Yesterday, mostly blue but a quick check of the yellow/green floors. World Cup starts soon, I think Neko might be a fan of Brazil by sporting their colours.

6/9 Recap:
AMPS 83  +3 218 +9 103 +11 101
PMPS 107 +4 128 +8 84

Today is vetty day for Neko, appointment is later this afternoon. She is due to get her heart murmur checked and I'll get b/w done too and ask about pain meds and alternatives (maybe acupuncture?). I spend some time yesterday getting video of Neko walking, but she was looking pretty spry as I was shaking a treat bag to get her to walk towards me. I don't think she's in a lot of pain, but she's not as mobile as last year and I haven't seen her do much in the way of jumping for a while. Stair height seems to be the max she is interested in right now. She still purrs and has her happy moments, rolling on her back for tummy rubs, and looking for cuddles. Right now she is curled up in the solarium bed, tummy exposed.

SSSSSSCORRRRRRRE!

That's my World Cup touch. Brazil is fine, but Finland, now there is a football powerhouse with a national flag color that I can get behind. Or Greece. SSSSCCCCORRRRRE Greece!

I hope you both are well. Keep on keeping on, eh!

Cheerio!

Hi Wendy,
I hope everything went well at the vet.
And I hope that the vet gave you some good suggestion for pain management.

Re: 6/10 Neko AMPS 112 +6.5 225 +9 159 Back from vet

Neko was back to basic blue for the vetty. Appointment was at +9.5. Better BG than she's been the last couple of blood tests. Naturally Neko used the LB just before she went in the carrier, so no urine testing. At least I was able to test for ketones. We did talk about her mouth pawing - everything looks OK in there. Heart murmur is still about the same level and same place so don't need to do anything about that at this point. Neko's organs were tight, not sure if that was stress or acro so she had a harder time checking them. Neko has gotten fluffier since the last visit - I knew that. Sigh! Time to trim the portion sizes a bit more.

Pain management was the big topic today. I had taken some videos yesterday (thanks to Liz for the idea!) and she could see what I was talking about. She checked the spine and there are a couple of sensitive spots mid/lower back. We are going to do a low dose gabapentin trial to see if it makes any difference. Vetty had just been at a conference where gabe was talked about. Apparently there aren't any cat related trials with it, it's just being tried based on human results. My vet had gone to one talk where the speaker was questioning gaba and another vet at the clinic went to another talk where someone raved about it. But she's willing to try something to see if it works. We did talk about acupuncture, no surprise that she wasn't a fan and didn't know who did it in town, other than the one person in North Vancouver I already knew about. After the gaba trial I may pursue that on my own.

Theo is busy trying to help get the vetty smell off - Neko's doesn't like him well enough for that. We may need KTSS help here!

@Rebekah, Mariko - Thanks for visiting. Neko's a fan of Sweden so far today. Vet was pleased at the difference bupe is making but we'll see if gabapentin can do it one better.

Re: 6/10 Neko AMPS 112 +6.5 225 +9 159 Back from vet

Hi Wendy - Sounds like a good vetty report overall, Neko seems to be doing ok. I have no input on the gabapentin trial, can't help there at all. I hope it will help Neko. I do know a few folks that have gone the acupuncture route with great results. Maybe worth a try if the other doesn't help. My BJ used to paw at her mouth, we never found ay thing either. I wish you luck with the pain management.

Have a great evening. We finally have sun tonight.

Re: 6/10 Neko AMPS 112 PMPS 128 Back from vet

Well, it's nice to see Neko did not have vet stress anyway; and Tiger usually likes to pee all over the vet and the vet's table when she's there... I wonder if any of the vets are into accupuncture these days? There is one vet in Lynnwood that does it on dogs that I know of, but not sure if she works on cats. I hope you get good results from the new med though.

Re: 6/10 Neko AMPS 112 PMPS 128 Back from vet

Hey, Wendy. Sounds like a good visit overall. What do you think is causing the pain?

Re: 6/10 Neko AMPS 112 PMPS 128 Back from vet

Hi Wendy, it looks like Neko's apt went pretty well. Glad the murmur is stable. Her bg doesn't seem affected. Does she get nervous at the vet?

First gabapentin pill went down the hatch with no problems, thanks to pill pockets. That's actually the first time I've ever had to pill Neko. Vetty suggested compounding, which we might do if this becomes long term, but Neko's never had a problem with something that resembles food.

@Michelle - Zener just started gabapentin last week and a I know a number of the acros are on it, and Julie tried it with Punkin so there is some experience around here. I'll definitely give acupuncture a go if I can find someone not too far away. I can see sun in the distance, but not here on the mountain yet.

@Ruth - Neko doesn't seem to show vet stress in her BG, although the tight organs might have been a sign of it. Acupuncture vets for dogs is definitely more common.

@Elise - Acrocats commonly get arthritis, specifically a type of spinal stenosis. The beginning of this year Neko stopped jumping up on things and was more reserved. She went on daily bupe which really helped her seem better, playing/interacting more, but she's still favoring her back end when she walks. Vetty checked her spine and found some sensitive spots.

@Catherine - I was definitely happy to hear the murmur hadn't changed. Cardiomyopathy is one of the most common issues with acrocats. Neko does get a bit nervous - she wanted back in her kennel, but she's not to bad there.

Hi Wendy:

I'm late to the party, as usual. Just wanted to say I'm glad the vet visit went well and Neko suffered no setback from the trauma of it all! Sounds like she took it in stride. I hope the gaba works and she feels better.

It's funny, I have to fight like heck to get my kitties into the kennels when we go to the vet, and then I can't get them out once we're there. They spend the whole visit trying to get back in them, then when we're in the car they want out again! Make up your mind, you little furry knotheads!
