Robbie woke me at about 3:50am - snuggle and holding him worked and he was quiet until 5:00am (got a whole extra hour out of him) but the goal was to get to 5:30/6am but that proved difficult. At 5:00am (about pmps +11.5) I gave in and fed and shot him (he'd tested 295). So basically I'm overlapping by 30 minutes each day and getting earlier and earlier with the shots in the morning and than again in the evening - which is not really working for me job wise. Right now I'd ideally love to check him at noon (amps+7) but I can't leave work and my husband is on a job all day. Here was our morning:
5am (amps +11.5) 295 shot 5.00 and fed breakfast (chopped Grill FF with water)
8am 292
9am 250 - gave a spoonful of food (watery cod/shrimp FF) as he was crying, fussing and I had to leave. Probably won't get another spot check till after 3pm.

I have two cats who's whiskers project forward instead of sideways. When they sniff your face to see if you're awake, they tickle... and cause me to wake up. I now sleep with the bedroom door closed!

I miss the quality time snuggling with them, but I've got to get some sleep - they're clearly not bringing home the kibble!

I realize you said Robbie screams if you lock him in another room - or lock him out.

Here's a thought... I've done this with friends' dogs that were visiting. At their house, the young one sleeps in a crate. Used to be in the dining room, but they've since moved it to the bedroom. He loves his crate, so it's not like it's punishment for him. He came to visit. I left my two and their two in the kitchen/diningroom. Okie was in a crate. He cried all night long - in spite of having the others right around him. The second night I moved the crate in my bedroom. He was quiet, and when I started moving around, he woke up... in that order.

Although it may seem cruel, if you could keep him in the room, but out of your face, perhaps that would work. If you have it, and room enough, I would try a dog crate (I use the wire mesh kind) with a small litter box and food/water bowls mounted on the side. That way, he has all the conveniences of home, can see you, hopefully not disturb you, and will ride out the night until you wake up... or at least that could be the plan!

Thanks Lu - I have a very small house - too small for a crate - plus he frequently pees or poops or plays with the dog etc. during the night I would never take this kind of joy at living away from him. For me his freedom around the house is part of his quality of life and if I can't get it back to where he lets me sleep long enough than something is very seriously wrong. At this point, like with a newborn baby, I am willing to get up and do the "feeding" stuff and cuddling even if it puts me off a bit. On top of him feeling lousey all the time I would consider it cruel (in my particular case) to also crate him up. Plus I sincerely doubt he'd EVER shut up - he won't even let me close the door to the bathroom totally some times - flings it open with his paw and comes and sits at my feet.

I'm thinking this might be payback for you chasing him around the house checking for ketones!

Ellen,
When he was OTJ, was his routine the same? Waking you up all hours of the night for food and such? Is this just a "diabetes" thing, or has he always not valued a good night's sleep?

The 295 was a nice wake up, though? I do agree however that TID is more and more looking like an attractive choice. He just refuses to get more than 9ish hours out of a shot.

Robbie has never really valued a good nights sleep for ME - before diabetes he was free feeding on dry food so he had it to snack on all night long pretty much - he got half a can of FF in the am and half in the pm and I shudder to think how many handfuls of dry food throughout the day and than a full bowl when I went to bed at night. Once he was diagnosed and we cut dry food out totally he started morphing over to this 4 can a day routine. So before I went to bed he'd get a full can and than he'd wake me at about 5am and he'd get a can. He seems more INTENSE about wanting the food now - but it's not totally different. I will say he seems to get almost anxious when his numbers go below 260 - like he's not quite sure what it feels like.

We had an interesting accident tonight -I got stuck at work and was getting kind of frantic as shot time was approaching - finally at 5:40 my husband called and said he was home - I was in the middle of this mess at work and I said "test, feed, shoot - I"m guessing he's over 400 so I don't even need to know right now" Well he did just that but he shot 5.50 (why? cause I thought that's where we were since 5.0 isn't doing a thing). Anyway, I don't ask a lot of questions when stuff like this happens I usually just yell out of frustration. But tonight I just thought "oh, screw it" and the numbers well, almost the exact same as last night.

Oh, and he's been slamming the bathroom door open since he was a kitten! He used to come and jump into my lap but he got too big. DID get a KETONE test in again today and all is FINE there.
