Hi

Harley & Davidson were crazy playing last night and running up and down the stairs. Davidson being so big thinks he's as fast as Harley and when running up, as he often does he bangs into the step and usually hits his throat area (which is a concern on its own) but this time the thud was loud and when I looked down there he was with Harley sitting nice and quiet. I knew something wasn't right and sure enough he knocked out his right side upper and lower fang. Two big holes where the teeth were, not bleeding but blood in the hole. He was fine otherwise and after some treats went to bed.

This morning he is good, but I'm taking him to the Vet to make sure there are no broken parts on the lower tooth as I can't see it too well and maybe get some AB's so there is no infection.

QUESTION - cannot find where the thread that talks about dental and WHAT NOT TO GIVE to Diabetic cats..........I don't want Davidson to go out of remission so please let me know asap as taking him around lunch time.......

Thanks and BTW - yesterday's post didn't get published for some reason and at +8 he was 64 - then the goofball goes and plays tough Guy with Harley and breaks two teeth............go figure.

Re: 5/22 DAVIDSON DENTAL QUESTION

I think you're referring to drugs. The drugs you don't want prescribed under 99% of the circumstances are Metacam (meloxicam) which is an antiinflammatory pain med and Convenia, which is an antibiotic that's given as an injection and lasts for 2 weeks.

Re: 5/22 DAVIDSON DENTAL QUESTION

Thanks Sienne............

If Davidson has to go under to remove a broken leftover (if it's there as I cannot see the bottom one) then is he okay with the usual drugs they give to knock them out? Funny, he didn't need drug to knock himself out last night - maybe he should try that move again LOL........

Re: 5/22 DAVIDSON DENTAL QUESTION

Hi guys .. wow, that must of been some crash davidson had last night! I sure hope his teefies came out clean and he doesn't have to go under at all .. have a great day guys!

Re: 5/22 DAVIDSON DENTAL QUESTION

What!?! Davidson is doing his own dentals now? ohmygod_smile

Sorry you have to take him to the vet, but better that you find out now if he broke off a tooth and needs to get it extracted. They'll probably need to do mouth xrays to see if part of the tooth is still in there.

Re: 5/22 DAVIDSON DENTAL QUESTION

For anesthesia, the best is gas. They come out of it quickly and don't have side effects. I hope it isn't needed.

Re: 5/22 DAVIDSON DENTAL QUESTION

Silly Davidson! I hope he'll be OK.

Here is Sienne's post on dentals. You'll have to make sure the AB's don't contain sugar, often the liquid ones do. And you might need a probiotic for the side effects of any AB.

Re: 5/22 DAVIDSON DENTAL QUESTION

Thanks EVERYONE...............he is soooooooooooo silly!!

Vet said at this time xrays are not needed as most teeth break off at the gum line and it is a clean break. Nobody in this town has a specific xray machine so we will monitor him for a few days and see how he does. I have a weeks supply of AB's which he used for his UTI and have no side effects on him. There is a bit of inflammation at his gum and that should go down, most likely from the hit and break..........he's sitting here purring away as if nothing is wrong expect he does not know that when he now sticks his tongue out it will flop over to one side.............silly man he is.

All good for now and the Vet said he's in good shape and doing well OTJ.

Shawna

Well, I can clearly see the root of the tooth in Davidson's mouth now that the blood is gone and he lets me look closely. I spoke to the owner of the Vet Clinic just now and I'm taking Davidson in tomorrow as I don't want to delay things. Because the tooth broke off below the gum line they have to cut the gum on each side and remove the root and then stitch him up. They said they would put him on TREMEDOL pain killers - is that okay (maybe spelled wrong)?????

Also, they asked if I wanted blood work done since he is 12 yrs old...........he just had blood work done in Nov. when he got the DX for Diabetes..........

Do you think I should get it done again as the Vet said there is always a risk in surgery due to his age. He has no bacteria infections, no UTI and had no issues since the last blood work and is now OTJ............comments please.

I'm taking Davidson in tomorrow at 8:30 and he will be there for the day.

Thanks

Shawna

most of the time if bloodwork is more than a couple of weeks old, vets will require a new round anyway. since it's been 6 months, i'd probably do it.

you don't need a fructosamine, however. that'll save you a few bucks.

they're saying Tramadol, i'd guess. It's a drug that works on the nerves to calm them. I haven't heard of anyone using it for a dental. We tried it with punkin because cats with acro have pain, but it didn't help him. The typical painkiller that most of us would use for post-dental work (or anything else painful) is Bupe (buprinex or buprinorphine). That's a narcotic, i think, and it is easily given. You squirt it under the lip or in the cheek pocket and it absorbs through the mucous membranes. We've used that one quite a bit and i'd probably ask for it. The only side effect that i've seen is that a cat can be kind of stoned on it and act a bit loopy. if you see that, then you reduce the dose slightly.

Good luck tomorrow. Let us know how things go! we'll be thinking of you and Davidson.

Thanks Julie..........they said the drug was a pain killer but I will ask about the other you suggest and Davidson is good with pills as he eats them like candy. I'll inquire about the blood work, but H&D are indoor cats, no illnesses in this house or ever any sick people (I'm sick in a different way - haha) so not sure if he needs it - I have his records and will take them so they can see what he was before. I'll be here with him constantly so if he's a bit drugged up that will be okay as I'll just sleep downstairs with them so there is no risk of him falling down the stairs...........

Rgds

Hi Shawna, amazing what we'll do for our babies (you sleeping downstairs to ensure Davidson doesn't fall down the stairs). I hope all goes well for Davidson and that everything heals up nicely. Our vet requires blood work and check ups every 6 months for senior pets. It's probably not a bad idea to check Davidson's blood work before the surgery. Good luck, Shawna.

I missed Davidson's condo yesterday...WOW....poor little guy! Sending lots of good dental vines, and FWIW, I would do the blood work, too. Please let us know how he's doing!

Hi Everyone..............

Well, the Vet said Davidson is a big teddy bear and very spoiled...........YUP!!! That's my Guy!!!

All went well, I did the blood work as wanted to make sure all was good since he's fresh into remission..........they cut both sides of the gum to get the root out and made a flap, stitched him up and gave him the buprenorphine recommended........he said it is a good product and have to give it to him in prefilled syringes twice a day for 3 days, as well as the AB's.........I'll see how the cut is healing in a few days and he just might need more AB's but will look at that in 6 days when it's used up.

When I picked Davidson up at 4pm (16:00) he was already completely awake and purring and not groggy at all. Cried a bit on the way home as hates the cage and car since he and Harley never go out other then recently for dental and the diabetes thing (mobile home vets) so that was understandable............came home and ate and it's stayed down so far...........I brought one litter box up from the basement and sure enough he walks past it and goes downstairs unassisted and pee's in the usual place. Guess I don't have to sleep downstairs and more then likely he and Harley will be snuggled in my bed tonight.

I did a BG test at ambg today but since I forgot to do it before I got the cage out, I already stressed Davidson as he saw the cage and knew something was up so I got a 109...........at 5pm (17:00) after he ate and was home 30 minutes I did another test +9 72 so he seems adjusted and back on track. Just to be sure I will test several times per day randomly over the next week in order to catch any highs related to the dental work.

THANKS for your thoughts...........

Shawna

so glad it went well!

great plan to check his BGs - if he develops an infection post-surgery you may see it first in his blood sugar.

you might want to give him probiotics to prevent diarrhea from the antibiotics. punkin had a lot of trouble with that. Fortiflora is the typical one. some people give plain unflavored yogurt (punkin wouldn't eat that). some people give people probiotics - i had some Accuflora that worked on punkin and i've heard others recommend ReNew Life Ultimate Flora Probiotic here. Sienne has said that one is available at GNC and Whole Foods stores.

you'll want to go easy on the food for the rest of the day. a teaspoon or so every half hour to make sure he doesn't vomit on his mouth owie. the anesthesia can slow down gut motility, which increases the chance of vomiting.

I'm glad the dental work went well. How much bupe did they put in the syringes? If he is too groggy you can give a smaller dose. Usually 2ml is enough and vets often give at least 3. It won't hurt to give the larger dose but it can space them out.

Thanks Julie;

Davidson is still doing well, no vomiting at all - he grazes so eats when he wants and being 16 lbs and fasting since yesterday he certainly ate his share and it's still in him so not worried there. Also, the AB's he got were the same from his UTI and they worked well for him, he was them yesterday and will commence again tomorrow...........He's jumping up onto my desk and the usual spots he hangs out in. The only change is with Harley who is growling at Davidson as the scent of other animals is still with Davidson and Harley is very protective..........that will change by later today as Harley realizes it's his brother...........haha.

I'll update tomorrow - thanks to all for your thoughts,

Shawna

I am glad the dental went well. You can also get the Renew Ultimate probiotic in the organic refrigerated section of Canadian Superstore if you find you need it. They don't carry it in Canadian Whole Foods stores.

Buprenorphine comes in different concentrations so often people will start with what the vet suggests and decrease if too much. Since Davidson is a big boy he might be OK.

Glad to hear Davidson's dental went well! Oopsie on breaking a tooth while playing rompa-stompa! Hope he's feels good and is up and ready to blast around again soon.
