6/12 Alexia's Blue-Change Prozinc to Lantus-Advice needed

As some may have heard, I'm having company on Wednesday for a couple weeks - his name is Blue and he belongs to newbie Alexia.

She currently has Blue on 1 unit Prozinc, just started home testing and her ss is below in my signature. I've been talking with her about switching to Lantus and was hoping some of you more experienced users could help articulate the positives of changing now - so early in the process.

I suggested she come here, read the stickies, look around and decide for herself. She said she would look tonight. If she goes for it, I'm not sure whether to start on .5 or 1. I know a lot will depend on his Bg's the next few days. Any thoughts on starting dose will be helpful for me.

I will keep his ss up to date and I'll do my best to post daily condos for Blue.

Oh and well, it's very possible that Maui may want to sneak a word or two in, now that we will sublet for a couple weeks!

The positives:

  • One huge positive is Lantus' track record of remission -- not just on this board but in the veterinary literature, as well, and especially in newly diagnosed cats.
  • It's more gentle than other insulin and is longer acting.
  • There is less of a chance of hypo -- it can happen but it is more likely with other insulin (excepting Levemir).
  • There's all of us in Lantus Land for support and information.

really can't comment on a starting dose of lantus yet. if a switch is made, we'll have to take a look to see what kind of response blue has been getting from the 1u of prozinc...

Hey! I am Alexia, Blue's mamma! So I see that it is completely safe to switch from ProZinc to Lantus? The higher remission rate, now I am into that!

Here is my question, I work in management at a retail job. 90% of the time my hours are 2:30pm-10:30pm (factoring in the hour train ride there and back) or 8am-4pm. The 8 to 4 are the ideal shift because I can be here for both shots. Now it is the 2:30-10:30 that throws everything off. If he was getting his shot at 6:30am then I wouldn't be home until +17.5. Is this insulin more flexible than ProZinc? My roommate WAS on board with helping me in all this, but now that home testing is involved he has backed away from that, so unfortunately I am flying solo until my fiance gets back from hiking the AT in the fall.

The other thing is that since ProZinc is so new, the lack of information that I get from other users isn't always the most helpful.

I am open to learn as much as I can about Lantus. And any information you can give me is appreciated. Especially if anyone has any testimonials about their experience with it. I know Hillary is a huge fan and her success story is great! The listen to authority programming in my head is nervous since my vet gave me ProZinc, but if I have learned anything from this board it is that not all vets know a lot about diabetes. Hearing from you is what I need. Has anyone else made the switch from ProZinc to Lantus?

Welcome to Lantus Land!

Yes, it's fine to switch to Lantus, I had the same concerns when switching from Caninsulin to Lantus, took me a while to sink in - but I'm glad I did!

I'm wondering if Hillary could add it to the main subject line - ProZinc to Lantus switching, somethig like that to get you some former users to chime in!
I know there's a few here.

Tough schedule, hope u can find some solutions - check back often or thru Hillary, she's doing a great job!

Hi Alexia
Welcome to Lantus. It is so great that Hilary will be taking care of Blue while you are away.
I do not know anything anout Prozinc. We were on Caninsulin (vetsuln) for 2 weeks before switching to Lantus.
For the many reasons that have already been mentioned and a huge one was the support
of this board.
Now we did not have any schedule issues at all in sooting a 12/12 schedule but I would hop that something could be worked out for you.
Max has been off insulin since Aprl 3/10, thanks to being here!!!!
Have an amazing trip and we will be we watching Blue.
Can't wait for the pic.

Actually it was suggested to me thru Lantus Land, via Jojo and all our supportive team!

My vet knew of Lantus but I was too scared, stressed to switch right away.
As you can see Caninsulin (our SS) was awful for Luna.
But ECID, every cat is different, and he was one of the kitties who did well on Lantus and with the switch.

It takes a bit to get over what you learned on another insulin. But it's well worth it.

My roommate is going to try hometesting tomorrow with me and I am going to talk to my work about getting more opening shifts, so if both work out then the problem will be less often. One can only hope!

Hillary is wonderful for taking Blue in like that, I never knew that people had such kind hearts and were willing to help people they barely knew until I joined this board. I have said it before and I will say it again, I don't know where I would be without this board. I am only a week and a half in but I would probably be crying in the corner if it wasn't for people on this board and especially Hillary.

Sorry Heather - I ain't swapping cats with you! Keep asking, but I ain't swapping.

Alexia - keep asking questions and doing your research and you will decide.

One of the other things I wanted to point out - when looking at what people write to you - look under their avatar and you will see when they joined the board. Now this is a new board so some of the folks may not have changed their date to their real date, however, look at their signature to see when they were diagnosed and their ss to see when they started. All that will give you a good indication of how long someone has been at this process and what their knowledge level may be.

And Ronnie isn't telling you her whole story! She went through what is it 4 vets, I think and let's just say it wasn't pretty. It took a lot of coaxing of the people here and trust on Ronnie's part to listen to these "strangers" and take that leap of faith.

Maui is doing as well as she is today, because of the people here and what we used to call the "J" team - Jojo (a vet tech) and Jill/Alex, among several others who helped guide me through this process.

Hi Alexia, I posted this message (see below) on your other thread and am moving it here for the sake of consolidation. Lantus is definitely a good choice!

Stu was on PZI Vet for almost 4 years before switching to Lantus (when PZI Vet was discontinued). He has had wonderful results with Lantus. But I give the credit to this board for all of the progress he has made. The people here are fantastic. Good luck with the switch. Lantus takes some getting used to and needs to be given very consistently (therefore it does put a crimp in your schedule/social life), but it's worth it to see how healthy your cat looks and feels. Welcome to LL.

Does anyone have anything negative to say about Lantus?

What is the biggest difference you noticed in your cat when you made the switch? (Besides OTJ because that is HUGE!)

If I have gathered correctly ProZinc doesn't last as long as Lantus, so wouldn't my sometimes longer hours be more okay with Lantus than Prozinc?

Question regarding hometesting that I just wanted to know if any of you experienced. So whenever it comes time to home test Blue or I think about it, I get this really anxious feeling in my stomach. I do calm down before I do it-I don't want to get him anxious. It is almost like I feel horrible. I know that what I am doing is the best thing for him but it is almost like it is hard on me having to draw blood! I am afraid I am being too rough but when I try to barely prick him we don't get any blood. It seems to be hard on me. It reminds me of that old saying that used to make you angry as a kid when a parent would say, "this is harder on me than it is on you." I will do what I have to to get my little one healthy but at the same time it is a drag on my spirits that I have to do that. Has anyone else experienced that? Please tell me it passes. He hasn't acted mad at me but I am still afraid he might get upset with me. Are these newbie feelings?

I really, really can't stand the sight (or thought) of blood, but I knew this was what I had to do for Lucy. One of the things I did that helped was to make up a stupid song (the Pokey Song) that I would sing while I was poking. It was silly and distracted me a little bit from what I was doing. It doesn't hurt that Lucy learned to love pokey time, or at least she loved the treats that came after pokey time. ;-)

Here's the spreadsheet of a cat who switched from ProZinc to Lantus. You can see what a difference it made to him. Unfortunately Connor had multiple other health issues that took him from us too soon, but as you can see his diabetes was well controlled with Lantus:

Ah - I have no fear of poking! So, he's in for some poking fun with me!

Caryl and I were talking yesterday and discovered that we poke differently - I poke from front to back (inside edge of ear) and she pokes back to front (outside edge of ear).

Which makes me wonder, how does everyone else poke?

Oh and Alexia has decided to stick with prozinc for now - so if I have questions and can't get answers on PZI, ok to come to LL for help?
