing...I really do not think well on my feet and he was so sure to try these that they would help, he explained a whole bunch of things about the levels and stuff. Too bad whenever I go to the vet I'm so stressed and usually not sleeping the night(s) before my brain is fuzzy. I wish I could bring Marje with me to the vet  . What does "used for six moron" mean? Maybe once this bottle is gone I can switch to the aluminum one? Do you need a prescription? I really do need to figure out how to use the Tanyas group/yahoo support group thing....I wish it was set up like this site, less confusion since I already know how to use this one, haha. I'm smart, I should be able to get it :o

I've posted her new labs now too. Wish they would all stay at those levels, except the glucose of course  I'm not sure what to do with the phosphorus binder in the catsicles I make for the auto feeder, should I just sprinkle it on top of the ice cubes or maybe put it under the ice cubes? I'm on "staycation" this week so other than the two middle of the night ones it won't be a problem yet.

I think breakfast is in order:) Thanks again:)

Re: 6/13 Chyna update-home from vet:) Thanks!

So glad to see all the improvements and a path forward.

Good that Chyna is back home. Home is where the cat is! :-D cat_pet_icon

Re: 6/13 Chyna update-home from vet:) Thanks!

I'm so glad Chyna is home~very sad when our little ones have to stay at the vet. Thank you for the visit and sharing about how Chyna, like Gobbles, can't figure out why they aren't getting all the testing....!!! Have a great evening

Re: 6/13 Chyna update-home from vet:) Thanks!

Glad to hear Chyna is home now and happy to be with her Mama. Sounds like a good consult with the Vet and nice he is open to everything you're doing for Chyna and is impressed. Hope you both have a good night and rest.

Re: 6/13 Chyna update-home from vet:) Thanks!

I'm so glad you got your girl back home where she belongs.
Good luck to you, with the meds. J.D. takes Azodyl.

Thanks for all the visits and concern, you are all so special and I appreciate the support so much. You are right Rhiannon, HOME is where the CAT is!!! I also saw a poster once that home is where the cat hair sticks to everything but the cat  My staycation week is almost over and I'm so glad she is home for some quality time before I go back to work!

I've had my (retired carpenter) dad working on a project for me, today he finished building it and I went to get carpet and stapled it on...Chynas new ramp :-D Her stairs were only half the height of the bed and I was worried when the CKD progresses she may have trouble jumping even though it's ok now. But prices of these in stores or online are insane! The wood was stuff dad had laying around and the carpet superstore gave me the free 12 ft by 1.5 ft of carpet, so it was a free ramp except some work! He said they keep them around for when people ask for carpet for cats scratching posts, which really impressed me. It doesn't match my bedroom, but I don't care. I'll be buying carpet or lino there next time I need it, which I guess is the reason they do that ;-) So it's all set up now and it was used as soon as it was in place, Chyna was not shy:) I moved the bed a bit so you can see but couldn't get Chyna to stay on it long enough to take a picture, lol. (Edit: to prove me wrong AGAIN she just went and sat on the ramp  ) Pics here:

I'm so glad Chyna is back home with you and she's doing so much better! :-D :-D

Love the ramp. Great tip to try the carpet places for those remnants.
