Good Morning LL!! :coffee::coffee::coffee: (LOTS today Elsa! please.....), and Happy Caturday!

LL! It's is I, Elsa, kitteh barista!, president and CEO of Coffee Cat! Life is GOOD! GUESS WHAT! Bug and Lola are exhausted from I dunno! but they still want to be working today too at PawPrints Pizza, so..... They have decided that today is TURN-AROUND TRIPLE CATURDAY! They are doing triples on everything! Kinda cool huh! They say that they wants to give all kitties some fun times today, triple funs! What will that be.... I dunno! so. well. anyways. Coffee time! For today, I proudly offer Elsa's special 10 hour energy coffee, and Double shot Breve's, with beans from high in the Brazilian Mountains.... and for my mocha fans: a VENTI Quad Blueberry infused white mocha/mocha blend with white chocolate chips melted within, swirled with a raspberry puree, topped with a strawberry infused whip garnished with caramelized berry sprinkles and white chocolate curls and a caramel drizzle.......SWEET! OH! No worries, a dollop of 4 berry and vanilla and caramel swirl ice cream, on top of a dollop of fudge, topped with caramel and chocolate drizzle.... Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh....... mega good!

I hope everyone has had a great week. We have been.... well, busy again!:joyful::cool: I just can't imagine not being on the go. ;) It keeps us out of trouble, and makes for great times! I often think back on the weeks happenings, and wonder how in the world did we do all that! It was the same this past week. It has been a good week. :):):)

And first up today.... Elsa News. In my heart I knew what was ailing her, so I decided to take her to the vetty to confirm or deny my assumptions. Sometimes we always know, don't we? Elsa is Stage 3 Renal Failure. :( BUN was 90 ( 36 is high end normal), Creatnine was 4.3 (2.4 high end normal) and the ratio was 2.1 within normal range. Other significant factors was low potassium (3.5, with 3.4 being low end normal), and HCT of 25 (low end normal 29) so she is also anemic. Weight is 5.2lbs, down from 7.5lbs last September. Plus her mouth is in dire need of a dental, which we cannot do since she is consider a renal failure kitty. Ah my poor girl... So we have begun to treat as best we can. SubQ fluids, a renal diet as best I can, and possibly some AB's to deal with the mouth. I have not started the AB's yet, as I wanted to see how she responds to the fluids, and the food so that I have a good baseline scenraio so I will know if the AB's will upset her tummy even more. Her appy is still there, she just doesn't eat enough. I have yet to decide if I will syringe feed her or not. She has not taken well to that in the past. She does not appear to be nauseous, but have meds for that too in the event it becomes a problem, as well as the pepcid if that is needed too. She seems to be handling this fine, is up and about, still spends sometime out on the deck, is being a normal Elsa. As I type she is curled up in her kitty bed snoozing the morning away. And on a good note: her BG was a glorious 90! :D And so begins a new journey for her. We have vowed to keep her as comfortable as possible for as long as she has. We hope that with the addition of fluids, and an increased focus on renal foods she will be with us a bit longer. Keep on truckin' Elsa.

Elsa, Summer 2013

It has been a week in the pool! It has just become the norm for us, we go each week, and just never tire of it. It proves to be such fun for both boys, and their excitement with it all has not wavered. Nicholas's swim classes continue, only Wednesday this week, as Monday was a holiday. Nicholas is enjoying his new class, and the challenges that being up a level brings. He's doing well, learning the basics of side breathing, breaststroke and backstroke. He literally runs to class when it is time. :):joyful: Outside of class he still is our little energizer fishie, loves swimming in the big pool, and will often forgo the beach area play for the 6 and unders. He'd rather be in deep water. William continues to do well, and has gotten very comfortable in the water. He likes to float, and will do so, on his tummy in the shallow beach area. This week he was once again scooting along the bottom, floating on his tummy, using arms and legs to move about. He's learning that jumping in can be fun too. How fun! Lessons ought to go well for him too, when he is eligible. We are grateful for our time in the pool. It has all enabled to boys to explore anther aspect of growing up, one they really enjoy. Our swim days this week were Wednesday and Thursday. We did not swim Friday night as the boys had an evening Mariners baseball Game, complete with a fireworks show after the game. What fun!!
GO NICHOLAS! GO WILLIAM !!

William: The Fish!

And.... yes! We are still doing the Friday Night Burger Feast, after Nicholas's swim time. Although we had to do this for lunch, since the boys had a ball game that night. Fun part was, William could join us too. Nicholas loves it, and continues to look forward to it each week. We have this running bet on how many extra pickles (I always ask for extra as he LOVES pickles) we will actually get. It varies, anywhere from 2 to 10. So.... in the interest of actually having extra pickles I started to bring even more last week. I swear Nicholas did his version of the Mannie Fuds Dance once he saw them. William too!

The week was busy.... three days of adventure after adventure. I was grateful, in a way, that it was only a three day week with the boys, and that we are back on a regular schedule. ;) Weather was great this week, so we were able to spend alot of time outdoors, from the play park at Meadowdale Play Park, the Beaches of Juanita Beach, and the banks of the Skykomish River at Big Eddy, near Gold Bar. What a fun road trip with the boys! never ever a dull moment in the back seat of the car. We have been so sunny and warm, with temps in the 75/80 range. WOW, incredibly nice for the PNW. On Thursday Nicholas went beach swimming out in the waters of Juanita Beach. What fun for him! William was content to remain in the beach water break with his buckets and shovels. Good times for both boys. The Friday trip to the river was awesome. :):):):) :joyful::smuggrin::) :woot: Both boys love this place, it is near the mountains, with a great river to play in and next too. As much as they love Juanita Beach, both boys said that the river is so much better! Nicholas went swimming for a few, not long though as that water was cold. William waded out some, and was content with his sand and rocks. Both boys still love to toss rocks. We also had out Friday night Burger Feast while at the river. Very fun stuff! Wednesday, after Nicholas's swim, we were also able to spend some time with the boys Grammie Connie. I am so grateful to her for helping me with William when Nicholas needs to be in the pool. She is a god-send. Boys love it there too. It truly was a great week!

Nicholas & William: River Life...

For my own personal time, I continue to hike the local trails here when I can. I finally made that mountain hike, well the lower end of the mountains. Still alot of snow and ice wayyyyyyyyyy upppppppppp thereeeeeeeeeee. So.... I headed over to Leavenworth, and hiked the Icicle Gorge Creek, which is close to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. It is absolutely gorgeous there. The hike itself is a mile loop, following the path of Icicle Creek. Wildflowers were in bloom everywhere, blankets of them covering any available space. That was beautiful. On the return trip I also did a very short trail that parallels the Wenatchee River: The Tumwater Pipeline. Tons of wildflowers and nice views there too! Deception Falls was another stop off point on the way home. There is a mile loop trial that allows alot of viewpoints of the various falls, upper, middle and lower. What a delight! The falls too were incredible: fast and furious. Monday, being a holiday, gave me another day off. I decided to head on out early and investigate the river access for the park that we all visited last week for Nicholas's Field trip. I also knew that the Whitehorse Trail, a 28 mile connector trail from Arlington (site of the park) to Darrington. I ended up hiking more of that trail than I intended, like 8 miles, mainly because it was early. few people were out, and I was curious what it was like. I enjoyed it, hiked to the first old train trellis over the river and turned around at that point. I did not find access to the river from this trail, as I expected I would, but did find it, overwhelmingly so, from another trail there, Eagle Trail, that I just wanted to see, since it was reported to be a nice Wetlands Park, which it was. SO glad I went there, as the Stillaguamish River access is awesome, doable for the boys and offers endless river views, and access. WOOT!

Normalcy in Three MusketeerVille! :cat::cat::cat: Kitties are doing well, and there really isn't much change from last week. Bug is still being cuddly, Elsa is still holding her own even with a few new issues, and Lola is still escaping. It is interesting that Bug has no desire to be outdoors. Lola however.... Elsa seems to be ding OK this morning. She's made two trips outdoors, made three passes at the fuds bowl with a few nibbles, meowed at me a few times, and is now lounging on one of Mannie's old kitty beds.
For old times sake I though I'd repost one of Mannie's old condos.... from December 22, 2012 I included excerpts as this condo was rather long, seems all of Mannie's were.

Yesterday was..... BOUNCE day in MannieLand. and what an ugly one it was... I expected it, after the visit to the green lagoon the day before. I had hoped that it wouldn't be as high as it was. But alas... all the way to the black floor. We will hope for a better day today, and quietly close the door on yesterday. Think blue, think green Mannie! He has a great amps, looking good so far. Lubs ya big guy.

All is well in MannieLand. , and with Nanner Lake, aka the basement. The flood waters have receded, and the kitties are elated, especially Elsa. She is back to bed sleeping, purring while she sleeps. It is good to see her there, relaxed and back to a normal routine. The carpets are still a little bit of an issue, but we hope to have them somewhat rectified by days end. Mannie and DGS had a great day together yesterday - still best buds, and I don't think that will ever change. Nicholas can sometimes be a little rough for Mannie's old bones, but seems to understand when I remind him to be gentle. They shared lots of pets yesterday. Gentle pets. YAY! We actually got some sun yesterday - WOO HOO! Blue skies! What a relief for all of us here. Mannie was elated too - he spent some of it sunbathing. A few rays made it into his sleeping area, aka the Nanner pile. This morning we had a great test, feed and shoot and clean plate club, purrs and lots of cuddles. With encouragement, normalcy in MannieLand.

Have a great day everyone. Today is get ready for Christmas day: grocery shopping to be done!... and work on the basement carpets day... BUSY! I hope to be able to get a walk or hike in to the shore. it's been a while since I have been able to go....

Hey everybody!! COOKIE WEEK continues... I think we need to spend sometime visiting cookie bakeries... maybe travel on the roads and visit as many as we can find. NOM NOM NOM Uhhhhhh we gots to clean up Maui's kitchen too... Ollie ad I tried yesterday, but I guess we missed the chocolate footprints on the ceiling... We can bake somewhere too if anybody wants! I so need some Christmas cookies with lots of gooey frosting,. so... uhhhhh - don't tel my bean, about the gooey frosting part, 'k? AND! We gots a Christmas party to plan too! Where do you guys wanna party? Let me know I am ready for anything!!~~ Mannie

And completely OT: Here are some photos from DGS's and my adventures yesterday: swimming, and a quick visit to a small pond and water all near wher DGS's dad works, He's always comments on it as we drive by so today I thought we'd stop and check it out. Very pretty! I've included the FaceBook links for anyone that wants to see all the photos, and the videos: Swimming and Waterfall.

Aw, I'm sorry about Elsa's news. Trix has been teetering between Stage 3 and Stage 4 CKD for over a year now - take a look at her SS labs tab. I do think fluids help a lot. Trix gets 100mls daily, plus she's also on benazepril to help with both her BP and her CKD. Have you checked Elsa's BP? Sometimes an elevated BP can elevate those kidney values, too. When we first got Trix's BP under control, her kidney values improved. Keeping them eating is the most important thing, and the reason I get a little freaked when Trix gets fussy. Unlike my other kitties who are healthy, if Trix doesn't eat, it could spiral out of control too quickly. Like Elsa, she really needs a dental, but we can't do it, either. In these types of cases, pulse ABs can definitely help. Since Elsa is interested in eating but not eating enough, I do wonder if she may have some underlying nausea - not enough to cause her to stop eating all together, but enough to make her not want to chow down. With Trix, I try to stay ahead of tummy issues, which is why she gets Pepcid BID, and cerenia every 36 hours. I find if I mess with that at all, she gets spit-up-ish and her appy starts to falter. I know Ann has had great luck with slippery elm bark with Tess, too. Sending prayers for our favorite barista!!

And, of course, awesome shots of the boys enjoying the great outdoors!! Mannie....you are such a handsome nanner king!!!!

@Amy&TrixieCat Hi Amy :):):) THX on Elsa. I have noticed that the fluids over the past couple of days really has helped her. They asked me to just go with every other ay initially to see how that goes. We may need to up that daily. As far as I know Elsa's BP is within range, I do remember the vet saying she checked it, but for the life of me I cannot remember (Shesshhhh) what it was. I wonder too on the underlying Nausea, as she goes to eat several times a day, but just doesn't eat much. I suspect we will need to get that going soon, as well as the pepcid. Bring on those gelcaps! :woot: THX so much fr your input, I value it greatly, as I know you've done so well with Trixie. I will have to look into the Slipper Elm Bark too. I hope we can keep lsa with us much longer! Many thx on the pics, and Mannie too. I love that pic, it is so Mannie.

I'm sorry about Elsa. I hope the fluids help her feel better. I'm glad the kitties are doing well otherwise. How fun the boys got to go to a ballgame and fireworks show. It sounds like you got some nice hikes in this week.

So very sorry to read about Elsa, it is so hard when our fur kids get older and start having "mature" kitty issues. Our 15 year old Tillie is starting to have some apply issues. We know she has IBD and low potassium, from unknown origin as her kidney values have been good. We are taking her for a check in a little over a week.

Paws crossed the fluids help our Elsa feel better!:bighug:
Anne

@carfurby Hi Carla :):):)Many THX on Elsa. So far the fluids seem to really be helping her. YAY! Yupp, the boys had a blast at the ball game. My DSIL posted some photos on FB, and they really look like they had such a good time. And to be down on the field too! THX too on the hikes. I did enjoy them, esp the ones in Leavenworth. it is a small town nestled in the mountains, and very pretty!

@Anne & Zener (GA) :):):) Hi Anne, and many THX on our girl. I so know on those mature kitty issues. Elsa is two months shy of her 19th birthday. so some of this is expected. I will hope that what we do will help her feel better, maybe slow progression down some. I am sorry about Tillie too, Mannie fought low potassium for some time. We had him on a supplement for that, that really made a difference. Many thanks on those crossed paws! I think they are helping! :)

Hi Michelle,
I'll have more time to read about your week's adventures tomorrow, but tonight just wanted to tell you how much we hope our wonderful Kitteh Barista, Elsa, will be able to enjoy her life with you for as long as she is able. I'm so glad that the fluids are helping and I know that Amy, Ann, and others will be able to help you.

Looking forward to seeing your pictures tomorrow.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

How cool to see a Mannie Condo! Those were good times! And your pictures are great as usual, after your week w/ the boys, I'd be flat on my back, but YOU went hiking!!!:woot:

I'm sorry to hear about Elsa, but Tess has been hovering around Stage 2 to Stage 3 for 3 or 4 years now. Pretty much all the we have done until recently has been a low phosphorus diet. After her DKA we started daily fluids and I think that is what has really perked her up. Her appy has improved and she has regained half a pound, she was down to 5 and is over 5.5 now. What renal diet are your trying? At least her BG is good so you don't need to worry too much about the carbs. A couple foods we have had good luck w/ are the Daves Restricted Diet Pork Dinner, 19% carbs, 34 kcal/oz, 134 phos/100 kcal and Iams Maximum Calorie Plus, 9% carbs, 55kcal/oz, 159mg phos/100 kcal.

It took a few weeks but I think getting the toxins flushed out of her system w/ the squids really perked her appetite. We haven't needed any appy stimulant or anti-nausea meds since March.

After the appy returned we got her back to eating raw. It's higher calorie and the better quality protein puts less of a strain on the kidneys. The latest theory is that restricted protein diets are not necessary for CKD until Stage 4, but the protein should be high quality. The higher calorie foods have really helped w/ the weight gain, too.

@Ann & Tess Morning Ann :coffee::coffee::coffee: ah yes on the Mannie condo. They were good times. THX on the pics, and LOL on the hiking. I do find that it mellows tings out for me, so off I go. :woot: I suspect that this has been going on with Elsa for some time too, she was borderline last year, now it is escalated some, so we will be more "aggressive" in how we manage her care. So far the fluids are really helping in over all demeanor. This morning she was actually asking for breffis. The vet gave me some of their renal foods k/d and royal canin), sheshh, but she is eating them so we will use up the lot. The rest is pretty much just FF, so I will need to adjust some there. At least I don't have to worry about carbs! ;) So... looks like I can avoid the appy stim. I will check into Daves and the Iams. She has never had raw, I will have to see if she will like it. I have read that too on the theory re protein diets. THX for the input, most appreciated!

Hi again, Michelle,
Your hiking adventures last week were amazing: what a lot of ground you covered! I love the pictures of the Deception waterfalls, the spring wildflowers (which are gorgeous), and the rivers. Neat that you found another river that will be a fun place for the boys.

And very cool to read the old Mannie condo and to see that great pic of the Nanner King. Brought back old times.

Have a good week. I'm so glad that Nicholas is doing well in the new swim class, and that William is also a water rat.

Thank you, Elsa, for the delicious espresso. Keep on truckin'!

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Sorry to here about Elsa, but I am glad to hear she is doing well at this time. Thank you for sharing this condo, I love reading your posts, though with how active you are, I don't know how you find time!

Michelle, if you decide try raw Nature's Variety chicken is the lowest phos I've found. Petco and Petsmart carry it now. Radcat Lamb is good if you can find it and SmallBatch Turkey is pretty low too.

Hi everyone! Happy Sunday night. I am sorry I've missed just about everyone's condo the past few days... I will do better tomorrow, tonight if I can stay awake.:rolleyes::woot: I went hiking today, to Cooper River, over Snoqualmie Pass, near Salmon la SAc. Cooper River hike is a keeper. I really enjoyed that one. Not hard at all, but you gotta love it when trail book says a gain of 400 feet. It was more like 1100 feet, with all the ups and down, they just took ending minus beginning to get that 400, not what one actually climbs.:p:confused::woot: seshhhh... River was beautiful. I found 4 (I think) river access points, two of which let you get to the banks. Ate my lunch at one of them. Brought a cheeseburger today. lol, but YUM! The water was so clear, really fast too, some of which goes through a gorge. I found one awesome spot down from the trailhead, loved that one too, until I read that is was private property, seems two homes were perched on top of the cliff. What a bummer! oh well. I didn't out stay my welcome. Ran into one obstacle about 1.5 miles into what was a 7 mile hike. A big 3 to 4 feet round tree had fallen right across the trail. It was on a slope too, so that 3/4 foot tree was more like 5 feet to climb over. After driving all that way, already getting into that hike there was no way I was turning back. So.... tossed the backpack and the poles over and climbed over, someone had notched out a section near trails edge . so I really only had to haul myself up to that notched section, 4' maybe. My shoulder didn't like it but we made it just fine. Woot! Fun times. not. On the plus side: no more horse droppings to dodge after that. :joyful:. and so went today: a gorgeous fun filled day on really nice river. The drive over too was just great! It was such a treat to drive through some very small rural towns, I really enjoyed this drive to Cooper. :woot::woot::woot::woot::woot::woot::joyful:

Elsa update: She ate ALL OF HER DINNER!!!!! :) WTG Elsa! She continues to appear to feel better tonight. She and Lola are sleeping side by side as I type this, after they both took a bath. And it is wonderful to see that meatloaf position gone.

@Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) Hi Ella! THX on the pics. I was busy! I really hadn't intended to do as much on the second day, but somehow ended up doing just that. It as nice to find another river spot for the boys too, in case we can't make one of the others, or if we have weather issues. It was a good find. Deception falls is always a winner, and something one can tack onto the end of a day. It's a nice place to stop for a bit. I a always partial to the river stuff... my all time go to place. It has been fun t back a re-read some of the old condos. Sure did bring back alot of memories. All good ones too. They were good times back then. THX on the boys and the pool. It has been such fun to watch them grow in the water.

@Marshmellow & Steve Hi Steve! THX on Elsa. She has had a good couple of days, ever since we started fluids. YAY! THX for the rest of what you wrote. Made my day! I just like being busy I guess, seems odd when I have little to do.

@Ann & Tess HI Ann - thx. I remember reading about nature Valley raw CK in your condo. Nice that both Petco and Petsmart carry it, they are so clsoe to my house. I may pickup a sample and see how she likes it. So far she thinks that K/D is so good , and go figure. at least she is eating. I wonder f she'd like lamb... might have to try that too, if I can find it anywhere.

I'm so sorry to hear Elsa's news but at least she is in the best hands. For her teeth you might like to try Plaque Off. I've just started Vyktor on it. There are two versions, one for cats and one for everyone else. The only difference in the cat version is that it contains Brewers yeast to make it tasty to them. Vyktor doesn't mind it sprinkled on his fuds. In my googling about it I found people using it for their show dogs saying that it softens the plaque which then comes off. They were raving about it. Vyktors only been on it about 3 weeks (it says it takes 6-8 weeks). You might want to check its ok for real kitties first though, I know hyperthyroid cats shouldn't have it. I think that's because of the iodine - it's made out of seaweed.

@Vyktors Mum Hi Serryn THX, I have heard of that stuff, and shall look into it. I think way back when I had some, or something similar for Mannie. It has to have been Plaque off. How quickly we forget. Wow, sure would be helpful for Elsa

@Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) - and she just had another helping as well. That is so nice to see! Eat up Elsa! Hooray for Rusty too!:)

I'm sorry Elsa is declining.... Paws crossed that the changes and fluids will help her 'keep on truckin'

I'm gonna have to start a notebook of places to visit.

@rhiannon and shadow Morning Rhiannon :coffee::coffee::coffee: THX on Elsa. The addition of fluids and the diet change seem to be helping. YAY! She is eating better, and seems to feel better too.
I have one of those notebooks... and lots of printed pages of things to do, places to go. :) So many cool things out there!
