Yesterday, ugly day of NDW.

Once again I was reminded why I don't like doing .25U increases for Neko. If I can stay on top of her upward numbers drift with smaller increases, she doesn't see such bad NDW. Paws crossed it's now in the rear view mirror. Upon reading more on Azodyl, there is also a potential for it to raise the blood sugars. Great timing starting it as I increased.

Neko came into the bedroom 5 minutes before the alarm, meowing loudly. I thought she wanted food. Well, she probably did, but first up was drop, flop and roll with belly exposed for cuddles. So nice to get the purrs first thing in the morning. :joyful::joyful: Last night and this morning I served NV raw chicken. It was hit with Neko (what isn't?) and even Theo seemed to go for it, except when I was rushing out the door to a meeting after PMPS last night. Darn cats, worst time to be fussy. It was acceptable fuds this morning.

It's ho hum, another day of sun here. Neko's out in the solarium taking in the breezes through the screens. The bean is thinking of heading out to the raw food specialist store (most knowledgeable) in a bit, and get their take on low phos raw options.

Happy Fursday everyone! I hope the hairballs at your place aren't as bad as mine. I thought Theo had given me a day off from hairballs, but I found it on the corner of the stairs.

We haven't tried the Azodyl yet, as Tess seems to be holding steady on the CKD front. I was reading that the mfg. no longer requires cold shipping.

I had to read back through your posts to see if you found the TCfeline Special Formula. Bummer that they didn't have it. John's nephew lives in Vancouver and I was thinking of having him get some for us to try. I wish the US branch would get off it's duff and the the low phos version in production. It sounds like you have some good options for raw up there.

I's hanging on the shore wit you.... but we shud head down soon.... k?

would like to know what you find out....I hadn't realized I couldn't order the tcfeline.... I may have to request someone to grab me some....

Egads, Neko. You really do NDW proud. Glad that's yesterday's news. Now for today, safe, steady.

Love her morning demands!

Pretty blues for Miss Neko, but I know mamabean is looking for Mr. :D's! I just love how she wants those belly rubs! I was just saying I would not dare rub Tiger's belly, I value my hands and arms too much, especially after her ultrasound!

Bummer on the Azodyl. Did you see this thread by chance? Did the company respond to your inquiry? What I do recall reading in Plumb is if it has to do with plain psyllium husk, that shouldn't raise bg, but it can cause impaction in a dehydrated cat.

I'm back from fuds investigation, and to a MUCH better number.

Ann, Rhiannon, Marilyn, Carla, Ruth - Looks like there are a few extra options for me. One of the local manufacturers, IrRAWsistible has updated their line. The website is incorrect though. But in the store, the product available has taken out the veggies (now lower carb) and the beef product is done with eggshell calcium. I'll email and see if they have anything more up to date on their analysis - they didn't 3 years ago. There are also a lot of suppliers of just ground meat (muscle meat, heart and liver) that could be used with TC Feline. Options include chicken, turkey, beef, venison, elk, goat.
@rhiannon and shadow - you can get the TC Feline premix online there, just not the special version which is low phosphorus. Looks like it's only available on line here too, unless we go on vacation to Saltspring Island.
@Tiger and Ruth - Yes, I saw the thread - it walked me away from the ledge last night. Still waiting for a response. I don't think she's dehydrated. I think it was her poop in the box this morning. It was covered, and that only happens around here if Theo covers for her. :cat:

Liver has at least one and a half times as much phosphorus as just muscle meat so if you are getting a food with liver mixed in it, it might be an idea to find how much they are using. I cut back a lot on the liver after I found Sheba needed low phosphorus. I only give about 6 grams every second day now. She loves it but I only give her enough so she gets some Vit A and D.
With the heart, I also cut back to one or two chicken hearts a day. http://feline-nutrition.org/nutrition/how-much-heart-is-too-much is some interesting info on hearts. The main reason I cut back was I was trying to keep the sodium level down.
The IrRAWsistable looks good with the eggshell calcium. I have read that eggshell powder is a binder for phosphorus.
Not sure how true this is, so would be interested what others have read.
Have you thought of adding cooked egg white to the meal in place of some of the meat. That lowers the phosphorus further. I have read that if eggshell powder is used instead of bonemeal, and egg white is used in place of some of the meat these together lowers the meal to down near 0.7% phosphorus DM
ETA I just tried the link and it would not work for me. You could google.... how much heart is too much feline nutrition.org

I'll take a solid blue any day over what she's done lately.
@Bron - here is the link. The TC Feline Special recipe includes some raw egg yolk but not the white. There is a second recipe that is protein reduced, and it uses some veggies and butter. There are also products that are plain meat. The biggest issue is that some of them were created for dogs, so come in really big frozen packages.

The TFCfeline Recipe link was interesting.
Recipe B would be high carb wouldn't it with all that pumpkin?

We can't get the TFC feline supplements out here except by importing from O/S and it is expensive. I am not sure why they put in the egg yoke in the recipes unless it is for the vitamins A and D because it has almost all the phosphorus in it. Sheba eats 120 grams of food twice a day so Recipe A would last her a bit over 4 days and that would be 2 egg yokes in 4 days.

The egg white has almost no phosphorus but lots of protein. It says in the article that calcium carbonate acts as a phosphorus blocker which is what egg shell powder is.

The ingredients of the TFC supplements is almost the same as I make up myself. I was unable to get a suitable supplement to add to the food so had no real choice other than to make my own.
I put in Vit B complex, B12, Vit E, salmon oil, taurine, egg shell powder, and she gets the Vit A and D from the Liver and egg yoke I use..(only small amounts.) I make up a jar of it and put in 5mls twice a day into her meals. It is easy to do and much cheaper than any supplements that are already 'ready made'....not that I had much choice anyway....Her meals are muscle meat, little bit of heart and liver, one egg white cooked and mashed up a day and about one egg yoke a week given little bits each day plus about I teaspoon pumpkin a day.
I don't know if this is the perfect diet for kidney disease but it was the best I could come up with after much research and she seems to be doing well on it.

OMG, @Bron and Sheba! That sounds like a lot of work.

Wendy, I hope you are able to get everything Neko needs, ready-made without having to mortgage the solarium to pay for it!

Looks like Neko spent the day with the blues group. Cinco was there, too. I guess it's better than being flat yellow!

@Tricia & Cinco
It's not really a lot of work. I make up the supplements bottle every 10 days and just add it to the food every day. Takes 10 seconds. And making up the bottle takes 5 - 10 minutes max every 10 days. The hardest part was sourcing the vitamins etc as I had no one to ask at the time...it was quite a while pre my joining FDMB.
I cook the eggs every 4 or 5 days and do it while doing something else. I could make up a couple of weeks food at once if I wanted to and freeze but I prefer to cut up the meat and add the egg white each night for the evening meal and the next morning meal. Doesn't take long. And it always looks so fresh and Sheba just loves it. Definitely worth the effort;):)
