Well, poor Mr. Darcy had a long day. I took him to the vet today for an enema. They gave it and by 1 p.m., I called and still nothing had happened. Apparently in the late afternoon things started to happen. He had a lot of backed up stool in there. I've never done this before so I don't really know what to expect. He seems to be more comfortable now, but he looks "weird." It's like his eyes are squinty or something. He doesn't look right in the face to me. And his BG! Off the chart. Oh well... at least he's okay. I don't know if he will eat yet. I will offer him food now and see.

He has to be feeling better after the "big poop". I hope he is okay with those squinty eyes. Maybe he was just scowling at you after the embarrassment of an enema. :arghh: Hopefully, his BG will come down after the trauma of the day. Come on Darcy, eat your dinner for your poor, worried Mom. Thanks for the update. I worry about you when I don't hear from you. Susie was higher at +2 than PMPS so I'm crossing my fingers I will get a good night's sleep. Goodnight, lady.

Poor Mr. Darcy. I hope he feels better soon. He must feel a great deal of relief, though.
Butters had an enema not long ago and even though she pooped a lot at the vet's about an hour after, I had to keep her confined to the bathroom overnight because she leaked watery poop for almost 24 hours after and she had soft poop for the next couple of days. IDK if it will be the same for Darcy. The second time, they did a micro-enema instead and she was pretty much back to normal within about eight hours.
To try to keep Butters regular, I make all of her meals soupy and I add a pinch of ground flax, fish oil and coconut oil to some of them. I also give her digestive enzymes and probiotics but I think it's the extra water that really helps. I do a 2:1 water:food ratio.

I expect tonight PMPS is as a result of today's "procedure", poor Mr. Darcy. Plus some BG's raising from the constipation. Take a look at Kierra's SS to see what happened to her numbers when the lactulose started making her regular again. :D

Hi Suzanne, that red number is for red hot, how dare you allow someone to do something so embarrassing :mad::mad: That squint is because he’s had all that squeezing to do at the other end. I hope his belly is feeling better. I hope he can let go of that angry red and give you an eyes wide open sunny yellow smile. :joyful: Sending out healing tummy prayers and Dolly’s special hungry tummy vibes. Mr Darcy is giving you the stink eye! Can you pick which of these emojis has eyes matching Darcy's? o_O or this :confused: maybe? I checked your s/s, I KNEW it. Mr Darcy evacuated. He didn't do a great big poop. So unrefined. I think my BG would be high too.

I remember @Butters & Lyla barricaded in the bathroom, I think it was not long after I joined. And now I think of the summer shave, I imagine it was pretty ugly back there since it was pre-shave. We had a long-haired cat when I was young and my dad used to say she got 'clangers' (like the clanger inside a bell) - swinging back and forth as she ran away from us trying to wipe/trim her....not that I see Mr Darcy behaving like that.

I hope he eats well and feels better. We'll see how angry he is tonight, if he deigns to sleep with you tonight or makes you suffer without his presence!! :bighug::bighug:

He is just very tired tonight. He just got up on the bed with me though so I am not being punished! He is not eating though. I think he is too tired.

Oh yes! I remember when that happened to Butters. Did it affect her BG ? Either the constipation or when it was resolved?
 
Oh goodness. I am so sorry the enema had to be done but I really hope it helps and Darcy will feel better tomorrow. I empathize. Constipation is a very common occurrence among CKD kitties that's compounded by the diabetes. Ruby would always get higher numbers before the stress of having to go, hence the #bluepoop and if she had an easy time of it #greenpoop. I've read though that cats on a raw food diet poop less because more of the food they eat is digestible, therefore less comes out the other end. That gives me comfort sometimes but I still worry a lot when three days pass.

Did your vet give you a prescription of lactulose in case it happens again? Did he/she have an suggestions to help?

That's why, if a cat is prone to constipation fiber is a good idea. When they can use everything they eat, there's nothing to work with. Just a tip :D

I didn’t get my regular vet yesterday. I got the other vet. He is too scared of my regular vet to do anything other than what I asked for. I did contact the vet this morning and left a request for Lactulose because this morning Darcy passed some fairly hard-ish stool. I asked if he had any suggestions about preventing this and he didn’t except to add fiber. Argh. And the questions that I left with my regular vet went unanswered. I said I was concerned about using Benazepril because it can reduce the GFR in the kidneys (therefore worsening azotemia.). Also, I mentioned that there is a caution in Plumb’s about taking Cabergoline at the same time as other blood pressure lowering meds. Cabergoline can apparently lower blood pressure and adding other BP meds to that has the potential to cause a hypotensive event that is damaging to the kidneys. All he said was that Benazepril is “good for the kidneys.” He means that it increases blood flow. It does do that. It is usually only prescribed for CKD if the cat has proteinuria. It does help with proteinuria but there’s no evidence that survival time is extended. Anyway, I am frustrated. I have not given the Benazepril since Sunday. Today, I checked his BP with my home unit and it was 128/73, 125/72, and 120/78.

I read on another forum that cellulose helps. As soon as I get some, I am going to try it. The quantity suggested was 1/16 tsp of cellulose powder (from Nutricology) twice a day with an upper limit of 1/2 tsp (this was for a 10# cat).
