5-23 Mijo UTI. AMPS HI. +2 HI

Gave the reduction to 0.5. Didn't drop too low last night and now HI in the morning. Was going to give treats at +2 but he is still HI. I have no idea what the issue is? The needle definitely broke the skin and was injected this morning.

My Feeding Schedule is AMPS, +8, PMPS. I am wondering if I should move off giving a larger meal at +8. I was trying to work in treats at +2, +4. But days like today i have no idea.

Usually you just need to get a feeding schedule and stick to it, regardless of numbers. +8 is a bit late to serve a large meal.

He started a bounce after yesterday's low and went pink, then red, then black. Still in the black. I hope he will come down soon. I hate seeing the meter say HI.

I know I can't figure it out. It is so frustrating. It's almost like his body is not metabolizing the insulin. I have no idea if this is a bounce or for some reason went into muscle or if not getting enough insulin... I'm almost for certain the insulin went in this morning as I am seeing his skin now when I inject. Maybe it is still the UTI or antibiotic however my doctor stated the convenia won't have any effect on sugar levels.

I have my prescription for generic Lantus on order. Hopefully that will help once i start that to get him somewhat regulated. He seems definitely fine when he is high and he eats good, is peeing better now and drinking water. But I'm scared of the long term consequences if this continues. He is 16 years old in a few days and I understand his days are numbered, but want him to have a good remaining life.

What is a normal bounce cycle? Can they last a day or two? Maybe that is what I am seeing consistently?

Cats vary in the amount of time it takes to clear a bounce— they can take up to six cycles to clear. I do not think Mijo takes that long, but he does seem to come down and then do ot over again fairly frequently.

I’m happy to see a little yellow on there from last night. But back to black today :blackeye:
Yeap Suzanne- I just don't understand it! There was no way he bounced last night he was in the 200s. And now today he is in the blacks. Its like he is not receiving or metabolizing the insulin some days/nights...
Has anyone else had these types of issues before? I'm getting my Lantus generic script filled. Hopefully that will help a bit switching to that...

Yes cats can definitely bounce from yellow numbers! Some cats bounce from pink numbers if their bodies are used to higher numbers. It’s not uncommon at all. I think you do have some glucose toxicity to break through and doing either the modified prozinc method or switching to Lantus and doing tight regulation is best for Mijo. We need to break through.

Thanks. I have the Lantus generic pen set to go and I am thing of starting him tomorrow on it. Vet wants me to start at 1 Unit. Does that sound too aggressive. He is a bit over 9 pounds so following the Lantus board for weight that would equal 1U

I have been reading the TR method also. it looks like you take reductions much lower than SLGS. Let me know your thoughts. I plan to test at +3,+6, +9 tomorrow.

We usually recommend starting the new insulin at the same dose as the old insulin when switching from a non-depot insulin to a depot insulin. Tell me, have you ever tested him for ketones? That may make a difference in the recommendation. Make sure to start on a day where you will be able to test a lot. Start testing at +2. Make sure you have a variety of carbs available to feed and your hypo kit available with karo/honey and some high carb food like Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers. You probably already have all this stuff available.

Looking at the spreadsheet, I think it would be okay to start at .75. What do you think? Although I would like to know about ketones. He did drop below 90 on .75, but if you plan to follow TR or if you had been following MPM (which probably would have been better for Mijo in those high numbers) you would not have taken the reduction.

He was tested for ketones when he had his UTI a week ago and he was negative. I did get the pens and the U-100 syringes with half units. I plan to watch him all day today with frequent measurements. The 1U measurement would be easy since I can dial that on the pen. I could definitely try and figure out how to give the .5 or .75 measure by drawing it out of the pen with the syringe.

OK started at 0.75 of the Lantus it was much easier drawing out of the pen. I pushed my syringe to 0 and then drew out the insulin. Plus my U100 syringes are much shorter and easier to inject.

Do i need to do anything special on my graph? I highlighted it at the top. I can also move back over to the Lantus board again :)

We recommend drawing the insulin out of the pen with the syringe. Make sure not to introduce any air into the pen. Just insert a U -100 syringe into the tip and draw back- which sounds like what you did.

I would make a bar going across the spreadsheet saying— started Lantus. Don’t forget to change it in your signature as well.

If you want to start a new thread tomorrow maybe on the LLB forum and link this old thread in the top that would be good. Tag me over on the new thread.

Remember, that starting dose will need to be held for 5-7 days initially. The depot needs to fill before we can see what the dose will really do for him. After this, you will be able to make adjustments every three days.

Hopefully he starts rising quick. He is still hovering around 190 at +9.... Definitely a long curve. But i have to be able to give full dose of shot tonight

It won’t be like ProZinc. You will have to get used to doing “shoot low to stay low.” That’s the way it works. It’s going to be scary at first. Where is he now? I will look.

Hope all is well. If you need help right away, post over on the LLB forum and pit a ? In the title of your thread. If it’s an emergency, use the 911 in the title.
