Good Morning, Everyone,

Rusty is starting out green. He ate all of his nighttime food and woke us up this morning seconds before the "ducks" sounded the alarm. I used a MJ syringe from one of the old batches I had stashed away. Today I'm going to call Monoject and complain about batch 136133. 10 good syringes out of a total of 200 (2 boxes) is not acceptable! In the meantime I'm going to do some experimenting with the calipers. Rusty had a good test, shot, Wellness turkey breakfast, and a weigh-in: he gained 4 oz. from the last weighing about a week ago and is now up to 17 lbs., 3 oz. I find this hard to understand, since he has not been eating more. He definitely needs more exercise. Hopefully this is just a fluctuation. He played a little this morning. Now he is chillaxing in his basket.

Showers here today and it is warm and muggy. Today is a chores day. We have a houseguest arriving tomorrow and I really must clean! Also a trip to the landfill is on the agenda.

Wishing you all a good day,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 5/22 Rusty AMPS 87

Hi Ella, bummer on the syringes. Those must be a new batch. I still have the MJ's with the NDC # 8881-609145 from ADW. Some lines are definitely uneven. Good luck with the call to MJ; I'll be interested in what they have to say. Nice green for Rusty's start of the day.

Re: 5/22 Rusty AMPS 87

Hi guys .. oh I agree, what a nice start to the day! So frustrating on only getting 10 good syringes out of two boxes .. that is just unacceptable .. I hope you get somewhere with them .. Have a great day!

Re: 5/22 Rusty AMPS 87

Beautiful greens for Rusty this morning! 4 oz isn't much, right Rusty? It could be the moon phases or a little extra treat or two. He is a Maine Coon so he is probably just big boned. Poor guy.

Good luck getting all your cleaning done and have fun at the landfill. Have a great day Ella!!

Re: 5/22 Rusty AMPS 87

Morning! I do so love green amps! Well done Rusty, keep that surf going. :-D

wow on the 17 lbs. I am almost afraid to weigh Mannie... even though I should. He just feels heavier - probably not a good thing. :? I think our boys need to get back to their lap swimming.

Good luck with the call to monojet. I look forward to hearing what they have to say.

Enjoy those chores. How nice to be having a friend come for a visit! YAY!!

Re: 5/22 Rusty AMPS 87

Woohoo, Rusty!   Maybe his BG is lower and he is absorbing more food? We ordered some calipers but they haven't arrived yet. We are saving bad syringes to test. Our lot number is 201031, typical MJs, about 1 out of 3 are good. :-x

Re: 5/22 Rusty AMPS 87

Just got off the phone with Monoject. They are sending me two boxes from two different plants. They are also sending me a sharps container to send back some opened sample bad syringes from Lot 136133, and an envelope to send back ones that are still in their individual envelopes. So we'll see what happens. I did not tell them that the syringes were used by a cat; I said they were for my 10-year-old, who is on a very low dose and that it was impossible to draw a correct dose when--owing to the base of the needle not reaching the zero line--one winds up with more insulin than the prescribed dose. I told them that we have been using these Monojects for 2 years and that we have never before had syringes where the base of the needle did not reach the zero line. The customer-support guy wrote it all down (I heard him typing).
Luckily, I have bunches of MJ syringes from other batches because we have some stashed in Rusty's various travel kits. I also have 2 boxes of 30-gauge MJs that I never used because we switched to 31 gauge last summer. The 30-gauge syringes in these boxes are all just fine. I'm going to save them for the time when/if Rusty's dose gets really small!!

I'm going to start to learn to use the calipers soon, when I have some "free" time!

Re: 5/22 Rusty AMPS 87, more on MJ syringes

Darn...I was trying to get this info to you before you called but we have three people with nonshootable numbers this morning. Sorry. I'm going to PM you the contact info for the person who has been working this for me. It's better to contact her directly. I went the route you did to start with and yes, they did all that but then they totally dropped it. The person I am talking to actually really DOES care.

I was sent (by MJ) two new boxes of a different lot....still the same issue with the needle. I've had to relearn how to draw with these syringes to get them to fill consistently in the hub. I used to draw slowly. Now, I draw faster and smoothly and it seems to consistently fill the hub to the point of the end of the needle. In other words...it is flat across there. If I draw and I get one of those lopsided bubbles...I toss and start over. However, I'm not really sure how much, if any, of the insulin in the hub they get. It has been my understanding that the "dose" that is measurable goes from whatever unit marking to where the zero line "should" line up with the plunger when the plunger is pushed all the way in. When I got these bad batches of syringes and started using my calipers, I have not noticed that Gracie's numbers changed....in other words, I don't think it was resulting in more insulin.

When I give her the shot and insert the syringe, I push down hard on the plunger and hold it for about 5-10 seconds. When I draw it out, I release the pressure on the plunger and then push hard again to make sure there is no extra drop on it that should be going into her.

There is no way to measure how much is in the hub and because sometimes the hub size can vary as well, I really don't think that is part of the measurable insulin. I measure from where the plunger rests against the top or needle side of the syringe, to my dose. So to start with....I got a perfect syringe...the zero line and the needle side of the plunger matched up perfectly under my magnifying glass; the unit markings were all clear and uniform. I measured the distance with my calipers to 1u and that became my base dose measurement. Because Gracie is so sensitive, I get tiny drops and so I can dial in 7 drops per .5u (I think Ann gets 5). By experimenting, I determined that each of my drops results in a change in .07mm on my calipers. So then I calculated my doses down from there. 1u=1.43 mm; sk1u=1.37mm; f.75u=1.3mm; c.75u=1.23mm and so on.

I know this photo isn't great but it gives you some idea of where I take my measurements to/from. You can see in the photo that the zero line is below where it should be. When I measure for a dose, I actually have the calipers on top of the syringe but I couldn't do that and take a good photo so I put them to the side. Liz suggested using the "shoulder" that juts out a bit but in measuring distances, the width between the shoulder and where the zero line should be is inconsistent. It takes a bit of practice to consistently get the calipers lined up but I take my time and check and recheck. Now, I can use every syringe because it does not matter where the unit markings are. I don't even look at them anymore except that I always draw my dose...line up with 1u, then take off my drops, and then measure with the calipers.

Re: 5/22 Rusty AMPS 87, more on MJ syringes

Rusty's look marvelous!!! Hoping for a wonderful surf for you both today.

I totally understand with regard to the inconsistency of the syringes. I've never used MJ syringes, and even with the Relions I have some inconsistent ones, too. I've had to abandon my dosing of fats and skinnys and go with the 1/4 units because of them. I can't correctly dose a fat and skinny if the syringes aren't properly sitting where they need to be before you draw. I hope that you're able to find some better ones. Relions are pretty good, though, and you can get rid of the bubbles easily with them, too. I get mine at Walmart.

Re: 5/22 Rusty AMPS 87, more on MJ syringes

Rusty!!! 4 oz???? Sounds like someone needs to take it easy on the eating at all the parties, tsk tsk! Hopefully now that its nice out and Rusty can get out more he'll start losing some of those extra pounds.

Syringe problems huh? I use the BD syringes and i would guess 1/3 of them are wonky and i'm not able to use them. Great news that MJ is willing to send you some new ones and hopefully the callipers will work wonders for you.

Very nice AMPS for Rusty, keep up the good work big guy ;-)

Re: 5/22 Rusty AMPS 87, +5.5 66, +9 69, PMPS 95. syringes co

Hi again,
Great, detailed info., Marje. Thank you. Thank you!!

Rusty has been surfing green all day. Not much energy (it's humid, warm, and he's in his old numbers, to which he has become unaccustomed). But he perked up this evening with his 95 PMPS. I fed him a very little FF T&G mixed in with BG turkey at both lunch and +9 snack, just to keep him from doing anything drastic. It seems to have worked.

Off to visit condos. I spent the day cleaning, shopping, and driving Edward to his various appointments, so I need to see what's going on in LL.

bbl,

Ella & Rusty
