Are you still feeding Ricky dryfood?
Dryfood is the kiss of death to our kitties. I spent countless nights researching food and this disease when Willow was first diagnosed and the vets almost killed her.
We have two other cats who use to eat dryfood, it took months to ween them off of it, they are still not completely off. We give a few nuggets when they refuse to eat their wet food. One thing I noticed was both of our other cats lost weight, they no longer have huge bellys. We found out dryfood is crack for kitties and very hard to ween them off.
If Willow has one nugget of dryfood her numbers skyrocket.
Once you get control of their food getting control of their numbers will follow. Willow is very sensitive to insulin, just a pin drop more or less have a huge affect on her.

Yes, Ricky is 13 years old and he has never eaten anything but dry food. He's always refused wet food and acts as if that is something to bury. I don't see how I could make him eat something that he thinks smells like waste. Ricky doesn't have a big belly. He's never been fat or chunky. My vet told me to put Ricky on Purina DM dry food as the best option, but since discussing it on this site I've tried Evo, Young Again Zero Carb, and Dr. Elsey's Clean Protein. So far Dr. Elsey's a hit with him and that has 5% carbs. He has not liked the taste of Young Again. I don't know what more I can do.

Hi

Have you tried mixing the dry with some wet?
We do fancy feast chicken only. Willow seems to be allergic to fish,
turkey is higher carbs then the chicken. The fish is the lowest carbs.
We tried a half dozen different kinds of dry and wet food.

No I have not tried mixing. Long ago I offered him wet food and he tried to bury it. I have 3 other cats who eat wet food but Ricky wants no part of that scene.

That is because it is like crack to our kitties.
If I was you I would be trying everything you could to get him off that dryfood.
Our two other cats refused wetfood at first. They still will drive me nuts when we don't make it just right for them. One of our cats I have to pet him while he is in front of the food and let him know it's okay to eat. If I just put the bowl down he won't eat! Ahhhhhh it drive me nuts sometimes because he will not stop merowing until I do this. My wife was the one who first started this with him

I don't think it's like crack for Ricky because he turned to dry food as soon as he was old enough to eat solid food. He was 5 weeks old when I saw him starting to eat dry food. Even then he'd try to bury wet food. A cat eating dryfood may need more insulin than one who eats only wet food, but non the less they can still find the right dose can't they? Pam

Hi

Not sure on finding the right dose on dryfood . When I first joined this group I was advised to pull the wet food and given links regarding dryfood. I spent a lot of time researching cat food because I needed to have a better understanding of what we would be dealing with.
I even read some interesting articles on prescription pet food that were an eye opener.
I can tell by Willows numbers if she got into the other cats dryfood. If she hits red or black she got into the dryfood. If she is pink or yellow it is because she has been eating her wet food all day.
The only way to try and revert this is by getting our kitties into green and blue for long periods. I still have hope I'll be able to get Willow to where she won't need insulin anymore. One of the members on here kitty took two years before she was healed.
 
Willow, We each have to deal with what we have. I can't let Ricky go without eating. And he would rather starve than eat wet food. Yes, it would have been easy if Ricky was a cat who ate both wet and dry, to just remove the dry. But he's not in that category.

Hi,

I completely understand what your dealing with.
Cats can be very difficult at times. I hope you get a food that will help you control his numbers.
