Good Morning ~O) I woke up at 6:30 a.m. from someone howling pathetically for food; he wanted a fresh can. I was so tired so I went BTB and then heard him frantically trying to scratch a hole, I suppose, through the laundry room door, so I got up and let him in, then BTB again. I blame it on the moon :-D I woke up a few hours later with a shower of kisses and purrs, then his frantic dash to the bathroom for TP duty. His appetite has definitely increased since his OTJ Trial; he's been a member of the CPC for at least a week.

If I don't visit your condo, please forgive me; we are having a big family & neighbors picnic and I have a lot of cleaning to do and will have a houseful of guests from afternoon to evening

Re: 5/25 Gobbles AMBG 91 OTJ Trial Day 9

LOL! We had a dog eat a hole through a sheet of plywood to get at food. Or, sometimes I think simply because she was nuts. I hope Gobby doesn't get that extreme!

To follow up on your PM, ketones are a byproduct of the body metabolizing fatty acids for fuel. This is a perfectly normal process in some cases - nutritional-ketosis when the body has fewer carbs to burn and then turns on the fat-burning engine. Several organs in the body function just fine using some types of ketones as energy. But with diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can occur even when an abundance of carbs are available because there isn't enough insulin available to allow the body to use glucose for energy. Then ketone level can become significantly high, and the body excretes ketones in the urine. So to answer your question, if Gobby is producing enough insulin, he isn't receiving insulin exogenously (injections) and his BGs are in a normal range (which you will know because you will be continuing to BG test periodically even after he (paws crossed) goes OTJ), there is no need to test for them in the absence of any other signs.

Here are a couple references, the first showing when testing should be done: Ketoacidosis testing guidelines and a sticky on Ketone testing.

Go GOBBY Go!

Congrats on DAY NINE!!

On DKA, it's also important to note that infection can play a big role in development of DKA because it can alter the effectiveness of the insulin. We often see DKA developing in cats from infection + not enough insulin + not enough food (glucose).
