Georgia and Simon (GA)

AMPS is high due to Simon getting MC food last night. He is not wanting to eat much of his regular food so I am giving him things he normally would not eat. More important that he eats! Yesterday, I talked with vet and found out that instead of 5 days on Clavamox, he needs to stay on it for 10 days! I am really depressed because I thought today was his last day on the AB. The vet suggested Convenia, but with Simon's very unstable health right now, I do not even want to go there. I know Convenia is better on the tummy, but if he has a reaction, there is no way to reverse it.

I am picking up the prednisolone this morning and will give Simon his first dose this evening. I really hope it stimulates his appetite. I will adjust insulin once I see what the pattern is going to be when he has been on the pred for a few days and also to se if he tolerates it well.

Overall, Simon is being a real trooper. He still likes to snuggle and even wanted to go outside yesterday and make sure there was no predators on the front lawn! He is my little snuggle bug.

I agree that eating is the main thing. Give him what he will eat. Poor guy. I hope the pred helps his appy. Tarragon takes 5 mg daily and has never had appy issues. Ugh on the Clavamox. That stuff really messes with T's tummy too. I'm so glad he is still wanting to go outside and snuggle. ((((Georgia))))

Morning Georgia :coffee::coffee::coffee:

I concur: eating is impt. When Mannie went through this and didn't feel well, it was MC/HC most of the time, it was what he would eat. Appy vines for Simon, I hope the pred helps. Kudos to you Simon.

Have a good day Georgia. I hope all goes well.

I absolutely agree, too...eating is top priority, no matter what fuds it is! I don't blame you for being depressed about the clavamox...such a bummer (I went through something similar with my Dad this spring when he had pneumonia - I know the AB was making the situation worse, and the doc just kept adding more days to it. It was awful.), but hopefully the extra 5 days will really kick that UTI completely out of his system. Aside from possible reactions to convenia, it really isn't the right AB choice for the job anyway.

I'm so glad he's snuggling and doing "Simon" things, though. Prayers and feel better vines continue from us!

I agree that convenia isn't the right antibiotic for a UTI and also that you can't risk the potential side effects should it not agree with him. Good call on your part. I do agree with your vet that he needs at least the 10 days of the antibiotic. UTIs can be hard to get rid of and need at least the 10 days if severe. My mom has them almost continually now and it's awful. If not knocked out completely he will become resistant to the drugs making it harder to treat in the future. :bighug:

Zener's Lantus dose went from about 1.5u to 2.5u when he started prednisolone. I'm recalling that it definitely helped with appetite. Many vines for you and for Simon.
Liz
