Happy Birthday, Kasha!!!! 18 years old!!!!

And look how she's started the celebration! She spent last night in high numbers, but that +8 check made me hope she was clearing the bounce already - and just look at her go!
:RAHCAT

She had a good appetite this morning, so I suspected (I let her eat a little before I shoot). But then the meter was counting down and I was just daring to hope a little - and then we saw it. 245. Nothing to sneeze at there!

She ate a little over 2 Tbsp for breakfast. She'd eat more, but I'm going to spread out the meals a little this morning. Might go into work a little late (again).

Last night she woke me up (I fell asleep on the couch again) because she was hungry. I got up and was cleaning some stuff up first and she went back to one of her beds. Then I peeked out around the corner and she saw me. I hid. I peeked out again and I saw her running over to sneak up on me! Just like we used to do - she hasn't done that in years, she doesn't run/trot much and she hasn't been too interested in playing. I thought she was just getting older... But it was probably because she wasn't feeling quite right.

I should have learned 3+ yrs ago when she went hyperthyroid. I'd thought she was just getting older and that diet was finally working. Till I took her off the diet and she still lost weight. After we "fixed" that problem, she once again became a terror in the vet's office (and at home) and I realized that she wasn't mellowing with age - she was just not feeling well.

Sometimes us beans aren't so smart... LOL.

Happy Birthday, my Kasha-bean, my little girl, my sweet-tart! You're the best! party_cat

Kasha - have a great birthday! Give your mamabean some more reasons to celebrate - like blue or green ones.

I'm not sure what Kasha's dinner is going to be. I'm considering cooking up some organic ground beef since we don't eat beef and she might think of it as a treat... Or I could get take-out (LOL) chicken or turkey and she can have that. Ground beef and turkey layer cake?

As for me - I already had some real cake (hey - it was leftover from yesterday!)... It's Kasha's birthday - we've gotta have cake!

Happy Birthday Kasha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a big day! 18yrs old?!?!?!
I didnt realize you and Latte were the same age (she is 18 in approximately 1-2months).
Im glad there was a little 'play' time. I can relate to how special those moments can be. They are far and few as they get older. It just warms your heart when you catch a glimpse, doesnt it.

I certainly hope you two have a great day. Doesnt this warrant an extra day off work, or something?!?!!?

Yeah - I'm not feeling that great for some reason, so I already called off work. Kind of convenient, huh? Probably has nothing to do with my junk food weekend and waking up at 3:15 am to my neighbors blasting music... but I'm happy to stay home with my girl (and my boy, Blue, who's sleeping on the couch w/me).

That sounds good to me for Kasha's B-day and cake for you. Yes, you have to finish that cake as it may get stale, lol! Do you have an In'n'Out burger restaurant there in your area? It may only be on the west coast and is mostly take out, drive thru, also inside seating. Anyway, they use fresh ground beef and peel their own potatoes there in the restaurant.

You two have a wonderful day and birthday celebration.

Re: 6/1 Happy Birthday, Kasha! AMPS 245 PMPS 291

What a stellar day! 291 at PMPS and that might have a bit of a food spike in it, since I tested at +11.5 and she was 220, then I fed some, then I retested before shooting. I mean, it could be the insulin wearing off, but I prefer to think it's a food spike ;-)

She did not appreciate her PM shot. I stuck her twice because she cried out and jerked away the first time and it startled me. She did it again the 2nd try - not sure why - I mean - these are the 1/2 " 29 gauge needles and I am making sure the bevel is in the correct position (since the needles are large enough for me to see the bevel!). The needle went in cleanly too. Hmmm... - she's pretty sensitive, but it didn't seem to bother her this AM. Maybe she just figures on her birthday she shouldn't have to deal with this indignity. She flinched at her SQ fluids today too - but not too much. It's like she's more sensitive today or something.

Another Baytril down - in a pill pocket. I'm presenting them as treats and it worked again. Seriously - someone else try these allergy formula (duck and green pea) pill pockets and let me know if they are magical or not. I've never had luck with the pill pockets before...

Check out Kasha's new avatar...

Time for a walk...

Happy birthday Kasha!!!
What a nice blue day she had! Very nice!!!

I hope you have some LC cake to celebrate tonight! The ones offered in this condo looked yummy!

Krys... one last note, and perhaps you know that already... try to pick up Kasha's food 2 hours before shot time and see what you get in terms of numbers! I got very excited when Tizon started to play "hide the food" - meaning when his PS and +1 were the same...

Well, usually there is no food left around +10. I feed about 15 - 30 min before shooting, to make sure she really will eat. But on a work day, I will never be home at +10, so I can't really do that. If she really improves enough that I feel I can count on her eating, I may try the test feed/shoot or test/shoot/feed with the shooting and feeding at basically the same time, but we've had appetite problems in the past and it stresses me out too much.

yeah - it's huge but I couldn't get the 1/2" needles in a smaller gauge - least not anywhere near me... I checked with Carolyn and Latte AND Ann and Maggie11, they both said they use the 1/2" 29 gauge needles...

Hi, where do you get the duck and green pea pill pockets? I have some chicken pill pockets samples from the Vet and just started using them on Maggie. The antibiotic pill sure goes down easier, as long as I have a small amount of Gerber beef baby food to help wash it down!

I found them at Pet Supplies Plus. Pet Food Direct has them online too. The other pill pockets I had in my cupboard had corn syrup/flours/wheat gluten in them, but the allergy formula doesn't (bonus).

Greenies Pill Pockets Feline Roasted Duck and Pea Allergy Formula Cat Treats
Ingredients: Duck, glycerin, dried peas, natural flavors, vegetable oil, water, salt, potassium sorbate, xanthan gum, citric acid, preserved with mixed tocopherols.

Re: 6/1 Happy Birthday, Kasha! AMPS 245 PMPS 291, 96 @ +3

I am sooo tired.

She's 96 at +3 and not interested in food. I got her to eat some ground beef and a little FF, but then she just walked away...

Guess she felt like she had to hit her greens today too.

Happy Birthday to your lovey girl! Get that voter registration filled out. Yay, Kasha!

Re: 6/1 Happy Birthday, Kasha! AMPS 245 PMPS 291, 96 @ +3

Sigh... I gave her a little tiny bit of milk and she was all sarcastic about it, like "how'd you figure that out so quick? I heard you used to be smart..." Before her dx, I was giving her a tiny bit of milk every day to get her to take her probiotics (since her appetite wasn't good - mixing anything in her food might have made her refuse to eat). I know it's not great for cats, but she's never had any stomach issues from milk and she can't resist it, so it didn't seem to hurt her (my boys would always vomit about 1 minute after drinking milk).

I stopped giving her any milk because I thought the sugars in it might raise her BG. Anyone have experience with this?

57! I gave some LC with gravy on it. She ate a little... wandered over and had a couple of bites of ground beef too. I'll be testing again in a few minutes. We're not used to these numbers...

apparently she wants to finish her birthday bash with a bang!
I certainly hope she is not too hung over tomorrow!
Doing great Krys!!!

Did you check Hocks for syringes?

Yes - didn't see anything smaller for the 3/10 cc, 1/2" needle. I have to call Walmart again - they said something about a 30 gauge, but I would have to verify that it's 3/10 cc, 1/2" needle. Throw in the 1/2 unit markings too. So many criteria!

I had a heck of a time finding anyone who made u100, 3cc, half unit markings, long needles in anything smaller gauge than 29. Seriously.

Strangely enough I read some old post off old fdmb the other day (couldnt tell you how I got there or where it is), where someone said they dont make those needles with anything smaller than 29 gauge.

if you find it, let me know! latte deals with the bigger needles okay. But I always prefer smaller when possible

I had a feeling Kasha was going big for her birthday today - Nice greens. I know, scary when you aren't used to them. Hope you get some sleep tonight!

Regarding needle/syringe. I get mine thru HOCKS. I am very happy with the ones I am using. Monoject ultra comfort 31 gauge, short needle 5/16th inch, half unit markings , 3 cc. Are you specifically looking for a longer needle?? Why?

Also - pill pockets - just the the duck /pea ones today on your earlier rec. Tuscany sometimes take the others without fuss, sometimes you have to coat it with dust from the freeze dried chicken. She did take the duck/pea one today without any fuss - maybe an extra sniff but took it right down. I'll see how they do after this.

When people say "3 cc" - do you mean 3/10 cc?

Kasha has very long (think 4 inches or more in spots) and very thick (as in, can't really see skin except at the very base of hair and often same color as hair) fur. I was talking about my constant concerns over fur shots (see last week's "HI" reading) and how even trying to part her fur, I can't see or feel the needle go in, so I'm never sure. Carolyn (Latte) and Ann (Maggie) said they use 1/2 " needles to be sure. And it is a lot easier to know the insulin is going where it should.
