Already a good start to the day! :-D I've got my pot of coffee made ~O) and a good 5 hours of sleep in me (thus, the pot of coffee). Good thing I work at home so I can take a quick nap in the afternoon!

Champ was his sweet, purry, flop on the floor at my feet, pet me PLEASE, little self this morning. I'm going to try reducing his food starting today and see if I can stand it. When he cries, I usually give in, but I need to remember the bigger picture...a lighter Champ is a healthier Champ. ;-) The good thing about reducing his food is that I usually eat less, too, because whenever he hears the pantry door, refrigerator, or any bag crackling, he comes running and then I feel bad. I tend to eat a lot of yogurt cuz I can sneak eat that without him knowing.

I hope everyone has a great Tuesday!!

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

Good morning guys .. sunny yellow for champ this morning! Good luck on the weight loss plan .. that is to funny about needing to sneak food so champ doesn't hear the pantry doors .. We always have to stand guard in the kitchen while our kitties eat (they eat different foods) and we ALWAYS have our hands in the snack cupboard .. not good! Have a great day guys!

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

How true is that, about the sneaking anything so kitties and puppies don't come flying from across the house because they heard you, and of course it must be something for them.
Excellent number for Champ this fine Tuesday morning.. may i join you in another cup of coffee ~O) , because we both know that 5hrs sleep is enough @-).
I hope that you get to have your nap today Patty I-)

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

too funny! the whole family eats less because champ needs to lose a couple of pounds!

you know to reduce it slowly, right? - i don't know by how much but would think he might not even notice if you're going slow enough. well, that's stupid, of course he'll notice. punkin knows when he's shorted at all - he much now how many mouth-fulls of food he gets.

going for the dr pepper now - have a great morning!

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

Nice start to the day for Champ, good luck on the diet. I think in Dr. Lisa'a article she says that you can supplement 15% of food w/ plain meat. Chicken has no carbs and you can remove pretty much all the fat.

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

I took the time last night to read over Dr. Lisa's info on weight loss, how many calories he needs for his proper weight, how much weight is safe to lose, etc. For his snacks, I only feed Champ chicken breast that I've parboiled (so it's raw on the inside). I cut it into small cubes and measure out 1 oz which i wrap in saran wrap, but all the little 1 oz bundles into a freezer bag, and freeze them. I was taking four or five oz. out at a time to defrost to be used over 2 days, but would end up feeding Champ all of them in one day because he kept begging for food. Now I'm only going to take out 2 oz. a day to be divided up into four snacks, after a week, I'll try to reduce that to only 1 oz. a day. He does love his chicken, though. I think I'll leave it even more raw next time because it makes him chew it more, hopefully slow him down on eating it, plus it cleans there teeth!! Isn't that amazing? Eating raw meat cleans their teeth :-D

I just heard a loud "thunk" somewhere in the house. I get up to investigate, thinking Champ is playing with one of his mice and slid across the kitchen floor and into a cabinet (it's happened before!). I don't see him anywhere. Then I see him coming from the direction of my room, licking his lips over and over. It doesn't look like the kind of lip licking where he just ate something, but kind of like he got hurt or something. I don't know. And I don't have any food left out anywhere so he couldn't have gotten into something. When he was little, he used to eat shoelaces and even ate a lei once!!! Yes, the whole thing. He threw it up (and the shoelaces) which is the only way I knew he had eaten it. I used to yell at my daughter all the time to not leave anything on the ground that he could swallow, because he would try to eat ANYTHING. But he hasn't done that in years. I'll have to keep an eye on him I think. You never know what hunger will do to a cat.

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

Patty, could you please confirm with me that we are talking about boneless skinless chicken breasts like the kind i buy at the store to cook for me and my husband, and it's more than ok to feed it to them raw. I just need to cut it into smaller pieces. I love the idea of cleaning the teeth at the same time. (at least while Tommy has them). I read what you said about how much you feed. I would like to try that for Tommy for maybe a snack or for his +1, +3 feedings..
I hope that Champ is just fine today! :-D

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

Have you tried chicken hearts? You can usually get them from the butcher. Tess loves them, very good for the teeth and added taurine as well! :-D

When I make Tess's raw food I parboil the chicken (we use 2/3 boneless skinless thighs and 1/3 boneless skinless breasts), freeze it enough to make it easier to cut and chunk all of the meat. I add the TC Instincts supplement powder. I know grinding the bones and all is the best way, but before investing in the grinder I wanted to make sure that Tess would eat raw. She definitely does! Unfortunately raw is so low in carbs that Tess would plummet down, so she only gets it occasionally now. When I get her OTJ it will be her main food.

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

so you don't have to worry about food poisoning with them partially cooked? i'm asking because one fateful weekend my husband and i both had killer food poisoning, and it was from me partially cooking turkey legs, pulling them out of the oven because we had to go somewhere, and putting them back in to finish cooking when we got home. one of the most miserable 24 hours of my life - laying on the bathroom floor and the whole shebang. the doc said when i raised the temp by partially cooking them that allowed bacteria to multiply.

the great irony of it all was they tasted GREAT. we had them in burritos and were "wow, isn't this good?!? nom nom nom" yeah. right before pseudo death struck.

is it different because you're freezing them right away? why are you boiling them at all, why not just give them raw?

i hope you know i'm asking because i don't know, not because i'm criticizing.

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

Cats are much less susceptible than humans to food poisoning. When they hunt they will often not eat the entire prey at once. I think the parboiling is mainly to make us feel a little safer about it. It is done to kill any surface bacteria from sitting around at the butchers. It is very quick, only a few seconds, and doesn't raise the internal temp. If you worry, just cook it all the way.

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

Patty look what you started, we certainly don't mean to hijack your condo today, but i think a lot of us who are knew to this are really curious about this raw/par boiled chicken, how much to give, if cooking it all the way through would take out nutrients, if a kitty with higher bg readings should just get white meat to start and stay away from the dark because of the fat.. I wanna know more, "input stephanie, Input"

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

Patty: the parboiling just helps to kill any salmonella that might be on the outside of the chicken. Cats can handle the raw much better than we can and it's rare to hear of a cat get salmonella poisoning from feeding raw if the bean took precautions like Ann does. Glad to see Champ is down this morning....come on buddy!

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

The only reason I parboil it is because of me!! Champ actually likes it better raw so I'm thinking that's what I'm going to do from now on. Like Ann said, if you freeze raw chicken just a little, it does make it much easier to cut up. Even if there is bacteria in the chicken, it won't hurt the kitties. Their stomachs are iron clad for that kind of thing. Just DO NOT give them ground meat unless you have ground it yourself because you don't have any idea what's in it. I give Champ boneless, skinless chicken breast that I purchase for myself. I buy it in bulk when it's on sale for $1.99 or less a pound and then cut up a bunch for him and freeze the rest for myself!! When Dr. Lisa makes her own food, I notice that she uses chicken and turkey legs and thighs so I have to assume that's okay too. I don't like dark meat myself and so just never buy it, and I know the calorie count is more than the breast. I checked and it's 46 calories per ounce for chicken breast. Which is probably why Champ has been gaining weight since I've been giving him that for his snacks because I know it won't raise his BG, and I've been giving him like 3 oz a day!! I'm definitely cutting back! When he's hungry at +5 and I know I'm checking his BG at +6, I give him the chicken breast so the number will be accurate. And BTW, don't cut the chicken too small. They need to really have to chew it for it to be effective in cleaning their teeth.

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299

It sounds like Champ is going to get some pretty tasty food and snacks soon!! How does one parboil? Do you drop it into boiling water, or do you put it in cold water and bring to the boil? I tried to interest Rusty in some plain, cooked boiled chicken, but he wouldn't eat it.

Carry on!!

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299, +4.5 167

Ella, I put the chicken breasts in a really big skillet and add enough water to come about halfway up the chicken, turn it on to medium high, let it boil away, and turn it once to get the other side partially cooked. It is the UGLIEST chicken you've ever seen...pasty white. I wouldn't eat it if you paid me. But I do think I'm going to just give Champ raw chicken from now on. It has more of a smell and he seems to go for the raw stuff more. I think he likes the smell. I know the parboiled stuff doesn't have much of a smell at all, but the raw does...not a bad smell, just a little sumpin sumpin for the kitties hone in to.

And can I get a WOO HOO for the blue number?

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299, +4.5 167

WOO HOO for Patty and Champ!!!

I'm so happy for the very nice blue number today!!! :RAHCAT

And kitties sure do know how to tug on the old bean heartstrings when they are hungry, doing the little cry-meow. Every time you move they run into the kitchen thinking they are about to be fed.....but Leo has gotten smart and knows that my dad is a sucker and will feed him every time he asks to be fed, so he only ever bothers my dad. Me......it doesn't work so much on me when i take him home, I am all about trying to do a lil bit of weight loss for Leo lately.

Are you thinking about switching to a raw diet for Champ?

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299, +4.5 167

I'm definitely not going with a raw diet...I just don't have the time to devote to it. I need the "find the can on a shelf, open the can, put some in a dish" kind of routine.

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299, +4.5 167, +9.5 329

So much for the blue floor!!! Geez louise, nothing like leaving it in style, too! I saved the tuna water from when I made tuna salad the other day. No oil in it, just water. I gave him that as a "snack" today thinking it probably doesn't have any calories and will make him think he's eating yummy food. Could that affect his BGs? Or is he just reminding me that he can't stand being below the third floor?

Re: 5/3 Champ AMPS 299, +4.5 167, +9.5 329, PMPS 289

Excuse me, I'm trying to find the 'Feline Nutrition' class. Sure got a lot of good useable info today Patty. I feed Gus chicken breast that has been cooked in the oven, but after reading about benefits of raw, I'll go that way. He only gets it for a snack but he loves it. I wait for the buy 1, get 1 free sales. Champ looks like he's doing good today. Gus went and bounced on me, Oh well. Been there, done that. Have a good night.

Nice recovery back to yellow! Champ was just letting you know what he thinks about putting him on a diet.

When I par-boil chicken I have a big pot of boiling water and just drop it in for a few seconds, it's still raw in the middle.
