? 6/1 Trixie AMBG 81 - ondansetron Q

Unfortunately today's condo isn't as happy as yesterday's/previous days...totally random and out of the blue, Trix threw up twice last night. DH and I were both snoozing on the couch, and she was on the back of the couch behind DH. From what we could tell, she just jumped down and barfed, but since we were both asleep, we're not sure if something "provoked" the barf, or if it was just something that was going to happen no matter what. It was about 2 hours after she had last eaten and 2 hours after her evening meds (pepcid and benazepril). Plus she had had cerenia in the morning, so I couldn't give her anything (I don't have SEB in the house). Although this is not the first time this has happened, she's usually not a random barfer (when she does barf, she usually just occasionally does the empty tummy tummy acid spit up thing before breffis), so things like this rattle every nerve in my body - especially since she had the cerenia in the morning. And, of course, I am now in hyper helicopter mode. I stayed up virtually all night, just lightly dozing and waking up a few times to offer her tiny snacks.

She does seem OK, although I don't think she's 100%. Her appy hasn't been bad, and she was pretty bright-eyed and spunky during the night and earlier this morning. Right now she's snoozing in a cubby basket, probably to get away from me. I don't like when she's in that basket because I can't get a good look at her eyes to see how she's feeling.

So I'm pretty stressed and edgy, especially with my Dad's chemo starting again tomorrow on top of everything else. It will be a different protocol, so it's all a big stressful unknown right now....

Healing vines for Trixie. Hate those pukies. I hope it was a one time thing. What a way to wake up though. Of course you are helicoptering. I would be too. Hope you have a great day off and get some rest too!

What a glorious BG for Trixie! I am sorry about the barf... I hope i was just one of otiose things, and back to normal today. It is so ha rd to know the why of it all. I am glad that she seems ok this morning. Be well Miss Trixie!

Trix had 4mg cerenia this morning. She does seem a bit nauseous to me, though. It's OK if I give her ondansetron along with her pepcid this evening, correct? I haven't used Onda in a while...

@Anne & Zener (GA) - did you do them all at the same time? Tonight she wouldn't get cerenia, but she would probably get it in the morning. My vetty isn't in anyway, but they really don't use Onda there - she prescribed it for me at my request, though, but I don't think anyone else in the office would be well-versed.

Trix did ask for her first dinner...little bit of a Mannie Fuds dance and she did OK for her first round, but she definitely is a bit off. Her pills aren't due for another hour and a half-ish, so I have time to decide about the onda.....plus I need to see if my parents still have it. I gave it to them when my Dad started chemo, but he does have his own script and I think his is stronger so he probably wouldn't have taken Trix's.

Hopefully Trixie is feeling better by now, and hopefully everything will go smoothly tomorrow with your dad's chemo.
 
We did Cerenia in the middle of the day, then cypro, ondansetron and Zantac before food AM and PM. There wasn't much delay between meds and food. I guess we were more concerned about eating when the insulin started kicking in.

@Anne & Zener (GA) - One more question...what was the dose - 2mg? The bottle I have was prescribed by a different vet than ours, and it has a 4mg dosage, but if I remember correctly, I think my personal vet said 2mg.

I'm not sure if I need it or not, but I want to be prepared. In many ways, she seems fine, but you know how a bean can sense things, and I'm really thrown for a loop because she did throw up last night despite having cerenia in the morning....

Just did a little poking around about side effects and I see it can lower BP...that makes me a bit nervous since she is on BP meds. I don't think I will use it without talking to my vetty first, and she's not in until Wednesday. I'm just stressing myself out....

I think it might have been 1 mg BID. Anne cut up the pills and she isn't here right now but I am remembering 1/4 of a tablet.

yes.... 1/4 of a 1 mg tablet.
I have cerenia to use as needed and ondansetron to use bid as needed.
I usually try to space any meds with at least 30 minutes in between.... mostly because that's how long it generally takes to dissolve and get in their
system.
my vet has me okay with giving both.
 
We have 4mg tablets, so the dose is 1/12 to 1/16 , in other words just a crumb. It's so tiny it just dissolves right on her tongue and she doesn't have a chance to spit it out.;)
 
Thanks for all the replies, guys! I'm holding off for now, but watching closely. She's diving in to her fuds, but then stopping herself after a few bites...a weird mix, but I suppose it could mean she's nauseated. Usually when she doesn't feel well she licks her food gingerly and just skims the surface rather than diving in like this. So she IS eating, but I don't think it's enough. Hopefully this is just a little blip...she HAS done this before, but it never stops being nerve-rattling...
 
Whatever is going on with Trix, I hope it works itself out--sending tons of appy vines, gentle scritches and prayers for your dad and your raw nerves to be soothed!

I totally understand why this has unnerved you.

For future reference, we normally give 2mg of Ondansetron, up to twice a day. Minka's vet said I could give the whole 4 mg at once if I felt she needed it. I often give Cerenia, Pepcid and Ondansetron in the same day, but I space the Cerenia and Ond at least an hour or more apart.

Minka sometimes eats that way, too, when she's starting to feel better but still not 100%.
