thanks for the wild birthday party for punkin yesterday! he enjoyed all the forbidden foods and everyone's birthday greetings!

wow did i ever get the look when he got done eating that whopping teaspoon of watered-down food this morning! he kept on purring, but he ran back over to look at me like "you made a mistake, mom! there's not enough FUDS!" his dental is scheduled in 2 hours, though, so the vet didn't want him to eat. she ok'd a bite so we could give him his insulin easily. we gave him 1/2 dose.

i'm taking him to a specialist for the dental this time - she's a board-certified veterinary dentist, one of just 2 in Oregon certified for small animals. She's got the dental x-ray equipment and all the hoo-haw needed. i'm trusting he'll do ok, but am a little bit nervous. he's been anesthetized 5 times in the past year without trouble, so i *think* he'll do ok. Last year he had a post-dental infection that dragged on for nearly 2 months, probably from retained roots. i took him to her for a consult last year after all of that. i hope this year is uneventful.

this vet dentist has a regular practice in a neighboring town as well, and she told me because of her experience with punkin, she diagnosed a cat in her practice with acro. small strides.

my notes include no metacam, no convenia shot & use a smaller anesthesia tube because of his acromegaly. we got his heart checked out a couple of weeks ago & i'm taking all the lab results with me so she'll have those as well.

he's sprawled on the bare floor now, purring away. what a guy! cat_pet_icon

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental

Julie, we're sending good Vetty vines to Punkin. It looks like you have a great Vet to do the dental and have all your bases covered. It's normal to worry, but Punkin will be fine except for withholding the fuds. :-| Let us know how everything goes smoothly today.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental

Sending good dental vines for our purry punkin today....And calming ones for you, Julie.

Keep us posted,k?

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental

Sounds like you're as prepared as you can possibly be!! Sounds like you're a Type A personality, same as me. I'm sure Punkin will be fine and I'm sending lots of good thoughts your way!!!!

Have a great day!!

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental

You are a pro with the dental prep! How wonderful to have a dental specialist too. We dread the day Zener needs another dental.

Sending heaps of dental vines to punkin and adult beverages to you. ;-)

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental

Good luck today Julia and Punkin. He'll do just fine. I feel bad we can't explain why we are doing this to them. I wonder what they'd say if they could talk and he could share with Anya.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental

Sending great vetty vine for Punkin. You are sooooooo well prepared. You are so lucky to have a specialist!

Punkin, KTSS will be waiting when you get home. Mannie 's got a new whole body Fresh Mown Grass Wrap to get rid of the vetty smell! -- Tess

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental

More good dental vines on the way to you, Punkin. KTSS will see you later.

Good preparation, Julie. I hope all will go smoothly.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental

Thinking of punkin and you today. I know the dental will go fine but what about the CPC? Did Anya make it by herself? :-D Poor punkin not getting his full breffis, he has my complete sympathy. Very cool that your vet was able to diagnose an acro cat. Waiting for your update.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental

Sending Punkin good dental wishes today. And lots of good food for when he comes home with shiny teeth. (((Punkin)))

Sorry I missed the party yesterday. Happy Birthday handsome Punkin!
I loved the story of how you found each other. Beautiful!

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

*whew*

first things first: punkin & anya both made it into the CPC, liz! i let him finish hers - it was just 2 crumbs and, well, you know, i figured it wouldn't matter to anyone except punkin!

he's doing fine. out of anesthesia, tube out, looking around. i can go get him in 2 hrs.

she took out his 2 upper canines - they were seriously bulging around his gums. she's shown me that was beginning last year - i think she called it alveolar something. almost looked like small peas under the gums, right at the top of the canines. so they're gone, but everything else just cleaned. she said there was the very, very beginning of some resorption in the back but so small that she wouldn't recommend taking out the teeth for that. so . . . i followed her recommendation. she was very tolerant of my "no metacam, no convenia, smaller breathing tube, please give me clindamycin pills not liquid, blah blah" that i went through.

he knew something was up when we got to the vet's. crawled back up onto my shoulder & under my hair. but ya gotta do these things.

yes, patty, i am quite type A. i'd like to lose some of it, but you know . . . we are the way we are. ohmygod_smile

when i got the estimate, i nearly choked, closed my eyes and signed. i've put off my own dental work (i'm supposed to get an implant) but i pay for punkin's. this is what credit cards are for, right? ;-) i have this strong need to give the little guy whatever he needs. but he's worth it - that's why. cat_pet_icon

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

I know what you mean about the money aspect. I need to go get my own teeth cleaned and I haven't had a physical exam in years (haven't seen a doctor in YEARS), because no insurance. But, I saved and saved to finally get Champ's teeth cleaned next month. I already spoke to them that if he ends up needing any extractions they're going to let me make payments....thank goodness!! Whenever I have any money left over at the end of the month, I buy test strips or another pen of insulin...just in case the next month I'm short on money. I'm so glad people here understand that my cat has to come first these days!!!

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

So glad Punkin made it though his dental okay. Was it Dr. Van that did the surgery? She did Spock's dental and because of his heart murmur, used anesthesia that she could reverse quickly if she needed to and monitored him very, very closely. She is awsomely good! (but expensive, I know :o ) And she's used to me telling her what not to give my cats.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

So glad Punkin made it through all okay minus two big teeth. Ouch ouch ouch.

Henry's dental was 1300 including blood work. All he had was cleaning and three small extractions. Ouch again. I figure I'd pay that in clothes or diapers if he was a human child. He's probably a lot cheaper than a human.

Give your big boy a hug and a kiss from me when you get him home.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

SO GLAD punkin did well at his dental--Please be sure you get pain meds for him, preferably buprenex
which is given by dropper inside cheek--It really helpd my two when they had dentals..
Punki, you will have the cleenest toofies of all the kitties today!! Kitties are planning to bring you soup!!
Be well Love & Hugs from us!!

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

Yah I'd want bupe too if I had two canines pulled. Henry was on it for three itty bitty teeth. I would check on dosing before you give it though. I gave Henry .4 units and he turned into a paranoid squirrel and was up all night. At .2 units (he's 18lbs) he was normal and content.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

You can also inject the Bupe SubQ. Spock's mouth hurt so bad I couldn't get near him to squirt. (well, I did once and he screamed like a banshee!)

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

i've given him bupe before - .2ml and he takes it fine. not dopey at all.

yes, dr van did it. i REALLY like her. you gotta trust people but oh, it's hard for me to turn him over to others. she inspires my confidence, though.

we could call me type A or we could call it what it is - i'm a bit of a control freak. last night i told my husband exactly how to stir the cornbread batter ohmygod_smile cuz i was taking punkin to the acupuncturist. even while i was telling him i knew what a stupid head i was. (but he did kinda overstir and it was the driest cornbread i've ever had. ) see? control freak. ;-)

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

So happy punkin did well with his dental today. I wish we had a specialist in our area, even though the vets say she is ok, but I wonder sometimes if she has pain from a tooth ache. I also do the same thing, I put off a dental for myself for about a year now, I just hate to spend the money for myself. Our kitties are helpless and depend on us to make the best choices for them, so I think they should come first. Nice to have a place to actually admit that.

Hope punkin doesn't have too much pain today, and you and he can relax now that it's over.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

Glad to hear everything went well.

And, Happy Belated Birthday Punkin!!! party_cat

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

Thanks for the update, Julie, and I'm really glad everything went well! And CPC to boot. :-D Now punkin don't overeat when you get home.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

got him home - lots of sweet head butts and even got my face washed when i picked him up! apparently i was FILTHY!  i think he recognizes the multiple turns of the road that end at our place. he hid under the seat, but when i pulled in the driveway, he was already out cuz he obviously knew we were home.

he's had a bite - not satisfying but he went back to anya's dish and decided what he'd left this morning was worthy of eating now that he's starving. i'll wait an hour and give another bite.

for the moment, he's laying on the floor purring like mad. crazy cat. :-D perhaps it's the drugs, although they said they didn't give him another post-anesthesia shot - i think it was something like nor-morphine? something in the morphine family that cats do fairly well with.

glad to have that done with for another year!

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

I am glad everything went well at the dentist for Punkin. I've been thinking about him all morning.

I should probably talk to my vet about a possible dental for Neko, and I'm another one who is probably overdue for my own. But this would be Neko's first so it's more important. This same vet took out an upper molar from Theo for free, when he was a resident at our local shelter.

I'm glad Punkin was able to get a little bit of food - I dread taking Neko to the vet without giving her breakfast first.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

Glad to hear all went well with the dental. I hope Punkin does well with his recovery this time. Have a evening Julie! (and too bad on the dry cornbread- that's the worst!  )

LOL!!! I`m like that when it comes to doing anything diabetes related for Ella. I usually have a hard time trusting others to give her the same care as I do but Greg proved himself the other day so I got nothin`on him now:)
I`m so glad Punkin`s dental went well. He must have some purdy chicklets to show off:)

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

Carolyn, that's a beautiful picture you put together of Punkin :-D I love the sparkles in the eyes especially

I'm so glad everything went well today, and Punkin is home where he belongs and purring up a storm. cat_pet_icon

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

Hi Julie, I'm glad Punkin's dental went well and hope he feels well soon. Sorry I missed his bday. Happy Belated Birthday, Punkin! We were at the vet too. No anesthesia tho, thank goodness.

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

So great tO hear that the dental went well and he is back home. I'm glad he got your face washed. You must have needed it. It's been a big week for the big guy. Have a great night!

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

Sorry....I've been out ALL day and missed Punkin's dental but he obviously survived it just fine without me

I'm so glad he is doing so well and things went well. He'll feel much better with out those bad teefies. I wonder if she said "buprenorphine"? That's another term for buprenex...it's similar/interchangeable.

I hope Punkin enjoys his drugs du jour.

You..controlling? I do not believe it. HOnestly...not at all. Have you looked at Gracie's SS lately? Now THAT'S controlling

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

Punkin, the KTSS will be along shortly with some soothing cimmamum smoothies for you. And guess what? If you put those teeth under your bed tonight, the kitty tooth fairy will bring you a nice present.

So glad to hear he is fine, Julie. He's a trooper!

Have a good evening,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 5/2 punkin amps 247 dental done - doing fine

i think all the drugs wore off by this evening. i had trouble getting the bupe in his cheek pocket. not sure if i missed entirely, cuz he seemed to swallow it. his eyes look like he feels just crummy. the vet told me i absolutely was not to lift up his lip because she had sutures there, and not until i tried to put the bupe in there did it occur to me that it's hard to see what you're doing if you don't lift his lip.

sigh.

he looks awful, but i'm trying not to worry. he did eat the normal evening routine.

i guess that's not too bad for having a half dose this morning. no purring, that's for sure.

thanks for the well-wishes and birthday wishes everybody. you guys are the best. i feel very grateful for each person here. :YMHUG:

Carolyn - is that really punkin? it does look like him - i'm amazed! the eye sparkles are adorable. thank you!

((((Julie)))) It's hard to see him not feeling well. It may take a couple of days. Definitely a good sign that he's eating.
Liz

Sending scritches for punkin, I'm sure he will bounce back in no time, I don't think it is physically possible for him to keep purrs in for too long
