Today is the second anniversary of Gabby being OTJ – ON the juice! In many ways and like many of the kitties here, it is nothing short of a miracle that Gabby survived the first days of her diagnosis.

Shortly before Gabby was diagnosed, Gizmo joined the family. If you think he is irrepressible now, Gizmo at 4 months was even more energized. It was hard to tell how much of Gabby’s behavior was due to Gizmo being, well, Gizmo. In retrospect, her hiding was probably due to the FD and not Gizmo being a pest. I began to notice an acetone/alcohol smell on Memorial Day.

That Tuesday, we were at the vet’s office bright and early. Gabby’s BG was elevated, she was lethargic, throwing ketones, dehydrated – in other words, a very sick kitty. My vet told me she had DKA, they wanted to stabilize her in the office and then I would need to transport her to a local 24 hour ER/ICU. Both my vet and the vet at the ER gently mentioned that not all cats survive DKA.

I was calling the ER every 6 hours for reports on Gabby’s labs. Overnight, her electrolytes had stabilized and were beginning to return to normal values. In the meantime, they did a thorough work-up and further diagnosed pancreatitis and hepatic lipidosis. This kitty is a fighter and was back home after 3 days at the hospital.

I was hugely relieved to have Gabby back home even if I was still shell shocked. (Gizmo was overjoyed to have her back. He was literally jumping up and down and totally ignored the vetty smell. He missed Gabby!!) I belatedly realized that because I can speak medicalese, no one at the ER bothered to teach me how to give a shot. (Of course, no one even mentioned home testing.) I learned to give a shot by watching videos on YouTube.

To add insult to injury, on the visit back to the ER where the internal medicine vet wanted to do a curve, Gabby contracted ringworm. I now had both cats confined to my bedroom so I could contain the problem. While trying to maintain peace and in between having to bathe both cats in sulfur lime solution, I stumbled onto FDMB about 2 months after Gabby’s diagnosis. The rest, as they say, is history.

Gabby has the honor of having taught many kitties here how to cliff dive. She is a diva who enjoys keeping me on my toes. Those dives and the people here who taught me how to manage those numbers, helped to keep Gabby safe when I was making newbie blunders. The almost instantaneous response to a question, the way people rallied those first several times when I saw low green numbers and continue to rally when I post some absurdly low number, the encouragement and support that are consistently provided continue to leave me in a state of awe. And, the generosity of spirit that pervades LL has kept me here to pay it forward. Thank you all for making LL the community that it is.

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191

Wow, what a story. I'm glad Gabby came through that ok and that you and her made into this board

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191

Aww...great story Sienne.
Gabby is a fighter all the way.

Many, many thank-you's for the countless hours you spend paying it forward in LL. Your continuous support has helped so many of us new and new and old through many good and bad times!

I know I need to mention you diva Gabby.....nice AMPS. :-D

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191

Sienne - What a great story. Gabby has come a long way because of you. Congratulations on the anniversary! You are an inspiration to many of us just starting out. I really appreciate all you do for LL and value your input and guidance. Thank you so much for all you do!

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191

Wow, what a story of Gabby's diagnosis and what you and she have been thru with her illness. I love how Gizmo was being the cheerleader when Gabby arrived home. And ER not even showing you how to shoot!! Just two years on the juice for Gabby, and you know so much, Maggie is on the juice a year and a half, and I still feel like a newbie at times. (I'm slow.) Thanks for paying it forward as you've helped me so many times and everyone here on LL. I know Gabby will continue doing well under your guidance, and I get such a kick hearing about Gabby and Gizmo. Have a wonderful day.

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191

fd is something i would never wish on any kitty, but i am so glad that you are here. thanks for sharing a little bit of gabby and gizmo with us every day, and congratulations on making it through two difficult, amazing, educational, and entertaining years.

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +2~113

Sienne - I am so glad you shared the story of Gabby. Wow what a rollercoaster its been for you guys. Did you know about FHL before her diagnosis? I sure wish I had with Maverick. ohmygod_smile I do everything I can so people can avoid having the same experience we did. Its like Maverick's legacy, to help people and their cats avoid getting it.

I've heard about Gabby's famous cliff diving. She is very lucky to have such a knowledgeable owner. Able to understand the complexities of this disease and treatment. I don't think I'd have brain cells left if she were mine.

I always love hearing about Gabby and Gizmo. Happy Anniversary ;) Give her a belly rub from me.

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +2~113, +3~53

Sienne, I never thought about the fact that you also, were once a frightened newbie.
You weren't born, knowing how to give a shot?? :-D
It's no secret that you've been my hero for the last year. I so respect and appreciate the help, you so willingly give to us.
How lucky for Miss Gabby, that she chose you, to be her mama. How lucky for us, that you found FDMB.
Thank You

Happy Annifursary Gabby!!!
:RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

I'm a firm believer that these milestones are a huge cause for celebration! Your little diva fighter has come sooo far, and juice or no, is in a much better place today than she was two years ago! I cannot say thank you enough, Sienne for all of your help, support and friendship. I literally don't know where we'd be without you.

Though, I have to say, the thought of Giz bouncing around at his Gabby's return home is the piece of the story that has most stolen my heart... and once again has me thinking that Willie and my new house may need a kitten!!

Hope you all have a wonderful day!!

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +2~113, +3~53, +4~60

Hi guys .. What a story you two have to share .. and I echo the words of others, how grateful I am for all the advice you gave me and mocha along the way .. Mocha and gabby were diagnosed nearly the same time and while we struggled, it just seemed to come so natural to you, taking care of gabby and all the other "newbies" on here without batting an eye .. So thank you Sienne, and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO GABBY!! CELEBRATE THIS IN STYLE LITTLE GIRL!!

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +2~113, +3~53, +4~60

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +2~113, +3~53, +4~60

what an amazing story and what a fighter Gabby is.
And thank the heavens for this place and its wonderful kind people

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +2~113, +3~53, +4~60

awesome story, sienne, thanks for sharing it. i have come to the conclusion that having fd isn't the worst thing in the world, and in some ways it's been a blessing. i always loved my kitty, but nothing like fear of losing one to bond you even closer. then add the daily caregiving, and you end up with a very special love. i see that in you and gabby - and it's cause to celebrate.

thanks from me, too, for all you do to "give back" to all of us now. i understand why. having someone help you through what truly is a frightening crisis when you hit low numbers or your kitty gets sick, that is a gift beyond value. we all recognize it.

*clinking glasses* a toast to you and all those at FDMB who help save kitties! have a super day!

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +2~113, +3~53, +4~60

what a wonderful milestone for celebration!

as i mentioned earlier via email... i shudder to think what would have happened to gabby had she been in someone else's care, sienne. you've been her rock through all of this... her voice... her advocate. gabby is one lucky kitty to have entered your life!

saying "thank you" for sticking around to pay it forward seems so inadequate, but thank you on behalf of all of us!

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +2~113, +3~53, +4~60

(((Sienne)))

What an amazing, inspiring story and the stabilizing force behind Gabby's journey has been you. What an incredibly lucky girl she is to have you....I doubt many could have brought her through all those hurdles. She may still be FD, but look at how beautiful and healthy she is. All of this is your work AND hers because you gave her the chance and she fights for you.

And what an amazing inspiring gift YOU are to LL!! You've pulled my you know what out of the fire many times, answered endless questions, offered comfort, shared your humor. Thank you more than you will ever know. I don't know how you juggle work, Gabby, and helping the countless newbies and oldbies in LL. So hats off to you on Gabby's annifursary.

Happy Annifursary Miss Beautiful Gabby!!! I see you are celebrating it in

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +2~113, +3~53, +4~60

Happy 2 year anniversary, Sienne and Gabby!

What a journey! Gabby is very fortunate to have you for a bean, I share Jill's shudder to think how differently Gabby might have fared with a different caregiver! With you, she is healthy, happy and able to be a diva, knowing you will keep her safe...what a lucky kitty!

I join with everyone else in thanking you for all you do here in LL. Your generosity with your time, knowledge, experience, compassion and common (not so common!) sense is SO very much appreciated!

I see Gabby just HAD to dive today...nice curve management, as usual!

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +3~53, +4~60, PMPS~351, +2~277

Of course Gabby had to show a bit of green and than bounce.

Thank you all for the very kind words. Every day, I learn something while on this journey with Gabby. I also learn from everyone here.

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +3~53, +4~60, PMPS~351, +2~277

What an inspiring story. And yes, happy anniversary! The bond that FD does bring about really is amazing...with our kitties, and with the good people of FBMB.

Thanks for all your help and support.

HAPPY ANNIFURSARY GABBY!!!

WOW, and quite the story on Gabby. Some of it I knew, some of it not. Amazing little girl you have there. Amazing bean that she has. What an inspiration you are to all of us.

I will smile at the diving diva part. if only because there is a diving dude here. He learned from the best. I will take this moment to thank you for teaching me how to handle Mannie, and his dives, and his bungees, and this trampolines, and all those midnight cliff dives. He is in a much better place today because of you, and the LL community.

Enjoy this special day. Two years of a happy content kitty. What could be better than that?

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~191, +3~53, +4~60, PMPS~351, +2~277

Happy Anniversary O(n)TJ Gabby! You are an inspiration and you never cease to pull off amazing feats: grand dives, beautiful bounces, lots of greens (and, of course, other colors). You can do it all!! Your mamabean is a lucky woman to have you to keep her on her toes, with a little help from Gizmo.

Sienne, as you and Gabby celebrate this milestone I want to add my thanks for the help you so generously give to all of us. You are the best!

Have a lovely evening with your kitties,

Ella & Rusty

Well, a bittersweet anniversary. I am glad that Gabby is here to celebrate this anniversary - but so wish that she could go travel to the falls. You have done such an awesome job, not only with Gabby, but being a mentor to so many here on FDMB. Sienne - you are a huge rock on this board. You are so willing to share your knowledge and help all the rest of us here. FDMB is lucky to have you - thanks for all you do!

Nice numbers Ms. Diva this am - so why dont you try something different and not bounce??
