Yesterday's Condo

Another crazy day! Cinco's Ophthalmology appointment was scheduled for 11:15 this morning, so of course he gives me 67 at 10:45 am! I gave him some MC and hoped the ride and appt., etc. would keep him from going lower, and it apparently did, as he was at 90 when we got home.

Once again, Cinco had to wake the household (meaning me) at 6:45 this morning. I don't know what his issue is. DH said he was actually enthusiastic about his first breakfast for a change. Then he paraded around the house, hollering at the top of his lungs. Sleepy bean hollering back seemed to calm him a little, but he had to get the last word in!

He complained all the way to the OV office, most of the time he was there (except during the exam, when he was very quiet), and all the way home. The OV said the pressure in his remaining eye was very good, but he has developed FHV (Feline Herpes Virus) in it. So another eye drop has been added to the regime. He looked at the leg and said it seemed to be doing well, since Cinco has finally stopped licking it. He told me that it is very rare for a cat with the kind of lymphoma in the eye that Cinco has to not develop it elsewhere and encouraged me to have him monitored by the oncologist, which is my plan at the moment (we go back the 20th). He was pleased with how well Cinco is doing otherwise - BGs, activity, appetite, etc. Follow up on the FHV in three weeks.

As soon as I got him home and administered more drops, checked BG, etc., he started licking his leg! :o  :YMSIGH:

Sasha and Harvey are due for their annual exams and rabies shots, so I've scheduled them for tomorrow. I plan to discuss the FHV diagnosis with their vet, as it is contagious among cats and symptoms can include sneezing, coughing and watery eyes, all of which Sasha has. It's always something!

DH's Ortho appt went well. The knee is much improved and the swelling has decreased significantly. The doctor said she could still feel some fluid on the knee, but it wasn't too bad, and based on our description, it has been draining off itself. She didn't feel it was necessary to do anything more to it. She found no evidence of ligament or tendon damage, so he's good to go. She said we were right to get it checked, even though it was improving on it's own. I feel better about it.

Lots of little tasks to catch up on around the house today, including visiting condos! Hope everyone has a great day.

Sending healing vines to all in need, and hugs to all their beans. :YMHUG:

Re: 5/6 Cinco AMPS 206 +2.5 88 +4 67 +6 90 OV appt

Nice greens for Cinco today. Sorry about the FHV in his other eye. Poor kitty. I hope the other kitties don't get it. Sending good vetty vines for Sasha and Harvey for tomorrow. What great news on your DH's knee.

Tricia, I admire the way you handle all these challenges with Cinco and plug right along. Cinco is luck to have you. Sorry about the virus. Sending prayers for Cinco to be the exception category and not most cats. His numbers are looking great.

Cinco....leave your leg alone, little man!!!

I'm sorry you've had to add another drop to the routine. We have FHV here. In fact, Frankie has such a severe case when she was 3 weeks old (long before we had her) that it scarred her corneas. At first they thought she was blind, but she actually can see pretty well, all things considered. No one wanted to adopt her, though...but we couldn't resist. Boy, does that cat love life! Anyway, we did have a big group flare up about a year or so after we adopted her, but everyone has been pretty good since then, aside from the occasional snuffle.

I agree...you are an awesome bean managing so much stuff! We are sending endless prayers that the lymphoma is completely gone and doesn't resurface anywhere else, and sending prayers that the FHV stays calm, too.

Great new for DH, too!

Have a great evening, Tricia!

Hi Tricia,
Chinco's numbers are looking very nice!

I'm glad to hear that OV thought the eye pressure was good!
I'm sorry about the FHV and another eye drop.
Sending healing vines.... I hope it will calm down quickly.

Wonderful news about your DH!

From Trix's condo...
When you had "group flare up" of FHV, how was it treated? Did all your kitties get anti-viral meds? Cinco's only symptoms are the signs the OV sees in his eyes, but Sasha's sneezing and sniffling make me suspect it for her.

At the time, it was a pretty bad flare up. It was before we had Trix, but we had 5 sick kitties at once. Mario was doing this horrific reverse sneezing thing that caused him to projectile vomit. Zen was so congested that his nose was fire-engine red and he was open mouth breathing. Noah was also congested, but since his nose is black we could see a color change! Both Frankie and Petey were congested and had conjunctivitis. The only "treatment" that was recommended by our vet at the time (not the same vet we have now) was ABs, "just in case". Since they were so sick, it probably wasn't a bad course of treatment, even though we knew the origin was viral.

I did try using lysine for a while, but to be honest, it was hard to get it into everyone, and it really didn't seem to make a difference. More than anything, I think a good diet and keeping stress at bay has helped. We haven't had any issues since that flare up (which was probably about 9 years ago now)...every once in a while, someone gets a little snuffly, but that seems to be the extent of it.

I know that's probably not much help...unfortunately, I don't have a "magic bullet" answer!

Re: 5/6 Cinco AMPS 206 +2.5 88 +4 67 +6 90 OV appt

Oh Boy one ore thing to deal with! When Emma adopted us she had a severe inflammation in both her eyes, her eyes were crusted nearly shut. Not sure if it was FHV or calcivirus. We opted not to get the test and just treat as if she had it, anti-viral eyedrops and l-Lysine 500 mg twice a day. She was on the eyedrops (Cidofovir from Wedgewood Compounding Pharmacy) for 2 months and still gets the l-Lysine but only half as much. We get it in capsules and just sprinkle it on her food. We still clean her eyes twice a day, but she hasn't had a flareup since and I would have thought the stress of having Izzy around would bring it on if anything would.

Re: 5/6 Cinco AMPS 206 +2.5 88 +4 67 +6 90 OV appt

Sounds like a mixed bag at the vet visit....Glad the pressure isn't increasing, but BOO on the FHV

Hopefully the new eyedrops will help and he'll be able to fight it off

VERY nice numbers Cinco! Trying to show China up? (of course I'm not at all surprised by her numbers today considering the dive last night!)

You take such good care of Cinco, Tricia! One of the Worlds Best Beans!!

Re: 5/6 Cinco PMPS 197

Aw, Chris. You make me blush! ;-) I don't do anything everyone here on this board wouldn't do. We are all here because we love our furry babies. It's so wonderful to have a group of like-minded people to share this with, to bounce ideas off of, and whose brains we can pick! It makes a difficult journey so much easier. I hope China comes down a little for you (but not too much!) and surfs safely tomorrow.

Thanks for the info, Ann and Amy. I have been giving L-lysine to Minka and Sasha for several months, but not to Cinco I guess I'll start him on it now. I stopped Sasha's last week after that trembling she was doing, and I haven't seen her do it since, so I'm not sure if I want to start her back on it or not. I think I'll wait and see what her vet says tomorrow. I guess when you have a houseful of geriatric cats, there is always going to be some problem, but I am getting a little tired of trucking someone to the vet every other week, not to mention the bills! :o  This is the price we pay for all those snuggles and purrs - I won't ever say it isn't worth it!

Thanks for the vines, Mariko and Carla. As you know, all this support really helps!

Catherine, you are very sweet to say that. I really don't see what choice I have but to soldier on. It's hard to be sure you're making the right decisions, though. I'd hate it if Cinco ends up with lymphoma and we catch it too late. I just don't want to mess with his QOL right now - he's doing soooo well (anti-jinx)!

Time to check and see where he's going tonight! BBL.

Cinco's SS is looking very nice right now.

Sorry about the vetty visit shuttle you are having to do with the crew. But when you say:
I just don't want to mess with his QOL right now - he's doing soooo well
shows that you are doing a great job. :-D
