Thank you to everyone who chimed in last night on the Points vs. Percentage vs. ECID. A lot of it made sense and most of all I guess ECID was the final outcome as to what might cause a bounce.

Last night, Sammy's numbers were looking pretty good, and at +4 he looked like he might possible get back to the GREEN, but then he started to rise again. This morning, I decided to stick with the .25u dose because I was considering taking Sammy to the vet to have him tested for an infection. But then I realized something.....

I started using a different Probiotic last night after +4, and STUPID :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead: me didn't read the ingredients, the first being Fructooligosaccharide, and I am assuming that is SUGAR. Which would explain why he started to climb after +4 last night. I didn't realize this until after I fed him the same food with it mixed in for breakfast.

So I think I need to give him some time to get that out of his system before I increase. I will see how he does during the cycles today and if he isn't down some by tomorrow morning then I will increase.

At this point I will probably wait until Tuesday to take him in to the vet to see if things don't settle down by then. If he is still showing higher numbers over 150 by Tuesday then I will definitely take him in, but based on the conversation I had with the doctor, I don't think it is an infection, he probably just needs a little more insulin support.

I hope everyone has a fabulous Friday.

I wouldn't trust that it didn't raise it. And i probably wouldn't give it simply because it's a substitute.
We've gotten rid of all the manmade/re-engineered substitutes.... for ourselves.
DH had troubles with splenda, put him in hospital.

I started to have a problem with Splenda also, now I won't touch the stuff.

I am still concerned there is something more going on. Sammy is now over 300. I just don't know what to do, so we are headed to the vet in about an hour. I really wanted to avoid this if possible, but it appears that I just need to get things checked out for my piece of mind.

Any suggestions as to what to get checked other than a possible infection. I am sure she will look at his teeth also. I dread getting a dental done. I personally don't like the dentist and I know it wouldn't be fun for Sammy, and then there is the UNKNOWN cost. Just that alone puts me off from getting a dental done.

I know dentals are scary but not getting them are scary too. I would get a full blood panel with urinalysis and a fructosamine to see what really is happening with his BG. If he needs dental extractions that might be why he failed the OTJ trial. :bighug:

We are back from the vet with no more information than when we left. There is no infection and even with a full panel there was nothing that really stood out that might be causing the higher numbers. So I am hoping that it was just the probiotic.

I did go ahead and increase to .5u tonight because he is still so high and wasn't making much progress on the .25u dose.

The one thing that did come of the visit was that I talked to the doctor about a phosphorus binder. @Amy&TrixieCat I know you said that you are now using Brock Labs ConSeal AIH. Could you tell me where you get it. My vet said they don't carry it, but she would be happy to write a prescription.

I'm sorry you don't have any answers but hoping it is the new probiotic.

I got my AH ( aluminum hydroxide gel) from thriving pets.com. It's a powder that is fairly tasteless. But before you start with a binder, what is his phosphorus? If it's in the middle of the range you don't need to add it yet.

I'm sorry the vet wasn't able to give you any answers Tina. It does look as though it might be the probiotic - it's too much of a coincidence that his numbers got so bad right after he had it for the first time. I really hope that's all it is and that he settles back down into good numbers for you once that's clear of his system. :bighug:

His Phosphorus is 6.4.

I really hope that was all it was. It is so frustrating!

I just read that AH could cause constipation, how do you prevent this? Do you supplement with Miralx?

I get the Brock Labs ConSeal AIH directly from my vet. I don't think it requires a script, but I do think it is only available through vets. If you would like, I can pick some up for you and mail it to you. I'm actually going there tomorrow morning to pick some up for Trix - I would be happy to get a second box for you if you would like. I used the tasteless powder for quite some time and Trix did OK with it, but I noticed that if I tried to give her food that was even a little bit "leftover" with the powder in it, she would refuse it. And, there were times that she would refuse fresh food with the powder, too. I have to say, since I've started her on the ConSeal, she doesn't really refuse ANY of the foods - fresh or leftover. It really must be as palatable as they claim. Her appy has been noticeably better since I started it.

Sammy's phosphorous, although in the normal range, is on the high side of normal. I know my vetty starts getting a little edgy when she starts seeing numbers over 6.0.

As far as constipation goes, we've been lucky with Trix...so far so good, so no added meds for that.

Do you just break up the chews and sprinkle them on her food? How many do you feed Trixie ever day, and do you have to make sure she gets a little with each meal?

For Trix, I shave a little off each chew and mix it in with each meal or snack. Each chew is about as big as a human multi-vitamin, and we go through about 1.5 chews a day. Apparently some cats will just eat the chew by itself, but Trix won't. Of course no matter what, it has to be given with food, since it's purpose is to bind out the phosphorous!

@tiffmaxee - I hadn't heard of it before, either, but my vetty recently recommended it for Trix after I told her that there were times that Trix would reject the traditional binder powder. It has worked really well for Trix. At this point, we don't take Trix to the vet unless we absolutely have to since every time we go she gets really sick so I can't say I know what her actual phosphorous values are now (they were almost 6.0 when we started this binder), but her appy and how she acts and feels have improved significantly since we started this binder.
