I just found the Fortiflora and the expiration date is "Best before May 31 2011" - I'm just under the wire - how lucky is that! Thanks for mentioning it Sienne.

Hi guys - I am so glad Maggie is home and that everything went well. YAY!! Way to go Maggie. I too think that half the dose is a good idea. Good luck tonight - I hope she recovers quickly.

Oh my, Maggie is 175 at +1 - I'm so glad we shot the half dose! I will get a +2 and get her to eat a little bit of fuds.

Yogurt (plain, Greek style, no fat, with active cultures) is a good substitute for FortiFlora. Hi Ann & Maggie, we are so glad that Maggie's dental went well and hope that the tooth fairy will be along tonight with a nice little present. You've had a long day. Good luck with getting back on schedule.

hi ann. since this is so early in the cycle to have such a big drop, it might not be a bad idea to give maggie a little hc gravy instead of the mc.

I gave her maybe a tsp gravy - but just gave it to her so it prob. hasn't taken effect. Should I give more. She thinks it's ice cream! :smile:

Ann, I am just now able to check up on how Maggie did today. Glad everything went well and good call on the 1/2 dose. Hoping you have an uneventful evening -- here that, Maggie? No more dropping lower tonight!

how long does it take to get to the nearest ER (unless your vet is still open)?

and retest in 20 minutes..

this drop is because of the anesthesia. the insulin may just be kicking in now.

if we can't stop the drop by your next test, i would take her to an ER. they can put her on a glucose drip for a couple of hours.

BUT we're putting the cart before the horse.

let's see where she's at in 20 minutes. the karo might very well do the trick!

I'm shocked at the drop - would just the drop dose cause this drop, or she most likely would have dropped, hard to tell. she's usually predictable.

More gravy and karo, right!

Yup on the gravy and karo.

This is the effect of the anesthesia. Lantus onset is beginning about now which is why you want numbers up so you don't have to fight both insulin and anesthesia.

this isn't the insulin causing the drop... it's the anesthesia causing the drop. the anesthesia eats glucose.
there's no way of knowing how long the effects of the anesthesia will last. it could be over in an hour or two... could be several hours.

if maggie were mine, i would probably take her to an ER where they could put her on a glucose drip for a few hours... just to be on the safe side.
what do you think?

do you have someone to take you? if you go take the karo, numbers, and your testing supplies with you in the car.

Would we be safe to assume that she has taken Maggie to the ER.. I don't see her online any more.. Does any one have an update.. Please!

I'm still here - she wouldn't eat the gravy mixed in with the karo, so I syringed a little karo in her. I'm just about to take another poke. BRB!

I know she'll do what's best, I just saw she wasn't showing up online any more and got worried.. I'm glad she's back now.. I'm gonna stay out of the way and let you guys fix Maggie up.. Good luck Ann.. Come on Maggie, we're all here with you girl!

At +3 she's up to 93 !! Yes, Jill I use the Alpha trak! I know so it reads 25-30 points higher. I was getting all dressed to take her to ER. I guess we're not out of the woods yet, right. I'll keep testing.

I think these higher numbers are due to the Karo. As it wears off, you're going to be fighting the Lantus plus the anesthesia. Good decision to head out to the ER. Is anyone going with you?

ann, it's your call, but i have to tell ya...
that's the karo talking and you have a kitty who doesn't want to eat. that combined with not knowing how long the effects of the anesthesia will last (you could be fighting this for many hours yet)... if i were you i would go.

I just read all your posts above - do you still think I should take to the ER at 93? She's eating and lapping up the gravy, and I can syringe a little karo in her. I just bought a bottle of strips. so can keep testing.

P.S. she is eating okay - it's the karo mixed in with the gravy that she doesn't like - Yes, it is the karo and gravy causing the spike.

Ann...don't forget that the anesthesia also affects GI motility...she may not be able to eat enough to keep the numbers up without scarf 'n barf reaction. It is your call though.

FWIW, how many times have you seen the experienced people here strongly encourage someone to go to the ER? Safety is always first. It's your call but if it were me, I'd be getting into the car.

I am going to ditto to the ER suggestion,
a lot of concern about how long this will take to get Maggie safely back up and the toll on you as well.

if you're getting ready , can u check her again and post?
 
At 15-20 minutes since last tested, she is 101 bg, so it looks like she is climbing. What would you think if I did a couple more checks before deciding. Maggie is normally an early Nadir like at +3! I'm all ready to go but hope possible she'll go up. She's acting fine, but I know it doesnt't mean she's fine - gave her pain med a while ago.
 
ann, nadir means nothing here. it's the effects of the anesthesia that we're dealing with. this is not a typical low numbers situation in LL.

i have no idea how long the effects of the anesthesia will last. no one does. it could be over in 15 minutes. it may not be over for several hours yet.
i mentioned what i would do. i'd much rather err on the side of safety than be sorry later.
whether you go or not is your call...
