Ok, no post yesterday. Sorry. When I bought new foods on Sunday, most of them were Merrick, which Chris informed me that there is a discussion saying that some may be higher carb than acceptable... which is a bummer, because that is the brand that they had the most of... and they seemed to like them. They only had a couple of acceptable Weruva, but I'm not going to lie, I thought them to look & smell pretty disgusting. They liked it at first, but did not finish either of the two types that I bought. Sadly for me and my situation, the only other foods that I have access to locally are FF and Friskies...

So, I don't know what to do. I have to buy more food at noon because I am out. I would like to try the Fancy Feast again, but Tyler has pretty much turned his nose up to everything that he was eating on the days that he was vomiting (including the Pet Natural's UT health treats). The Merrick and Weruva are so far outside of my budget it isn't even funny. So any ideas on what I should do as far as feeding goes? I have to go to the pet store at lunch and if I don't hear back, I might get Merrick again, just for now, because he is eating it.

Morning Brian ~O) ~O) ~O)

I don't kn ow how much help I can be as it has been a while since I have had to feed an FD kitty.... Mannie's main foods were Wellness Chicken, Turkey, both 4% LC foods. We also used Merrick Surf n Turf and Cowboy Cookout, 3% and 5% respectively. I too have read that Merrick has changed their formula, and those foods are now a higher carb count that what I used. The surf and turf may however be the same??? I also fed FF classics, and on occasion Friskies. The Merrick is, as you say, expensive. Weruva was a hit and miss fr Mannie. Some days it was food. others he would not eat it. There is a new one out there: Wild Callings, that I read here people are finding that their kitties like. I have no clue on pricing and now available it really is. Pro Plan has a couple of chicken ones, and a chicken and liver one that is also low in carbs (5%, 2%) that Mannie also really liked.

Good luck!

Hi guys .. so close to yellow tyler! We used to feed mocha walmarts brand special kitty, turkey and giblets .. you got a 5.5oz can here for .47 .. It was what she was eating when she went OTJ and continued to eat for the last three years, I think it was 4% .. Then about a month ago wal mart stopped carrying that particular flavor so we switched her over to friskies special diet turkey and giblets .. I think that one is 5% but she is holding steady on it numberwise .. I hope that helps .. have a great day!

Re: 5/27 Tyler AMPS 303 - Merrick Foods .......

THE TWO THAT WERE UPDATED:

the new Merrick foods aren't as good as they were.....
Merrick Cowboy Cookout is 18-19% carbs phosphorus 294
Merrick Surf n Turf is 4.9% carb Phosphorus is 638. ( yikes)

here's a shortcut list easy to print and carry.

The purina one might be easy to find.... our Kroger's carrys it....
they also have nine lives, besides carrying fancy feast and friskies....

Shadow has always been a friskies girl so it's hard for me to get her to eat the better foods....

Hi Brian and Tyler!! Nice to meet you.

Look for Hound & Gatos or Evo 95. Both are on Dr. Lisa's chart, so you can check out the different flavors. I know that the chicken/turkey varieties we get are only 2% carb. http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf

Billie also loves Merrick, but we ran into the same problem with the carbs and went through a buffet of different options from the pet store before finding that she likes Evo 95 and Hound & Gatos - especially Hound & Gatos. H & G is harder to find, but if you have a pet store that carries Merrick and Weruva, they might have it. We have an awesome store here called Benson's but it might just be a local chain.

Billie was having some way-too-fast drops at the beginning of her cycle, so I'm still feeding Merrick Turducken (9%) at the beginning of her cycle because it slows down her descent.

Let us know what you find! I am always on the lookout for more food choices!

Re: 5/27 Tyler AMPS 303 - Merrick Foods .......

Hi Brian, I'm really glad you're having this discussion about Merrick foods. I wasn't aware of all this information and this is the only food I've found that Pixie will eat. Right now Pixie is eating Merrick Perfect Bistro Salmon and sometimes chicken. When I read the information, I realized that the salmon has a very high level of phosphorus which is bad for a cat with kidney disease. This probably explains why Pixie is still peeing large puddles. I couldn't really understand why everything else was falling into place - decreased blood glucose levels, decreased thirst but not decreased peeing. I think I'll try the turkey today and see if he'll go for it. I hope you're able to find something that is affordable and works for Tyler. Thanks for having this discussion, Brian. Have a great day. Anne

Well thank you for that, Rhiannon! I saw that they were talking about those foods in particular, but wasn't sure about all the others. He is a little higher than normal right now. But in order to get him to eat anything I've had to put HC treats on his foods. So the list you posted is more updated than the one I had, and I will use it to my advantage. I saw the purina proplan at the store, but they only had two varieties, and neither were on the list. I will keep trying until I find what I am looking for.

Julie has asked if I have tried Parmesan or Oregano, and I have not yet. I work at the pizza shop tonight so, I will snag some to see if that helps.

Re: 5/27 Tyler AMPS 303 - Merrick Foods .......

There are several Friskies varieties that are low carb and low in price.

One other consideration -- if you buy a 15 oz can of Wellness, it ends up being cheaper than Fancy Feast if you price it out per ounce. You can buy a premium food in the biggest possible can and end up paying less but you'll need to do the math.

Re: 5/27 Tyler AMPS 303 - Merrick Foods .......

I'm sorry, I can't help with the food either. I was buying the Merrick and Weruva, but stopped when Spot was dx'd with the beginning of kidney disease. He now eats Friskies Special Diet flavors.

Re: 5/27 Tyler AMPS 303 - Merrick Foods .......

There are several Purina One, ProPlan and 9 Lives that low carb and more affordable than the Merrick foods, as well as Best Feline Friends (made by Weruva) that are really good quality, but cheaper than the Weruva brands (but they do all contain fish)

Welcome to the world of "What will they eat this time that I can actually afford to buy"...it's kind of the never-ending saga around here!

Thanks Sienne! I don't think they had any of the approved Wellness foods. The store I go to is a local shop and is pretty much my only option for the ritzy options, they can order whatever but I don't want to put a case of something on order and they turn out to not eat it... There is a Pet Smart here but it is on the other side of the bridge and I will have to go on a weekend day to see what they have.

For now, I saw that other Merrick flavors were still "ok" on the list, so I bought a enough Merrkick: Turducken, and Grammy's Pot Pie to last two days since they seemed to eat that ok. I saw that 9 lives in on the newer list. Anyone here have any luck with that? Due to it being cheaper, I may have to start using that until I can figure something else out.

Is that a drop to    ? I think you just changed a reply post subject not the first one. Well; Done, Tyler! give that boy his green smiley!

Petsmart carries Wellness, but at least ours does not have the large cans, just the 3oz and the 5.5oz. You want the grain free pate varieties, not the fancy stuff. They have a yellow triangle on the label. Once you find something they will eat you can order it online and usually get free delivery if you spend over $49. Chewy.com has the best price I've found for the 12.5oz cans, less than $2 a can.

Petsmart Also has the Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets, usually less than 50 cents a can.

Also since you are a student, if you still have access to your school email acct, you can sign up for Amazon Student. Free for 6 months, you get free 2 day shipping on any Amazon Prime item! Wellness is a couple of dollars more per case there, but you don't have a minimum for the free shipping. After 6 months you have to pay half the Amazon Prime rate and unless you respond to their notice they automatically re-up you. BTW, once you are signed up if you log on through the "shopping" link at the top of the forum, FDMB gets a commission from Amazon, no cost to you.

Thanks, ladies!

I am actually already a member of Amazon Prime Student already! :-D

but I will check out some other foods on Thursday. I have enough to last me until then and I work both jobs tonight and tomorrow. @-) @-) @-)

Ok, well I'm off to the night job! Thank you all for you help today! You all are awesome as usual!

i'm thinking i was luckier than i realized - punkin ate fancy feast's classic chicken, turkey & giblets and beef until his kidney's started to have trouble. then i went to low phosphorus & low carb - and the one i could find here that he liked and i could afford (he was a very expensive little guy with his acro) was Friskies special diet Turkey and Giblets.

i did buy a Merrick's beef that was both lc and low phos, but he didn't really like it. i thought it was probably better quality, so i kept giving it to him but he vastly preferred the Friskies. I found the Special Diet T & G at Kmart's. Who knew Kmart even carried at food?!
