He IS back on Friskies ( SD for the most part) I took him off that out of concern over the possibility of it lowering his potassium. But when I changed his diet, his renal values spiked - so I put him back on Friskies again and now they are back down. He's picky, I wish he would just eat Wellness but I'm struggling to find another food that will work for him.

You know these two things may not be at all related, right? The renal values and the Friskies? Did we already discuss magnesium? If his food is low in magnesium, he may not be able to keep up his potassium.

okay... I just did some reading on magnesium/potassium --- I see your point Jess - and Thank You.
And yes I do understand that the renal value changes may not be related to diet . I've just been not sure what to do... and I've been being rather reactive.
So at the risk of seeming to continue being reactive ;-) I will stop feeding Friskies SD (again) as of today.
I think I'll do what Choy-Foong suggested and try a med phos food - one that is NOT low in magnesium.
That makes sense to me and since we will be continueing to monitor him we'll be able to add a phos binder if it's needed.

oooooh, it's good to have a plan! So how do you find a food that balances all those things? (I know what I would do - don't try to figure it out myself, just ask CF!)

lol! that IS usually the best way Libby...
Fortunately for CF though, Doodle has already narrowed down the selection by only agreeing to eat a few flavours of what I consider med phos... so he will be eating Friskies Turkey and Giblets again and I'll keep trying to sneak in some Merrick and Wellness.


3ps = 140 -- and he seems to be feeling much better today
