5/6 Panic has Pancreatitis - Treatment Thread

Sorry about another thread but I thought it would help me keep everything for her a little more organized.
Previous thread confirming illness.

Summary:
Panic stopped eating Sunday (two days ago), suffering nausea. Gave 2mg Zofran. Took to regular vet Monday (yesterday), blood work came back "fine" (not really), sent home on a shot of cerenia. Did not improve, went to outside vet for a SNAP fPL test (pancreatitis confirmed), ketones confirmed (vet said +1, results say KET was 15). Dehydrated.

Sent home on:
Mirataz
Cerenia tablets
SubQ fluids
3 cans of Purina CN

Burprenorphine was unavailable, vet said she'd have it in two days (!!)
Ondansetron was unavailable, vet said she'd have it tomorrow (I still have zofran however)

I am waiting for the vet to email me how much fluid to give her. Currently watching videos on how to administer fluids. Wish there were some sort of painkillers to give her in the meantime. :(

Current status: Lethargic, refusing food but willing to lick off face if finger fed. Drinking lots.

Ondansatron is the generic name for Zofran. They are the same medication.

Can't your vet call around to see about getting buprenorphine for Panic?

.

Right, so I'm giving the zofran I have in the meantime but I expect I'll need more later.

I will email my vet and ask if there's any to get locally. She said the only kind she had was for IVs.

Ondansetron is a people drug. The generic is cheaper than the brand Zofran. All your vet needs to do is give you a prescription that you can fill at your local pharmacy. If the vet doesn't have buprenorphine in or can't get it, can you get some gabapentin for a couple days? Might be better than nothing. If you look at Maxi's posts the last couple days, Karen is going through the same thing as you.

I just called, she doesn't have gabapentin either. She said that the cerenia she gave us can act as a painkiller though when I asked if there was anything else she could take.

Cerenia isn't enough for pain med. Bupre or gab is best.

Fluids should be no more 100 ml per day. If there is any heart disease caution should be used.

Cerenia has some anti inflammatory properties, not pain control. Does the vet that did the panc test have pain meds? I've never tried it, but some folks have used CBD. Might be better than nothing.

Would that be 100 ml all at once? My vet hasn't gotten back with me with that info so I just sent her a little nudging reminder.

Dang, my vet said 100 ml twice a day, max 300. I'll stick with the 100 since I trust you guys.

Yes 100 ml can be done at one time. You can give daily.

If your giving cerenia it comes injectable, a bit pricey, you can give through the port of the fluid tubing. The shot really stings so it's great to give this way, especially if you can't get the pill down.

The first time Ollie got fluids, vet wanted to give 300. We settled on 60 ml. We know she has hcm. Cardiologist said no more than 200 ml per week. He even put it in his report. He was astounded vet want to give 300 at 1 time. He said it was an overload on the heart. Which I already knew.

Thank you, Paula!

Panic took her 100 ml well. She definitely seemed "bloated" on her back and sides after, hope that's normal? I can't imagine doing 300 now that I'm seeing it in real life!! Glad you were aware of that.
Luckily Panic takes pills fairly well but that is good to know about the cerenia injectable.

I will be updating her SS with everything she's taking and when ... whew. I feel like a vet tech after today!

Glad she did well. They get that bubble and sometimes it migrates.

Sheba used to have a lump in her shoulder/ side after subQ fluids. It should go completely before you give the next lot
I’m glad you have a diagnosis

Happened just like you said. :)

She is very groggy this morning, assuming from the gabapentin. Still no appetite.

My vet gave me three bags of fluids and the bag says they're single use so apparently I have to toss them after I first use them? Is three days going to be enough for her or should I get more?

Are you talking about the SubQ fluids? I used to use them until they were finished. Just use a new needle each time and don’t contaminate around where the needle goes into the bag. I used to hang the bag up on a coat hanger until the next day.

Yes, the bag was saying they were single use but maybe they where referring to when mixed with medicine? Thought it seems like a waste otherwise.

The vet tech just handed them to me and said the vet didn't have time to explain anything so I'm playing by ear lol.

Anyone know how much food I should be making sure she gets? It's a little hard to judge considering everything is pureed.

Good morning Elizabeth, hope you're getting some sleep through all of this.
Noah, Andy and Marco all detest the taste of oral BUPE, even the triple fish and whatever else my vet could think of. Noah had brutal dental issues and what gave him a few extra pain free years was transdermal BUPE. It's not cheap and has a short shelf life but was a real lifesaver. Mine came through a compounding pharmacy in syringes, the consistency of toothpaste, a little blob inside the outer ear and the dosage easy to measure. I could also vary the dosage; 1/4 the normal amount but 4 times a day if needed. Marco used to have frequent UTI's and if I couldn't get him in right away he would at least have a pain free day. None of the boys ever stumbled or got zonked.
Below is the strength and dosing for what I got.
Noah Strength 0.16mg/0.1ml. Dose 0.05ml twice daily.
Andy Strength 0.16mg/0.1ml. Dose 0.05ml Every 8 to 12 hours as needed.
Hi Panic, you being good to mama? :) Mama loves you! ;)

Good morning Dickson, thanks so much for posting!

My vet was telling me she on the phone yesterday about the bupe she was ordering for Panic, something about it being compounded and was the type to go on the roof of the mouth I believe. I'll compare what dosage the vet prescribes with what your kitties were on and see for similarities!

Poor girl is still sleeping, I keep waking her up to eat something. Have to go to work in a few, luckily I just discovered using a dropper is WAY easier/faster/cleaner than the feeding syringes or my finger feeding so at least I can leave my mom in charge of giving her meals while I'm gone - and she won't have to stick her hands in icky liver mush.

I find she prefers the chicken baby food to anything but we're all out now. She really seems to dislike the Purina CN.

Elizabeth. My Ollie is on bupre every 8 hrs, low maintenance dose. I get the liquid from the vet 0.5mg/ml. Ollie gets 0.2 ml every 8 hrs. I just squirt in cheek pocket.

A lot of sick cats will eat the a/d critical food, it's prescription food. If you can pick up about 4 cans, it might be good and Panic might like it. It thins easy with water to put in syringe.

Something to keep on hand. Also if out, look for an oral toddler or infant feeding syringe with adaptor. Usually holds 10-20 mls. Or a turkey baster works well. I found mine at Rite Aid.

I know! Poor baby is miserable. She'll get up, wobble for a couple feet then collapse where she's at :(

Ah a turkey baster, I might have one on those! Good idea. How many ml should she be eating?

I did request the A/D or Royal Canin Recovery but my vet must have not had any because she sent me out with the CN :/

How much does Panic weigh? You can find on Dr. Lisa's site the formula for amount of calories per day according to weight. Then depending on what food you are feeding and how many calories in a can, you can figure out how much she needs a day. I tried to get at least 150 calories a day into Neko. She was around 14 lbs. When eating fine she'd eat more calories, but I tried to get at least 2/3 to 3/4 or her regular daily calories in her when I had to help her.

Ah okay that helps, I know her daily calorie amount should be 180 for her weight. Not sure how many calories that liver shake is though. Maybe I should just stick with the cans so I can keep track.

I know she's dehydrated and I've been at work the past few hours but aside from an accident on a puppy pad last night/this morning I haven't noticed her attempting to pee any?
