...in contrast to this more recent info (thanks to Wendy):

The somatostatin analogue octreotide has been evaluated in a few cats with acromegaly with limited success. In a study of four cats with acromegaly, no change in serum growth hormone concentration was noted after treatment with octreotide. Another study, which measured the short-term effects of octreotide in five cats with acromegaly, found a decrease in growth hormone concentrations for up to 90 minutes after octreotide administration. However, a recent study evaluating a long-acting somatostatin analogue (Sandostatin LAR Depot - Novartis) showed no benefit in cats treated for three to six months.

The failure of these drugs to inhibit growth hormone release may be related to differences in somatostatin receptor subtypes found on pituitary adenomas. Future studies to identify the somatostatin receptor subtypes in feline growth hormone-secreting pituitary tumors are required to determine if these subtypes are similar to the ones found in people and if human somatostatin analogue therapy, at least in theory, may be beneficial in cats with acromegaly.

In cats, Octreotide has been used to treat acromegaly in cats but the results were unimpressive, possibly because the correct dose has yet to be worked out.

The article the vet pointed to just says octreotide does a temporary lowering of the GH. We knew that from other more recent papers. If you read about the long term octreotide study at CSU, you can see about some of the side effects. When I was there in 2012 I asked about it and was told "the study failed". I haven't found a paper about it, but people generally don't publish about failures. If the vet wants to contact someone involved in the study, I believe Dr. Katharine Lunn, currently at NCSU was involved in it. A quick google finds her email address. I contacted her a few years ago about pasireotide studies in the US (there were none). When she was at CSU, she led a lot of the research into acrocats.

Thank you, Wendy. I've sent this info to the vet, too.

With Maxi's current tummy problems, and the lack of persuasive evidence to try it, I don't think I should go for octreotide.
