Today is the fourth anniversary of Gabby being OTJ – ON the juice! In many ways and, like many of the kitties here, it is nothing short of a miracle that Gabby survived the first days of her diagnosis.

Shortly before Gabby was diagnosed, Gizmo joined the family. If you think he is irrepressible now, Gizmo as a 4 month old was even more energized. It was hard to tell how much of Gabby’s behavior was due to Gizmo being, well, Gizmo. In retrospect, her hiding was probably due to the FD and not Gizmo being a pest. I began to notice an acetone/alcohol smell on her breath over Memorial Day.

That Tuesday, we were at the vet’s office bright and early. Gabby’s BG was elevated, she was lethargic, throwing ketones, dehydrated – in other words, a very sick kitty. My vet told me she had DKA, they wanted to stabilize her in the office and then I would need to transport her to a local 24 hour ER/ICU. Both my vet and the vet at the ER gently mentioned that not all cats survive DKA.

I was calling the ER every 6 hours for reports on Gabby’s labs. Overnight, her electrolytes had stabilized and were beginning to return to normal values. In the meantime, they did a thorough work-up and further diagnosed pancreatitis and hepatic lipidosis. This kitty is a fighter and was back home after 3 days at the hospital.

I was hugely relieved to have Gabby back home even if I was still shell shocked. (Gizmo was overjoyed to have her back. He was literally jumping up and down and totally ignored the vetty smell. He missed Gabby!!) I belatedly realized that because I can speak medicalese, no one at the hospital bothered to teach me how to give a shot. (Of course, no one even mentioned home testing.) I learned to give a shot by watching videos on YouTube.

To add insult to injury, on the visit back to the hospital a few weeks later where the internal medicine vet wanted to do a curve, Gabby contracted ringworm. I now had both cats confined to my bedroom so I could contain the problem. While trying to maintain peace and in between having to bathe both cats in a sulfur lime solution and sanitize my condo from top to bottom on a weekly basis, I stumbled on to FDMB about 2 months after Gabby’s diagnosis. The rest, as they say is history.

Gabby has the honor of having taught many kitties here how to cliff dive. She is a diva who enjoys keeping me on my toes. The people here who taught me how to manage those numbers, helped to keep Gabby safe when I was making newbie blunders. The almost instantaneous response to a question, the way people rallied those first several times when I saw low green numbers and continue to rally when I post some absurdly low number, the encouragement and support that are consistently provided continue to leave me in a state of awe. And, the generosity of spirit that pervades LL has kept me here to pay it forward. Thank you all for making LL the community that it is.

What an awesome post, Sienne. It is hard to believe that someone with your caliber of expertise was once a newbie--geez you've come quite a long way. And thank you wholeheartedly and always, for all your help with Gobbles & your generous help you have given to me and FDMB members :-D

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~306 Happy #4

Thank Heavens for your 4th Anniversary Gabby!!!

Oh my gosh Sienne. Your heart must fill up every time you look at her, just realizing everything she had to fight to stay with you. What a trial by fire you had. Trying to imagine Sienne and Gabby as newbies, blundering is a little difficult. But it gives hope to all of us that someday we might be able to offer advice to a frightened newbie. Like you do for us. Bless your selfless, helping little heart. May there always be an "ummm....." from Sienne on this board.

Many hugs, scritches and thanks from us.

HAPPY 4th ANNIVERSARY GABBY!!!

Hi Sienne. Thank you for sharing Gabby's (& your) incredible journey. She sure had to overcome an awful lot; she sure is a fighter. It sounds like Gizmo had an immediate connection with her and they have grown even closer over the years.

Thank you again for sharing your and Gabby's story and thank you so much for all the help you have given me these past 9 months. It's appreciated more than one can say. Have a wonderful day Sienne.

HAPPY 4TH ANNIFURSARY GABBY!
Sienne, the story of you and Gabby's Dx shows how such a sick kitty can recover and become a happy, healthy, loving kitty again with the right bean's love and care. That first month must have been exhausting! We are all so happy and grateful that it all worked out for the diva and for how much you continue to help us newbies. :-D

Re: 5/26 Gabby PMPS~287, +2.5~162 Happy #4

Thank you all for your very kind words. It has been my privilege to offer whatever help I can. I love getting to know all of the LL kitties and beans and having them get to know Gabby and Gizmo. This is truly a very unique and special place.

It looks like Gabby has cleared her bounce and she received her dose reduction after her visit to the very shallow end of the lagoon last night.

Happy Fourth, Sweet Gabby!!! Such an incredible start to this journey...it just shows how much love and a determined bean can accomplish!

Happy anniversary Sienne and Gabby!

It's amazing to read how much you've been through together. You've been such a help to Angie and I, and I'm sure to so many others. It's good to hear your newbie blunder stories too!

Happy Anniversary!

What a wonderful story - Gabby sure is a little fighter - you've been through a lot - I wish that this is your last On-The-Juice anniversary and we get to start celebrating OTJ anniversaries from now on! I am very thankful you are here paying it forward - you've helped us tremendously through some nerve-wracking "surfs", and with all your hard-earned experience you can read our condo and see something we missed and, with a single sentence, get us more fine-tuned. Have a terrific day!
