5/23 Phoenix / Worried about low numbers

Phoenix has been bouncing a lot lately but what happened last night really worried me. Usually, Phoenix has a high PMPS but last night his BG was 161. I checked his BG again at +2 and it was 144.

I was worried that he might drop lower. It was midnight and I was very tired. We had a bad storm last week and I had a lot of large tree limbs come down. Most of them were as big around as my waist. I had used my chainsaw for 3 hours cutting and dragging tree limbs.

So, when Phoenix dropped to 144, I gave him some Fancy Feast medium carb. Usually, I would have given him low carb but I was very tired and was worried about not being able to check every hour. I checked Phoenix again at +3 and his BG was 207. Phoenix has a habit of dropping fast so I set my alarm to check him again at +5. That would have been 3:30 a.m. However, I slept through my alarm and didn't wake up until 5:30 at +8. Thankfully, his BG was 239.

Does anyone have any solutions as how to wake me up when I need to check his BG. I have 5 acres of land to take care of so the summers are very busy and exhausting. It horrified me that I slept through the alarm last night. The alarm did go off because it showed 2 hours past alarm. I really need to keep Phoenix safe and don't want his numbers to get too low. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

He doesn’t seem to drop under 50. I only see once this year in February. I’d be using an auto feeder or leaving lots of food out. You need to sleep. :bighug:

Have you tried drinking a large glass of water before going to bed? That was Jill's trick for getting people up when they needed to.
Wouldn't work for me. I can go 10 hours on a car trip without having to stop and that's with drinking a thermos of coffee.

I am more inclined to look for a real loud alarm clock. Phoenix usually eats just meat. I know a lot of people use auto feeders but I like to see how he is doing myself. I don't like giving him foods with carbs unless he needs them. I am going to search the internet for a real loud alarm clock.

Since I am retired, I can always make up my lost sleep during the day if I need to. I really feel sorry for those of you who have to work and check their kitties. I would be dozing off at work

I am an insomniac so I never was able to make up my sleep. Max as been gone 4 1/2 years and I still wake up often even though my young girls don’t wake me. Good luck finding a loud alarm.

Susan, back in college, I needed a really loud alarm clock. I ended up buying a regular old clock radio/alarm, turning the volume allllll the way up on the radio, and setting the alarm to turn on the radio when it was time for me to wake up. It was terrifying. If you're looking for something to shock you awake, that'll certainly do the trick.

Best of luck with Phoenix tonight! :bighug:
