Yesterday's Condo

I confess, I have no idea what is going on with Cinco right now. He is eating well and acting like he feels good - even a little playful, but his numbers are trending up??? Just when I start thinking he needs a dosecrease, he throws in a green number, just to confuse me further. I really don't know what to make of it.

Today is his follow-up appointment with the Ophthalmologist. I'm hoping he'll find that the herpes infection in his eye is gone, and maybe we can cut back a little on all the drops. Seven a day is an awful lot - at least, in Cinco's opinion! The eye looks good to me, but what do I know?

Sasha is still sneezing like crazy. I called the vet this morning and she told me I could give a higher dose of antihistamine, and give it three times a day instead of two. We talked about putting her back on Pred, and she wanted to check with the Oncologists first. She called them and they said it was okay, so I'm giving her 2.5 mg of Pred today and tomorrow, and then every other day for a several days. After our first conversation, I went up and tried to give Sasha some Zyrtec. She fought like crazy. I put her in the sack, and she still fought, even accidentally bit me once! (didn't break the skin) While we were wrestling, my cell rang- of course I'd left it downstairs! When I finally got the capsule down her and let her out of the sack, I went down and checked the phone and it was the vet calling to say go ahead with the pred! So I had to go back up and sack her again. She wasn't happy, but I think I wore her out, because it took less time to get it in her than before. I am always so scared I'm going to hurt her - especially now- because she struggles and cries so much. She's a strong little bugger. The good thing is that she's very forgiving and does not hold a grudge afterward. I wish she'd go back to liking the pill pockets, but I think she must have bit into a capsule or something and now she wants nothing to do with them.

Sending healing vines to all in need, and hugs to all their beans. :YMHUG: Thoughts and prayers to Kelly as she mourns her Oliver, and extra hugs to Lyresa, who has had a heck of a time the past few weeks. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Tricia,

Its so hard when you have multiple cats that need medicines. I had a diabetic cat, one that had high blood pressure and constipation and a very sick elderly mother all at the same time.
Its also hard when you have to pill a cat that hates it and is hard to pill, I had several of those as well.
I hope Cinco`e eye infection has cleared up and maybe you won`t have to give him so many eye drops. You sure do have your hands full. Sending prayers for your kitties Sasha and Cinco.

Terri

Sending good OV vetty vines for today for Cinco. I hope you get the all clear to reduce his medications. If he continues to give you just those quick lagoon toe dips, you might have room to fatten his dose up a bit.

More vines coming out for Sasha. You must be quite the expert at the sack now. Have you tried a different flavor of pill pocket to see if she'll take that? Sometimes they associated aversions with flavors. I like Mariko's solution of rolling pills in a bit of a raw meat nugget too.

Paws crossed for a good vetty visit. Since Sasha isn't diabetic, she can eat the other pill pocket flavors.

Hi Tricia,

You have your hands full today - I hope all goes well at the ophthalmologist (didn't know they had them for animals). Good luck flattening out Cinco's numbers.

Too bad there isn't an easier way to give pills - I hate using the plunger on Pixie and he doesn't struggle too much. Let's hope your day is better than your morning, Tricia. Thinking about you, Anne.

Cinco just wants to make sure you stay on your toes!

Good luck at the vettie bean's.

Re: 5/28 Cinco AMPS 250 +3.5 209 +6 164 OV appt today

Thanks for stopping by, Deb, Ann, Wendy, Liz and Terri.

Just grabbing a bite between errands, then it's time to shove Cinco in the carrier and go! He really hates it - tries to get out the whole 30 minute drive! And howls.

I have all the flavors of pill pockets, and Sasha has rejected them all now. She used to like them all, even the duck, but no longer. I have not tried the raw meat. She's never had raw meat, so I don't know how she would react to it. What kind would I use? I don't eat fish, so that's out. I tried cheese once - just some American like you put on burgers. No sale.

Microwave's beeping - lunch is ready! :-D I'll post again when we get back.

Re: 5/28 Cinco AMPS 250 +3.5 209 +6 164 OV appt today

I hope Cinco's appointment goes well today and he won't need as many drops. I have one kitty who screams at the top of her lungs any time she's in the car. I have to wear ear plugs when I take her to the vet.

I hope the pred helps Sasha's sneezing. I hate it when the one that needs the pill won't eat the pill pocket.

Hi Tricia and handsome Sir Cinco!

I haven't had a chance to catch up on your condos yet - glad to hear Cinco's feeling better. Good luck with the OV today. Bummer that Sasha doesn't like the pill pockets but I have one that I think did the same thing - won't touch them now with a 10 foot pole other than try to bury them.

THANKS for the hugs! GLADLY accepted...and back to you! :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 5/28 Cinco AMPS 250 +3.5 209 +6 164 Back from OV

Thanks, Carla and Lyresa.

Good news and bad news (sort of) from the Ophthalmologist: The good news is that the pressure in Cinco's eye is perfect and the herpes infection, while not completely gone, is much improved. :-D The bad news is we have to continue all the drops, same dosage. Next check up in six weeks. Really, it's not that bad, just a pain for both of us, but he is much easier to treat than Sasha, by a long shot!

He complained and banged on the door of the carrier all the way to and from the vet. He also peed in it on the way there. I had the foresight to double up on pee pads, so when I took him out at the vets, I disposed of those two and pulled out the two I had stashed in my purse and replaced them! Viola! Clean carrier for the trip home. Apparently he emptied his bladder the first time around, as all was dry when we got home. He's pouting in the living room now, so I'm seizing the opportunity to vacuum the family room carpet and the sofa he hangs out on. After his lb visit this morning he apparently didn't do a very good job of cleaning himself off, as the sofa is soiled, so I will need to mix up a cleaning solution and get that taken care of, too. When it dries I plan to put a washable cover on the sofa so we don't have this problem again. I'm still happy to have him hang with us in the family room, so I'll make accommodations as needed!

I haven't been around Sasha much today, but I did hear her sneezing just now when I was up there to check on her. She didn't sound as snuffly, though. I'll just have to see how she is later tonight. I don't know that one Pred would make a huge difference. Hopefully she'll be better tomorrow and we can skip getting the AB.

Re: 5/28 Cinco AMPS 250 +3.5 209 +6 164 Back from OV

I'm glad things are better for Cinco's eye. Sorry you still have to give the same number of eye drops. Maybe next time you'll be able to quit giving some of the drops.

Re: 5/28 Cinco PMPS 112

This has been the strangest 24 hours, BG wise. DH and I are wondering if last night's shot was a miss, although neither of us smelled any Lantus. It shouldn't be a bounce from a 93, should it? Whatever it was, I'm glad Cinco's coming down, although that PMPS surprises me for sure. I'm waiting with bated breath to see where he is at +2!

Re: 5/28 Cinco AMPS 250 +3.5 209 +6 164 Back from OV

Hey Tricia....

We had a lot of trouble with giving Jupiter pills too. But, we did learn many many tricks!

Just figured I would give you a few ideas if you'd like to try any.

-Take a very small piece of pill pocket, just enough to cover the pill. Wrap around the pill. Roll the pill in forti flora.
-Crush up some favorite treats and do the step above but instead of forti flora, roll the pill pocket in the treats.
-Jupiter loved when we rolled the pill pocket in some tuna flakes! (for all 3 steps above, if the treats dont stick well enough to the pill pocket just lightly roll the pill pocket in the food you regularly feed, or you can even use some tuna juice to add a little flavor (I used the juice from fancy feast appetizers)
-Depending on the size of the pill, (for Jupiters small pills - I did this) We use the tender tongol tuna fancy feast appetizer... it has some chunks of tuna in it... we would stick the pill inside and give him the chunk of tuna. (For some weird reason Jupe loves bread... so we had to use this method once too)
-If your kitty will eat lunchmeat or cheese, you could also try wrapping the pill in that
-If the pill has a very strong taste or odor, it might be why the kitty is being so resistant. An idea to try, is getting gelatin capsules and putting the pill inside that before you put it in the pill pocket. The gelatin capsules come in different sizes and great if you have to give multiple pills as long as theyre not too big, and wont melt in the cats mouth right away, and they dont have a bad taste like some pills do. Jupiter was very resistant to some medicines, and the vets thought it was because those specific ones had a bad taste or odor...so gelatin capsules were recommended. We never ended up trying them, but I read reviews that they work well.
-Also, if the pills are very large, and Jupiter had to bite to swallow, he would taste the pill inside of the pill pocket, and then immediately spit it out. So we found it much easier if we broke the pill in half (ask your vet if this would be okay first) and we break the pill pocket in half and put each in a half of pill pocket. Since it was smaller, he didnt have to chew it as much and taste as much and wouldnt normally spit it out this way.

I cant think of any thing else right now but if I think of something I will post it, and of course I hope others give ideas too. Most importantly I hope one of these ideas help!!!

edited to add:
maybe rolling the pill pocket in catnip? Im not sure if this could work or not... just an idea...
Jupiter always loved grass.... so I wrapped his in grass before... so gave me the catnip idea but no idea if it would work.. one of my cats loves to eat catnip.... but the others play with it... so not sure if she would swat at a pillpocket rolled in catnip or eat it...

I also forgot to add... its best to try 'some' of these ideas without the pill in it first. if she stopped liking pill pockets because she kept tasting the pills in them, if you try rolling them in the treats, try without a pill incase she refuses to eat it... so you dont waste the pills? or if you try to see if she likes some lunchmeat or cheese, or a chunk of tuna... see if she likes these things without the pills first maybe?

Re: 5/28 Cinco PMPS 112

Tricia! You have to go read China's condo!

I said almost the exact same thing about this morning's shot...These two are in cahoots!!

Sorry to hear you have to keep up with the same number of eyedrops, but best to get it cleared up really well once and hopefully never have to do it again!

Hope the pred works it's usual magic for Sasha too!

Re: 5/28 Cinco PMPS 112 +2 99

Chris, there is no doubt those two have been talking behind our backs. How else do you explain these numbers?

I got the family room vacuumed and cleaned the spots on the sofa. After his shot and partial dinner, Cinco jumped up on the sofa, and it was almost comical to see his reaction when he found his favorite spots were wet! :o  I tried to get him to hang out on the back of the sofa, one of his favorite spots, but he wanted down! He finished his dinner on the floor.

Cinco was wandering around, meowing, at about +2 so I checked him, thinking he'd gone low after that PMPS, and he'd only dropped 3 points! I don't know what his issue was, but it wasn't a low BG.

Jamie, thanks so much for the ideas. As it happens, I've tried a lot of those. I've been doing gelcaps for some time - I even bought a machine to fill them so I could get Allerplex into Sasha (she doesn't like it mixed in her food). They work great -when you can actually get them into the cat! Pill pocket rolled in Forti Flora - check. Pill pocket cut down and covered in food - check. Gelcap or pill wrapped in cheese - check. Pills cut in half -check. Sasha does not like tuna flakes. I have not yet tried hiding it in raw meat, but I'm not sure she'd like that.

Sasha was still sneezing when it came time for her next dose of Zyrtec. I put her in the sack and got the pill into her with minimal fuss for once - I think she was worn out.

Re: 5/28 Cinco PMPS 112

Tricia

I'm sorry you have to continue with the meds but the rest of the news is fantastic! Yay!!!

IMHO, I'd fatten the dose and see how he does. He might just need a little nudge. Think about dosing for the nadir you want. If you want the nadirs to come down a bit, then fatten. And vice versa.

Sasha sounds like such a sweet girl. Prayers for her.

Thanks, Marje. Ordinarily, I would do as you suggest, but because Cinco will be boarding this weekend, I'm not going to up his dose now. I just have to decide if I want them to shoot the 1.5 we're doing now or 1.0 to keep him safe. After that experience we had in March when they shot a 53 and didn't test, I'm a little leery of having them shoot too much. Any advice would be appreciated. I'll try to remember to post that question in my condo tomorrow. Tonight he had a lovely surf - just what I'd like to see every day!
