5/29 Eyes on Mr Grey's progress is 1u "his dose" ?

Hello please check his ss. Seems like 1u is the dose that's keeping him regulated. We got as low as .75u but ended up reverting to 1u. I know it's the Nadir that counts the most for dose amount. Is it ok for a cat to be in the 120's BID and 80-90's after shot ? If so then do I continue to stay with 1u unless he starts testing too low and then lower the dose accordingly ?
 
The quick answer to your question is, "Yes." Having Mr. Grey in the 120 range at pre-shot and nadirs mid- to -upper greens is fine.

That said, it all depends on what your goals are. If you are wanting to keep him tightly regulated, this is a perfect scenario. He's in normal numbers. You have the latitude to go up even a bit higher but ideally, keeping him in a normal range is good for him. As long as he's below renal threshold (200 - 220 -- it varies depending on the cat) there limited risk for organ damage.

If you are hoping for remission, then you will need to increase the dose. The challenging piece here is not knowing whether Mr. G. is an acro kitty. I'm personally leaning toward his being insulin resistant and that you've broken the resistance. When this happens, the cat is pretty much like any diabetic cat and you can follow the TR protocol. If he's acro, you need to be cognizant of whether growth hormone levels are rising and adjust doses in accord with what the hormone is doing.
 
So everyone knows, I found a new vet and was a day away from getting Me Grey's blood test for Acro done and then my Mom was hospitalized where she is now. This weekend she will have open heart surgery. Thanks Sienne for your reply today. I will tend to getting Grey tested eventually as for now it's all about my mother.
 
Thanks Liz yea that Mr Grey is doing great ! And thanks for your kind words and support for my Mother. She is fortunate to have one of the best surgeons for the job and be surrounded by so much love from family and friends. Surgery is set for tomorrow Friday afternoon at the hospital in NYC.

Sending prayers all goes perfectly with your mom. I've been lurking on Mr. Grey's progress for a while now, and it's been wonderful to see his breakthrough. You're doing such a terrific job!
 
Glad our info is out there to help others. Mr. Grey seems to be a unique case. Update on my Mom. She is doing AMAZING after her double bypass, Aortic heart valve replacement, and aortic aneurism repair. 3 days post surgery and walking with a physical therapist already/ :smile:
 
I'm glad to hear your mom's surgery went well and she's is recovering very nicely. :YMHUG:

Great news to hear that you Mom did well with surgery and is on the road to recovery now with lots of family support.

When you do have Mr. Grey tested for acro, please ask the vet to give a listen to his heart..... it is being found that many acros have heart issues, and it considered a silent killer. If the IGF-1 test is positive, you should consider having Mr. Grey's heart checked next.

Last point, acros can be in the numbers that Mr. Grey is getting without insulin.... I stopped Oliver's shots at 3u, and so did another acro owner. If you wanted, you could try to test him but stopping his shots... acros are very good at managing the insulin, even if not needed it seems.
Just a thought if you wanted to start a trial, but remember, an acro is always an acro, and may need insulin later on so testing should be continued even if not daily.

Hi Gayle, take a look at Mr G's ss, I have started the OTJ test going on 6 cycles and he is managing quite well it seems. Mom is in a rehab program to regain some strength and doing very well so the family is getting back to a somewhat normal but wishing she were home. I will get the acro test soon. Thanks for the advice :smile:
 
so far, so good. :smile: His numbers look about the same as they did on insulin. The next couple of days will probably be telling, once his Lantus depot is fully depleted. It would be nice to see more green, but he wasn't seeing a lot of green even with the insulin so this might be a comfy range for him. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

As much as possible, you can probably help him out by continuing to feed small meals throughout the day. It should help him keep his numbers flat (which he is doing very well!).
