I haven't been posting or testing as often as usual the past two days, but I've certainly noticed a huge change in Gus' #s. He's got a vet app't on Tues. afternoon. He started chewing on one side and pawing at the other yesterday. I'm putting my money on a dry socket, abcess, something of that nature. His rise in numbers directly cooresponds to the pawing at the surgical side of his face (same actions as pre-extraction). Up until then, he had his old spark and was starting to play with his old toys. He is showing no signs of distress but he didn't before his extraction, either. Evidently, he is very stoic. I'd appreciate any advice on how to handle him in the next few days, until his appt.

poor little guy. are you feeling better, bev?

are you adding water to his food? that might make it easier to chew. i'm not sure what else to suggest - i guess i'd call the vet, but here it is saturday and of course monday is a holiday.

perhaps someone else will have an idea.

have you gotten any test results back yet?

Is a cefuroxine based AB safe for cats? My DH is a pediatrician who thinks is would appropriate for Gus in a wt. based pediatric dosage. Is anyone familiar with vet meds containing ceftin?

Julie, I was so preoccupied with his new problem that I forgot to ask when I had them on the phone. I would take him to an emergency vet if he had a fever but he doesn't. I've got another ? out there about meds, hopefully I'll get info. What was Punkin on when he had his AB?

Re: 5/28 Gus AMPS HI/R.5/+1R=HI/+2R=596

Bev,
I know he isn't running a fever, but I would take him to the ER vet if you can't get him in to his regular vet. I don't know anything about ceftin based AB in vet use, not sure if that's appropriate or not. It sounds like he is in quite a bit of pain, so waiting until Tuesday is not an option, IMHO. The ER vet would be the best choice...he could also give him bupe for pain. Without an exam, it's hard to tell what the problem is, so just giving AB may not be the best course.

Re: 5/28 Gus AMPS HI/R.5/+1R=HI/+2R=596

Bev:

When Gus had his dental, did the vet do post-procedure x-rays? It's possible that there is a tooth fragment remaining which is causing the problem.

FYI: The cephalosporins can cause false positive BG readings. One site indicated this was only on urine BG strips. Another site did not specify. I think I've seen Cefa-drops used only once in recent memory.

I really think you need to get this sorted out with a vet. He probably needs to get an x-ray if one wasn't done, an AB, and probably some bupe.

Re: 5/28 Gus AMPS HI/R.5/+1R=HI/+2R=596

the antibiotic that worked was cyclosporin - the ones that didn't work were clavamox (intestinal/vomiting distress) and baytril. the cyclosporin is the one that works on body cavity anaerobic bacteria - my daughter was given it this week for a bad pilonidal cyst.

bupe is great for pain. the cerenia was great for nausea if you have that issue too.

I just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you and Gus. I'm hoping for a quick resolution to this. It has to be so hard on you. (((hugs)))

Re: 5/28 Gus PMPS HI

We're home from the ER. Gus had an infected suture at the extraction site. The vet used a topical numbing creme and removed the suture. He irrigated the area and sent us home with a script of Clindamycin. Next step, get better and back to his lower #s. Julie, I do mix water with Gus' food. I read in someone else's post that it was a good method of getting extra fluids into a cat. It also has been easier for Gus to eat since his dental. Thanks for the tip though. And thanks for the advice not to treatr at home, but rather go to the ER. It's just that I hate it there and would go out of my way to avoid it.

Re: 5/28 Gus PMPS HI

I don't blame you for hating a trip to the ER. I couldn't agree more. The big however is that an ER vet saved Gabby's life after she ate dental floss. I suspect you would have had a major problem on your hands if the infected suture hadn't been taken care of. I'm glad it all worked out.

Re: 5/28 Gus PMPS HI

Awww Bev i'm sorry Gus isn't feeling well. Good to hear you found out what the problem is, poor lil fella.

Get better Gus ((((((HUGS TO YOU BOTH)))))

Re: 5/28 Gus PMPS HI

did they also give you fortiflora to go with the clindamycin? i forgot to mention that. clindamycin is a great cause of diarrhea - i've been giving punkin fortiflora every day he's been on the AB and it does really make a difference.

glad you found out the cause and got it resolved. make sure they recheck the site when the AB is up - punkin was on 20 days of the clindamycin and i think more than 10 days is the norm. i looked it up online and that was recommended, so i was happy the vet suggested it. punkin was off and then is now back on again because it's still red - his problem is the tooth on top is hitting the extraction site and annoying it. is that a possibility with gus?

Re: 5/28 Gus PMPS HI

Dental floss?! That's one on me. I had a cat who got into someone's garbage and ate the string that runs around the outside of a roast beef. That little snack cost a few dollars, as I recall. I'm glad Gus got treated and he's, once again, on the road to recovery.

Re: 5/28 Gus PMPS HI

poor Gus, I'm glad you got that suture taken care of so he can get back to his nice numbers. (((((Bev))))) I understand hating the ER, I hate them too but they are there for a reason.

Re: 5/28 Gus PMPS HI

I'm glad to see your back from the ER.. and that Gus is once again on the road to recovery.. Poor baby must have been hurting pretty bad.. You did good Bev.. I hope that you and Gus can get some sleep tonight. You've had a couple of pretty rough days again. I'm just happy he's going to be ok! :-D

Re: 5/28 Gus PMPS HI

Oh my.... I'm offline today and look what I missed! Poor Gus! Gosh that must have hurt. I know how you feel about ER's, mee too, but it seems that it was a good call today. I hope he feels better soon. Good job - good observation.

I hope you guys have a nice rest of the weekend.

Re: 5/28 Gus PMPS HI

Once again, thanks to the folks who really know what to do in any given situation. And thanks to all our friends for always being there for us with a good word. I wish that from now on, Gus and I can give good thoughts, support, and encouragement for others instead of needing all the time. Have a good night all.

Bev: sorry I missed this today but you got awesome advice. I'm so glad you took him to the ER. Hopefully his numbers will come down now.

I had a conversation with my vet about clavamox vs clindamycin. She said that clavamox has amoxicillin which is an anaerobic oriented AB; however, it is more for situations like my Teddi Bear has where there does not appear to be bone involvement. She said for bone involvement, extractions, etc. that clindamycin is a better choice because it is designed for anaerobic bacteria. However, it does upset the tummy alot more.

Good luck and I hope he feels better soon.
