For better or worse I'm taking him up to 2 units today. If he doesn't start to come down I will get a new pen or vial after the long weekend in case the one I was given has lost its potency. He woke me again and was crying for food for an hour beginning at 5 a.m. but this time just to make sure I didn't feed him. He is higher still so I think he needs more juice.

Update: I guess I made the right call as he isn't coming down on this first dose of 2 units. I know, I need to be patient. Maybe the doorbell ringing so many times with the a.c. being installed bothered him. Who knows?

Re: 5/23 Max AMPS 376 DOSECREASE

Hi guys .. hmm, definitely time to come down max! Good luck with the new dose .. I hope you see lots of blues and greens from it .. have a great weekend!

Re: 5/23 Max AMPS 376 DOSECREASE THIS A.M.+2.5=381+5=337

I don't know why Max is remaining so high. Nothing different is going on with him, same food, same schedule. I on the other hand am losing patience and feeling very discouraged.. Sometimes I wish I wasn't home testing and could be ignorant. He's eating and eliminating properly. If it weren't for the tests I would think all was well, sigh.

Elise, how old is your insulin? Is it clear with nothing floating in it? Perhaps it has lost its potency.

Max, you need to come down from there right away. Pink is not a good color for Memorial Day weekend. Yellows, blues and greens are all much better.

Hang in there, Elise. You are doing a great job. Put your patience pants on and give this dose a chance. :YMHUG:

Re: 5/23 Max AMPS 376 DOSECREASE+2.5=381+5=337

My original insulin is just over 6 months old without any particles and clear as the day I got it. The expiration isn't until 2015. I was given a vial that has not been open with an expiration of 9/14 that I started yesterday. If he doesn't come down by Tuesday, I'll get a script and get a pen this time. I did get the coupon and will hopefully find a pharmacy that will sell me one and look the other way when it sees it is for a cat. I just put in a new air conditioning unit that cost me a bundle so I hate to spend $200+ for a new vial if at all possible. Of course I will if I have to but hopefully not. I just wonder if the vial I just started has lost its potency as well. I've had it in the back of the fridge since I got it.

I feel like you often Elise because when I increase Rocky's insulin his blood glucose doesn't drop immediately. I always want to see a reax in the first cycle and I don't believe that I've ever gotten that before. My feeling about it is because I believe that for Rocky, I've usually drained his depot, or nearly drained it with the reduced amount so much so that his depot has to completely "fill" AGAIN before the insulin will take hold and have any effect. :YMSIGH:

It always means many, many days for Rocky to have blood glucose readings in the 300s, and I hate that. That's why I detest a reducie....

Well, at least Max is doing better today than Rocky. I was so tired and lacking in sleep this morning that I fed him 2x before I realized that I had not given him his shot!!! :o  ohmygod_smile

It does look like Max came down a little bit in response to the insulin though...Rocky usually heads up after a dosecrease before going down. He always get that New Dose Wonkiness. I wish I knew why that happens to him.

Re: 5/23 Max AMPS 376 DOSECREASE+2.5=381+5=337

Yesterday's increase was so tiny so with today's he got .25, the usual suggested increase. Every time I read your condo, I know exactly how you feel, Tina. You need to figure out how to get more sleep though. Your health is important too!!

Re: 5/23 Max AMPS 376 DOSECREASE+2.5=381+5=337

I bet the old insulin was toast....6 months is a really long time for an open vial of juice, even if it has no floaties and what nots in it. The expiration date applies to unopened vials. Basically, as soon as you stick a needle into a vial, the clock starts ticking. "Technically", that supposedly means you'll get 28 days out of it. Most of us get more...some may get up to 4 months, but not much more than that. Most get less. We usually don't get any more than 45 days out of a pen, if we're lucky.

So, if you just started a new, unopened vial yesterday, it could be like starting from square one...Max's shed has to refill and all that fun Lantus jazz. So yep, once again, it's time for a new pair of patience pants - it could definitely take several days before you really see results. Hopefully you'll start seeing results from the new juice soon. Until then, I would watch his numbers closely...it may suddenly kick in.

Have a great night, Elise...you're doing awesome, and Max WILL come down!!

Re: 5/23 Max AMPS 376 DOSECREASE+2.5=381+5=337PMPS 315

Thanks, Amy. So is it better to get the pens? I've read some are able to take it down to the last drop. I still had about 1/4 or more of the vial left. Does it make any difference that the new vial has an expiration date of 9/14 and my old one was good into 2015? I mean, since it expires in a few months will it be less potent at the beginning? Just curious.

Re: 5/23 Max AMPS 376 DOSECREASE+2.5=381+5=337PMPS 315

The pens are more cost effective, with a lot less waste. You're able to use them till the last drop because there isn't as much insulin in there - you can usually get through all of it before it loses its potency. Up front - especially without the coupon - the investment is greater than the vial, but in the long run, it is cheaper to use the pens unless you have a high dose kitty. With the coupon, if you can get a pharmacist to push it through, you just cannot beat the price of the pens. Either way, though, the pens really are a "cheaper" way, especially given how costly Lantus is these days.

With either the pens or the vials, the clock REALLY starts ticking as soon as you puncture that rubber stopper thingie for the very first time. Once you do that, the expiration date then becomes approximately 28 days from that point, give or take. So, your old one would have been good into 2015 if you didn't puncture it until 2015. But, as soon as you stuck a needle into it for a first time, the "expiration date" changed from 2015 to 28 days from that point.

Of course, though, as I said earlier, most of us do get more than 28 days out of a vial or pen. Keeping it in the fridge and being gentle with it does help extend the life possibly up to 4 months at the most, But I don't think anyone gets a full 6 months out of one, even though there may still be juice left in it.

Your vial dated 9/2014 should be just as potent as any other brand new vial, regardless of the expiration date...again, until you puncture it. So no, it should not be less potent at the beginning. If that were the case, the drug companies would have all sorts of issues on their hands, considering these are "technically" human meds!

I hope that makes sense...

Re: 5/23 Max AMPS 376 DOSECREASE+2.5=381+5=337PMPS 315

It makes perfect sense. Thanks, Amy. My vet told me the vial should last 5-6 months so I guess I pushed it to the limit. I was thinking it must be losing its zip but with the green numbers Max was getting I was told it was okay. I will watch closely and expect he might drop quickly once his depo is refilled. Thank you.

Re: 5/23 Max AMPS 376 INc+2.5=381+5=337PMPS 315+2=287

:YMHUG: Hugs for you Elise!

Hopefully the worn out insulin is the problem and Max will get right back to business for you with a new pen.

Have a nice weekend!
