5/7 Ming AMPS = 56, +1 = 76, +4=68, +5 = 106, +7 = 194

+11.5 = 43

Still haven't fed yet. Should I? I'll test in another half hour. Poor guy is hungry but otherwise good.

Also to note, on Levemir, Ming's nadir sometimes seems to appear during shot time and onset is around +5. But there was that one odd time he dived down to 27 at +5.

The general rule of thumb is to feed the 40s. I wouldn't give Ming a full meal -- just a little food to bring numbers up. Are you able to stall this morning to see what happens with the numbers?

An FYI, it looks like the bounce broke. I'd err on the side of caution with a shot -- I'd want to be sure numbers are rising without the influence of food.

I fed him 1/4 can of LC or FF chicken.

Edit: originally typed MC but I meant LC if there's any confusion with the posts below.

How can I be sure? I fed him now so his next number could potentially be food influenced. But also, he's had a history of not being very food-influenced and I often have to give him a higher % of carbs to see any effect when he's experiencing low numbers.

Usually at the end of the cycle you would try to just feed a little low carb, a teaspoon he wasn't dropping dramatically, so really we just needed to bump him up above 40 for you to shoot.

from the handling low numbers sticky
Some general rules when stalling (ECID):
  • 50s or higher – don’t feed. The number will bump up on its own soon due to the insulin wearing off.
  • 40s or lower – you have a couple of choices.
    • When 40s occur at the end of the cycle, it can be beneficial to withhold food and test in 15-20 minutes to determine if kitty is on the rise or hasn’t reached nadir yet.
    • If they are hanging in the 40s for a while, or if they are still dropping, it is ok to feed a tsp or two of LC and retest. This is very tricky. You want to avoid feeding too much while you’re waiting for them to go over 50, because you don’t want to artificially inflate the number with food.
      • Example: if kitty is 43 and you feed a whole meal, or feed some HC, and the number bumps up to 52, is that the cat’s natural end-of-cycle rise, or is it food spike? What if it is food spike? Then if you shoot the 52, when the food wears off he might drop back to the 40’s (and when insulin kicks in a couple of hours later, you might have a problem). If the 52 is the cat’s natural rise, then he will probably keep rising for the next few hours until insulin kicks in. If you can’t tell whether the number is food spike or natural rise, it’s safest to wait. Your data will help you here. Study the spreadsheet. How much food spike does the cat usually get? How many hours after the shot does the insulin’s onset usually occur in this cat? At what number is the cat likely to be when onset occurs? If the cat does drop, how easy/hard is it to regain control of the numbers? How carb sensitive is he?
  • Test often (every 15-20 minutes, or at most every 30 minutes). You want to catch the rise the minute it starts. With most of our cats, once they start to rise they will really zoom. You want to get the insulin in as soon as possible, because it will be another 2-3 hours before the insulin kicks in and you don’t want to let the cycle get too far ahead of you.

Thanks for sending me the sticky @Gill & George !! As always, good to review the stickies even after reading them a few times, I still forget everything when I'm tired/anxious about shooting so I really appreciate it :bighug:

Ming is now at 50. I think I'll wait 15 more minutes to ensure he's rising and then shoot 6.5 units and test frequently today. Sound good?

Yay! AMPS = 56. He's eating the rest of his meal.

I'll be giving him the full 6.5 units today. This is the first time he's gone under 50 that I've caught although I do wonder if he went lower a couple of cycles ago when I wasn't home to monitor.

That is some AMPS today. Keep it safe Ming.

Not the lowest I shot! I shot at 50 on 4/22 and didn't post or ask for help because I needed to get ready for work lol!!! He was safe and my mom was able to test more frequently than she usually does. And of course he just bounced later during his PM cycle

Not working today so Ming decided to keep you busy!! Testing day for you !! :)

I know! I hardly wake up at 3:30 AM but for some reason, I decided to wake up and test Ming and also find his puke. He was sleeping where he usually slept so I woke up not thinking anything was out of the ordinary. I might have just gone back to sleep but I'm glad I didn't.

+1 = 76. I'll test at +4 or +5. Earlier if Ming starts to display "symptoms". I find when he gets low, he starts to breathe more heavily.

+5 = 106
+7 = 194

I'm glad he's coming up for this cycle because I need to go to an appt at 3 pm. But I hope he comes down during shot time :) But also not too much.

Ah... if only we could control our cats' BSL......
