Hello cat people! Long time, no post. Buster is doing pretty well. I have had to increase him up to 2u but he's not showing terrible numbers (ss needs updating, sorry). I just took him in for his annual geriatric exam. They were able to pick off some tartar that I couldn't get and his blood work came back solid with no concerns - yay!

My only concern is with his arthritis. He has slowed down quite a bit in the last 6 weeks or so and he has some weakness in the back end. He's 16/17 years old, so it's not too surprising. The vet said there is a new anti-inflammatory we could try called Onsior (robenacoxib). Since his kidneys are still strong I'd like to give it a shot. Anyone had any experiences with this stuff? She gave me 2 tabs as a trial. I am waiting until this Sunday to try it, as I won't be home enough to observe him until then. Of course, I'll be researching...

Hope all is well in LL Land! Think of you all every day, hoping for the best for all!

Hi Tara! Scritches to Buster.

Onsior is recommended for post surgical pain, for a maximum of three days. It even says that on the manufacturers website. It hasn't been tested for any longer in older cats. Georgia's Simon just tried it for arthritis and stopped it after one dose because of what it did to his GI system. Check out the 2015 AAHA/AAFP Guidelines for the Management of Pain in Cats and Dogs. Here's what it says about Onsior and DJD (degenerative joint disease):
Robenacoxib is a CoX-2 selective NSAiD approved for surgical pain in cats. it has not been studied for either feline DJD or in older cats but there are long-term safety data in young cats (ie, 5 x the recommended dosage for 6 months and 10 x the recommended dosage for 6 weeks
I've lately been trying Duralactin with Neko, and it's showing some promise. It's a more natural anti-inflammatory.

Hi Tara!

We've missed you and Buster. Glad to hear he's doing well, but sorry about the arthritis. I can relate! I don't know anything about the Onsior, just wanted to say hello. Here's some healing vines for those back legs.

Grrrr - is Duralactin something you can use in conjuction with Cosequin? Poor Boo. The rest of his lil cat body is doing so well. I would like to provide some comfort to his aching joints.

Neko's acupuncture vetty also suggests Hyaflex, which Neko is taking, but I didn't notice as much difference with it as with Duralactin. Apparently Hyaflex is best in combination with Cartrophen (or Adequan). Shop around for best prices on Duralactin. Check first with your vet, there are some contraindications for Duralactin.

I did see a lady who has been giving her cat Onsior 3x a week for 2 yrs with no issues. It doesn't really seem like it's something I want to try, though. I ordered up some Duralactin and I will try to contact my vet tomorrow. I tried Hyaflex at one point and didn't notice a difference. We aren't on the Adequan anymore, as it seemed to stop working at some point. I bet extra snuggles will help...
