Wow...I knew I hadn't posted in awhile but had no idea it had been so long!!

I have been busy though.....DM has been in the hospital for the last week in CHF.....I still don't know what happened with her though because the day before, she was really good....Not SOB and walking out on the patio and up to the Nutrition site and just having a really great day....the next morning she was drowning in her own tissues and I had to call the ambulance to take her to the hospital. 8 hours from perfectly fine to terribly sick...I just don't get it. CHF usually doesn't work like that unless there's something else going on like a cold.

Found out today that they are planning on discharging her tomorrow and for now, I think she'll be going to the nursing home for awhile....at least she's got the "3 midnights as an inpatient" done so Medicare will pay for the nursing home! It really bugged me though when the social worker called to make arrangements for her....she mentioned having her in hospice which means that her doctor thinks she has less than 6 months ......something about that just really upset me. I mean I know none of us are guaranteed a tomorrow, much less an 87 year old, but nobody has ever put a "time limit" on her. Of course it really doesn't mean anything...she could live many more years, but it still bugs me

Miss China is back on Lantus as of 3 days ago....she was starting to trend up a little on the Basaglar and since I didn't have another pen to try and don't know how long the Basaglar lasts (I thought it should last as long as Lantus but have no way of knowing for sure) so since I just got 5 new pens and she'd given the Basaglar a fair shot for 6 weeks, it was time to put her back on the Lantus. I think I can safely say that if we have a new person show up on the message board using Basaglar, we're perfectly fine to use it exactly the same as Lantus. It's also $25 less for a box of 5 at Marks Marine Pharmacy compared to Lantus for people who are really tight on money (but of course they'll need to get a script)

For now, I'm not worrying too much about China's numbers since we're having to establish a new depot (and I'm busy enough with DM without having to worry about what Miss China is up to!) so hopefully as things get back to more normal, she'll be back to an "all green" kitty! I really can't complain about any of her numbers as they're still all under 120 but you all know how much I love that green!!

I have tried to keep track of you guys as much as I had time for, but usually that just meant skimming a few condo's at night before collapsing into bed!!

Oh Chris, you have a full plate with your mom and worrying about her. I don't know a whole lot about the Medicare system (yet, but I am sure I will know more eventually with my mom ) but, I am thinking that if the social worker wants to label her as hospice, it might be to her advantage for the care that will be given to her under Medicare. Heck, she can prove them wrong and live beyond 6 months! Hopefully someone with more experience with it will chime in.

China is looking good and glad that you had the Lantus to fall back on since you saw her trending upwards. I was surprised to read that it was only 25 bucks cheaper a box of 5 than the Lantus. I thought it was appreciably cheaper.
 
Hi Chris, That must have been very upsetting to see you mom go from fine to awful overnight. I hope that she will be doing well now. Sending vines.

I, too, thought the Basaglar was much less expensive than Lantus. In any event, I'm glad Deputy China is back on Lantus and know that she will get her depot in order in short order.

It's an "either/or" at this point....she can either go into the nursing home or get hospice care....the thing about hospice (other than that "time limit") is that there would still only be someone at her apartment maybe 4 times a week for an hour or two.....a nurse comes once a week and an aide comes the other days to help with bathing, etc......it still wouldn't be 24 hour care and for now, I think that's what she needs.

IF she gets to go back home to her apartment, hospice might be an option then (since we don't have to pay for it) but I've heard both good things about hospice and bad things.

I'm going to talk to the guy from the hospice company more about it tomorrow so at least I have a better understanding of what they offer and what they don't

They're about the same price with Basaglar being a little cheaper (here in the US) .....I compared prices when we first started

The big thing is that some human insurance companies have taken Lantus off their "preferred drug" list so won't pay for it....they'll only pay for Basaglar
 
Chris, I'm sorry your mom went into CHF. It can happen out of nowhere with leaky valves. I hope she gets her strength back quickly. Don't allow hospice until you are ready. Once on it they really won't let you see her regular doctors for heart issues. We were told a different story and made promises that didn't materialize. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

That's one of the things that concerned me....He said something about "we pay for all her meds" and I was thinking, "Yeah, but who's prescribing them?".....I've heard people say that they put their loved ones on morphine and just waited (although he said they didn't do that) and I couldn't help but think they must have their own doctors who prescribe the meds that THEY want them on, not necessarily the ones that are best for them

China looks great back on Lantus. You were very brave to pave the way by trying the Basaglar out on her!
 
So sorry about your DM Chris. Sending prayers and vines for all of you! One thing about hospice to ask is that if you are not satisfied with their care, can you immediately stop.
 
All very enlightening about Hospice. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about it. One of my friends was a hospice nurse. I will have to talk to her when and if the time comes about these concerns. Good luck Chris with DM with whatever you decide.
