Re: 5/6 Lucian AMPS 262

Now it is Lucian's turn to sweet talk Mz. Autumn to come down and join him, as right now I would be happy to have her just in the sunshine.

Geez Lucian, slow down some. Good thing I checked when I did. I was expecting him to drop today, was flat all night, but not so fast.

How long has he been diabetic? If only recently diagnosed, he may have earned himself a dose reduction with that 44.

I am so PO'd.

Right back to 600+. I guess I need to check on R or N or something, it was never recommended, I don't know why since he goes higher more often than any cat I've seen, but obviously I got to do something.

He was diagnosed Jan 4, '13. But don't know how long he was before then.

A diagnosis date of 1/4/2013 puts Lucien in the category of newly diagnosed. For the purposes of this board, cats are considered newly diagnosed until they have reached their one year anniversary of that diagnosis date.

OK, all I know is the DX date. Because he is so high, I shot thru the bounce and will reduce him to 1.75U in the AM unless someone has a better idea.

There are some possibilities to consider
- he could be a rapid metabolizer (though not as bad as Xuxu; he went from over 700 to hypo on miniscule doses of Lantus!)
- he may be on too high a dose, though it looks like you've been careful about increases and decreases.
- the insulin you're using, Lantus may not be lasting long enough and the glucose pops up then. Levemir might be an option.

In a log cabin, there's that space between 2 logs as they curve together (unless planed flat). This would be filled in with clay and straw chinking, to fill in and smooth out that curved gap. I think of using R as a way to 'chink' the last/first hours of long acting insulin doses where the glucose curve wears off steeply.

One important point is to start with a tiny dose (0.25 units) and curve it over the 4 hours it works, so you see how your cat responds. You start about 2 hours (or when you think it'll work best) before the regularl insulin pre-shot, test, give the supplemental R, and test each hour until the R should have worn off (about 4 hours). With experience and testing, you may identify an optimal time to give the R. Give the regular dose at its scheduled time if the pre-shot allows and continue hourly testing. Be prepared and have your hypo kit ready, as this is an experiment and you don't know how it will work out.

You might read over some of the posts and spreadsheets in the acromegaly forum for examples of how they used R.

Thank you, I appreciate the info, very much.

I feel I have to do something, unfortunately all I have is Lantus and no $$. I'm out on Workers Comp and can't pay the bills, much less anything else. If I had to work, he'd be dead. I'm really at a loss.

In many states, R is available over the counter, at a cost around $40, give or take.
On Craigslist in your area, you may find it for sale for less.

DCIN may have some suggestions for you, and maybe some help if you ask.

If you are comfortable with it, I am very good with editing resumes and thinking up finagles. Perhaps I can help you with job hunting? I did see the Workers Comp note and we can see if there is something you coul do that won't make that worse.
