Vet day, today.

The 419 was a little discouraging - but the 241 @ +9 was nice. I usually see her much higher near the end of her cycle and I was expecting worse news.

I fell asleep before he nadir last night - I even set an alarm on my phone and still slept thru it. But it looked like she was going to stay in the blues.

She ate pretty well this morning. At first, she didn't get up for breakfast but I walked to her and showed her the bowl of food - I think I was up too many times last night and she didn't get a meal those time, so this time she was like, "Oh wait, you're really going to feed me this time". Then she got up and came into the kitchen to eat. Ate approx 2 Tbsp - I had to keep fluffing the food for her - she seems to like me messing with the food and then she eats a little, looks at me, I fluff it up and she eats more. Like it's new and different every time I touch it - LOL.

I am really not looking forward to another vet appt. I will update when we get back.

Krys
Big Cat looks identical to a cat I have had - Mischief! Her fur felt more like feathers than fur.
She was a unique kitty as I'm sure Mr. Big Cat was too!

Re: 5/25 Kasha AMPS 419 Vet Update

Ok - that took forever...

Kasha had an abdominal ultrasound (goodbye fancy boots I can't afford now) and blood tests. The tests ordered were:

PLI/TLI/Folate/Cobalamin

Results should be in by end of week. Checking for pancreatitis.

Ultrasound results: Her spleen is somewhat enlarged, but still within upper limits of normal. Appeared normal in texture, echogenicity and contour
Her liver is also enlarged and slightly hyperechoic, but normal in texture and contour - consistent with diabetes
Gall bladder minimally distended with anechoic bile
Left kidney 3.2 cm, slightly irregular in contour and mild decrease in corticomedullary definition
Right kidney 3.78 cm slightly irregular in contour, mild decrease in corticomedullary definition and moderate dilation of renal pelvis (.35 cm)
Urinary bladder contained only minimal urine (Kasha peed all over them for keeping us waiting) - difficult to image but no obvious abnormalities
No abnormalities noted in GI tract, no free fluid

Impression: Chronic renal changes, Right renal pelvic dilation, borderline splenomegaly, hepatomegaly

The renal changes and dilation of right renal pelvis may indicate presence of pyelonephritis (kidney infection).

Recommended treatment: Longer course of antibiotics. She should be cultured at about 14 days on the Baytril and if the culture comes back clear, she should continue on Baytril for another 2 weeks, with another culture a week after completion. If urine culture is NOT clear, she should be switched to another AB, and when she finally does culture clear, continue on THAT AB for another 2 weeks, with a follow-up culture a week after completion.

Whew - Long day - going to go out for a meal now. She was starving when she got home, so I gave her some FF and chicken. I thought she'd be very thirsty, but not so much.

Happy to see Kasha is home now and results seem okay. Just lots more pilling for a while.

Maybe the Pedro and Kasha can get together at the party and compare bald bellies.

Who needs boots when you have Kasha to keep your feet warm.

I hope the infection clears up soon. Between an infection and the diabetes she has a lot going on inside, but nothing that can't be managed. Belle had a liver infection that turned out to be resistant to everything but clindamycin, and after a she went on it, she seems much better.

Wishing the best for you both.

Well, at least you have some answers and have a course of action!. I hope Kasha feels better soon.

I also hope you enjoyed your meal out. Sometimes eating out can be oh so nice....at least you don't have to cook or clean up!!

Re: 5/25 Kasha AMPS 419 Vet Update

Sounds like Kasha expressed her displeasure and yours at being kept waiting. (Talk about being "pissed off.") At least this all sounds manageable even though your not crazy about pilling. It may also explain why the numbers aren't coming down if there's still a UTI. They can be tough to treat sometimes.

Re: 5/25 Kasha AMPS 419 Vet Update

Didn't eat that great tonight for dinner - of course, that could be because she basically ate an entire meal when we got back from the vet visit. She was so hungry... So, I'm not really concerned that she ate a little less for dinner. She still ate over 1 Tbsp and I'll whip out another entree for her to sample in a little bit.

Yeah Sienne - when I look at her SS and see how well she was doing until the UTI in April - I'm thinking that infection never really cleared up completely - then her crazy numbers make a little more sense... We are going in tomorrow (my boss is not going to be thrilled, but I'll try to leave at lunch and come back to work for a few hours after) to get a culture - my vet is closed Fri and Saturday (repaving the drive/parking lot), so I need to get this culture done and back before the weekend. They said they might have to admit her if she doesn't have enough urine in her - I say, grab a sterile cup the moment we walk in, because my kitties ALWAYS pee when they get there... The only reason she didn't have a full bladder for her ultrasound today is because she was busy providing copious urine samples in the exam room before they took her back there. Hopefully, the Baytril is doing its thing and we can continue with it, because the Internal Med vet we saw today felt Baytril is excellent for this type of infection.

And you don't know how happy I was when the vet went thru the ultrasound pics today and told me what she DIDN'T find (growths, tumors, etc.). Or maybe you do know how happy I was...

And, today's pilling news: I tried pill pockets again and it worked today. She got wise to them quickly years ago, so I didn't bother this time, especially since the ones I had were full of corn syrup and crap like that. But then I found something new (to me) over the weekend - the Pill Pockets Allergy formula... Does everyone know about this but me? Anyway - they have NO corn syrup in them and the first ingredient is duck (low allergen risk). Kasha may only have eaten it today because it's novel, but it would be great if I could get some more use out of them, cuz pilling today was EZ!

At first I thought "How does she know about Kasha's belly?!?!?" I've been a little out of it today - I tried to turn on the air conditioner (for Kasha, not me) and I thought it wasn't working, called my Dad, checked the breaker box and was resigning myself to a warm evening when I realized I'd somehow gotten the controls mixed up and when I lowered the desired temp, it kicked on. User error. I've only had central air for about 6 years in this house (and most of my life before that), how was I supposed to remember how to work it? Doesn't bode well... think I'll skip operating any heavy machinery (i.e. car) for the evening...

Oh, you don't know Kasha... that warmth you feel in your toes? That's the blood she's left in her wake after a sneak attack for no reason you can determine...

Thanks for the well wishes, Jason. I'll remember the clindamycin in case this doesn't clear up (even though that particular AB wreaked havoc on both me and my dad when we have tried taking it - we had crazy reactions to it on separate occasions and now it's on our list of things we do not take... But I have to remember, Kasha is adopted, so our hereditary weakness shouldn't affect her results with it)

I'm actually glad they think the infection is still lingering, because that helps explain the numbers. Now that we have an explanation, though, I hope Kasha will get to work on clearing out the rest of that nasty infection so she can get back into nice numbers.

Good heads up on the pill pockets. Whose brand are they and where did you find them??

They are Feline Greenies Pill Pockets, Roasted Duck and Pea Allergy Formula . I found them at a Pet Supplies Plus near me (but looks like lots of online stores have them too).

Ingredients: Duck, glycerin, dried peas, natural flavors, vegetable oil, water, salt, potassium sorbate, xanthan gum, citric acid, preserved with mixed tocopherols.
