I checked in with Leda's vet today (about fleas, but we also talked about his BG) and he's happy with the current dose (and with my decision to reduce it when Leda dropped below 50--thanks to the good advice of knowledgeable folks on this forum!). In talking about Leda's bouncing BG he mentioned that some of the cats he's treated have gone into remission, which was wonderful to hear.

Leda definitely objects to not having food in his bowl at 3am (PM +8 on our current schedule) and 5am (PM +10), so he got fed a little each time.

You might want to invest in one of the PetSafe5 auto feeders. Lots of people here use them since you can program them to open when you want overnight and then program an "empty" part to be open for the last 2 hours before shot time (so there's no food available for those 2 hours before shots)

Good timing--we just got one of those, and surprisingly he'll eat out of it, but I was still trying to figure out the best schedule for it. I'm guessing I'll want it to provide those 3 am and 5 am meals for sure though ;-)

I'd try to make them very small, like just a teaspoon or so, in order to not push up his preshot numbers. Anything after the middle of the cycle has the potential to cause the insulin to poop out before the next shot takes hold, which is the reason most people don't feed much after the nadir. However, cats can be different about this, so take good notes and see if it raises Leda's BGs to eat later in the cycle or not. Some kitties will graze around the clock and have it not particularly raise their blood sugar. It's likely the volume eaten is going to make a difference.

Great cycle today! The longer he spends in green numbers, the better. One little trick - next time you see him hit green, try giving him a couple of teaspoons of his regular low carb. That can help a kitty "surf" along in green without dipping too low.

I think last night's pm cycle was still part of the bounce from the green numbers the night before. When cats bounce, their blood sugar isn't necessarily a straight 400-400-400. It can wobble around high, but the way you know the bounce has cleared is that it lands somewhere about in the range that set off the previous bounce. Or it might be higher if the dose was reduced, but it's *usually* in the vicinity of the original range.

It's time for his evening shot, but he's asleep on my lap, and his BG is 105. So I'm going to wait a little and see if he wakes up and wants to eat and get his dose soon.
