I'm using ketostix and getting a color that looks like a completely washed out version of Large Ketonges just like the color for the negative on the ketodiastix (bottom left of page swatch) here: http://petdiabetes.wikia.com/wiki/Ketoacidosis instead of negative or dark Large ketones on the Ketostix (across from it) which is what I'm using! Someone who has seen actual ketones on the ketostix, please tell me if it's supposed to be dark like the swatch on the ketostix when you have ketones??

Racci has no symptoms, is eating perfectly, drinking, is hydrated, peeing, pooping, playing, now that DGS has gone home. The only sign that any thing was wrong was a super high (for Racci lately) amps but since my 3 yo DGS was here running around for hours by then ssince I babysat today, she was stressed & she had a skinny dose last night since her bg was jumping up and down and she was low.

I know the negative is the real color of the swatches on the ketostix but if someone can tell me if the other colors for the moderate or large ketones on the strip are the same as the bottle shows them or close to it, it would really relieve my mind and let me sleep tonight. Racci has a vet appt in the morning.

PS: I'm using Relion Ultima which is about 15% higher than the Contour until my contour strips get here.

Ive the btl of Ketostix. The indicator on it reads that the negative keytone reading should be very light beige instead of dark purplish. The darker the color will indicate the more ketone found. So, if Ricci's colour is light washed out, he should be free of keytone. ? I cannot be sure, hope somebody with more experience can answer you. The testing strip reading must be read in a minute, cannot read the stix later than that or else the the colour will change & reading is not accurate.

The dark purple color is indicative of ketones. If what you are seeing is closer to flesh tone or pale pink, you're fine. The other way to figure this out is for you to pee on a Ketostix. If the color is pretty much the same as what Racci produced, you're good.

Also, make sure you're within the expiration date of the bottle and you've stored the container properly. Finally, follow the directions. The comparison to the key on the bottle should be made 15 sec. after urine is on the absorbent paper.

The expiration is good. It's a fairly new bottle and always showed negative before as the exact color on the bottle. That's why I'm so freaked out. I never thought of peeing on one myself! Duh How stupid of me! Thanks Sienne! I'll go do that. I was in a panic since I had used this bottle several times and always got the same negative and this one is different. I wonder if my DGS messed with it? Maybe opened the bottle to look at & dropped them? Maybe the hot weather? I hope she doesn't have ketones!!!! Could she have them with absolutely no symptoms at all?

My urine came back the right color for negative, so what should I think of Racci's? Would it be based on how light or dark her color is or what shade color it is?

Oops. The Ketostix only last 6 mos. once you open the bottle.

Also, I don't think you can do a %-correction to bring two meters closer together. The numbers just don't work that way. It's a much more complicated statistical process that's based on standard error of measurement and you would need a ton of data on several of the meters. The numbers are what they are on each meter.

I have several tests on my ss where I did both meters on the same blood drop. I know it's not a perfect way because the blood changes second by second but don't you think it would be better to do it with a percentage for a few days than have the confusion of a change that big? I'm about to do another test for pmps. What do you think? I'll go look at date of ketostix but I think they're new. I have another 1/2 full I had to throw out! I dated it! March10! PheW!

I think it's better to use what the meter tells you and note you're using a different meter.

I'm about to get ready for her meds and food so will be gone for a while but will be back.

I took another ketone test. It was better than before after several water bowl trips and syringes of water plus a couple of meals. Urine was also more dilute but color was still off, not the nice negative that matches but lighter than before and the same color as before, like the color of the large ketones only super duper light, like a wash of it, know what I mean? Yet she just woke & came over purring on my leg asking for food and drank more water, peed and was ready for company, certainly not acting sick! I don't understand this at all.

I saw your post with the ketone colors. It's worrisome.I'd get Racci in to see the vet. I'd rather the vet think you're a worry wort than you find out a few days from now that Racci's in DKA. I'd also suggest that you get blood tests to make sure there's no infection present. How are Racci's teeth?

This is getting me confused too :oops: it's the darker colour of the stix that indicate ketone in urine, right? The lighter the colour, the less ketone.

I'm also very confused as to what color you are getting. But if it isn't negative, I think you need to get her to the vet. If she is developing ketones, it can progress very quickly.

She has an appt with the vet for 11 am so I'm taking her in for sure. I just wish I knew more. I'll definitely ask for a blood test for infection. Since she's eating well and drinking do you think it's necessary to get any pancreatitis tests or anything else? I'm thinking that if she does have an infection, it would be from her anal glands or that other anal skin infection she had the last time. She keeps getting that back. Her teeth have always been great and still look very white with no visible problems. I brush them but her mom had great teeth too and it is hereditary.

Marje, this last test was about as light as the negative on the ketostix. It just was a different shade. It isn't pinkish it's more brownish than the regular negative though just as light. It's confusing. I'm going to try and get another one tonight and see if that looks normal but even if it does, she's still going to see the vet. I've never seen anything but negative but assumed I'd be able to tell what it was if it wasn't negative.? That's why I figured if someone else had seen it they could tell me if it was the same color as the chart on the bottle.

Get Racci tested for a UTI. She may have blood in her urine. That would cause the strip to be brownish. You can also try putting a paper towel under her rear when she pees. If her urine has a red - brown color, she has blood in her urine.
