5/22/14 New food, great content

Today I went out and bought "Newman's Own" organic canned food. Has anyone had any experiences with this brand ?? To my surprise, she LOVES it. Maybe this will help her levels. Keep your fingers crossed for her. please, all. I will let you know.

You really can't go by content. You need to base what to feed on the carb count. Newman's is around 10 carbs. It's on Dr. Lisa's list on page 14.

ARGH. i just wrote a post out and it didn't post! so annoying.

let's see - basically i said it's good that you increased the dose, and the increase is in line with the protocol but it's a big increase. that's 50% more insulin that she's getting, so i want to encourage you to get in more tests to make sure she doesn't tank with it.

also, i fed punkin and anya some of Newman's Own because punkin needed low phosphorus for his kidneys, but with Mom Mom's numbers being so high, i would stick to the Fancy Feast you were giving her before. Those run in the 4-5% range. Newman's adds rice to the food and the rice is a source of carbs, which Mom Mom definitely doesn't need in her regular meals.

Also Newman's Own seems to have changed the formulas like a lot of other foods and we don't know what the new carb % is. They've changed the name slightly (adding "the Second Generation") and have added a line of grain free foods too. I would contact the company and ask for the "As Fed" numbers for all the canned cat foods. You You need to get the As Fed infor for Protein, Fat, Ash Fiber and Moisture. Carbs would be great if they have the info, but can be calculated if you have all the others. WE can help you to recalculate the info they give you to get the Metabolized energy car% that we use for comparison. It would be great if they could give you the Phosphorus values too as many FD cats are also CKD.

I was giving her the Fancy feast chicken & liver (which she LOVES), however, her numbers went high and STAYED that way for 4 days. The only choice I had was to switch canned food. Which brang me to the Newmans Best Organic. I am open for suggestions.

i don't think her high numbers are from the food. The Newman's carbs are higher than the Fancy Feast.

I think her blood sugar is high for reasons unrelated to her food.
