It's been more than 72 hours so I don't think this is still a bounce. I would think about increasing the dose, though.

Did you have a question about feeding?

Poor little man is hungrier than ever lately. He is a big cat, weighing in at 18lbs (clearly not starving). The vet said she would rather see him at 15lbs. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how to feed him as he continues to cruise consistently in the 200/300 range where I know he really isn't getting any of his needed nutrients. Currently I am feeding him three-ish times a day (been trying different things and nothing seems to abate how hungry he always seems). He gets a full can of classic FF in the morning at shot time. When I get home (anywhere from 3p-6p) I give him half a can, the other half he gets at his night shot time and then I give him another whole can at bed time. In the past (and all the way through our original run on insulin) he would eat a few bites at a time and graze through until he got fed again. However, within the last week or so, I've noticed he is licking his bowl clean immediately, and bugging me within a few hrs to eat again. Would giving him another can during the day be bad? I half suspect he went back on insulin when he chuncked out and perhaps put on some weight. But if he isn't getting enough at these high BG numbers would it be bad to feed him some more? Or is he just playing major head games with me cuz when he acts like a starving maniac I feed him, therefore, he keeps working it. ohmygod_smile

The rough approximation of a kitty's required calories based on Dr. Lisa's formula (calories per day = 13.6 x ideal weight + 70) would be 274 calories per day. If you base the calculation on Tiki's current weight, the calories = 314. I'd actually suggest you take a look at Dr. Lisa's information on weight loss so you can reduce Tiki's calories in a safe way.

What I would do is spread his food out more. Rather than giving him a whole can, split it up and feed more often. He may think he's eating more and the frequent meals may have 2 positive effects: it should stoke his metabolism and it will help to support his pancreas by not making it work overly hard. It may mean either using a timed feeder or making "catsickles" so there's food throughout the day.

That's a good place to start. Once you feed the new calories for a week, weigh him. If he's up, very slightly reduce the calories. Go a week and then weight again.

What nice photos of Tiki!!! I just got an automatic feed to help me even out his food since I work in the day time. I'm hoping it will help flatten Sweetie's curves; this was my first full day using it.

I hope Tiki goes back to being OTJ soon!

I've recently been thinking about getting an autofeeder. He had been so good for so long just grazing on his own throughout the day, but lately his bowl has been licked clean after a few mins. Initally, the dog was accused of theft, but as the days went on I could see it wasn't her, it really was Tiki. I hadn't thought of the ease of steady food on his pancreas before but it could definitely be another factor of him NOT BUDGING from the 2/300's as of late. I gave him an extra can of FF today and he's been pretty mellow throughout the day. Normally, it's cuff, cuff, cuff, cuff, mrowl, mrrrowl, mrrrrrrowl, MEOW MEOW MEOW, eyes bugging out, intense stare (translated as FOODFOODFOODFOODFOODFOODFOODNOWNOWNOWNOWNOW).

My boy is a scratcher more than a talker, but his eyes get really big and he stares hard when he wants food. He's also taken to jumping up and eating from the bowls of whatever the kids leave out. I've got train the kids better!
