So we didnt give him any supper last night because he barely touched his dinner. This morning it was pretty much untouched. He had eaten some of his breakfast but is really not excited by food as he usually is. He is drinking water.

I missed a call from the vet this morning so I called them back. They were asking how Mo is doing. I'm waiting for the vet to actually call me and hopefully i can take him in. I'm terrified tbh.

I have called in sick for work for my evening shift. There is no way I'm leaving Mo home alone.

oh katy :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Others will be by but I do know it would be good to test for ketones again.

Sending clarity and love to you all :bighug:

I am so sorry to hear this news. I don't know enough to give any advice, but I'm sending support your way. So glad you are not going to work. Hoping things turn around for you and Mo soon.

Katy, I know you have been told not to test his bg but it could be helpful to see what it is. Prayers. I hope he improves. Not eating worries me like it does you. :bighug:

I just tested him and @ 3.5 he's 311. Which is "normal" for him. Maybe he's got a sore tummy still. He is sticking out his tongue a lot more these days. Would that have anything to do with him not eating? I don't know. Still waiting for the call back from the vet. Waiting for him to pee so i can test for ketones.

Mo's skin is dry and flaky. He managed a piece of chicken then went back to lie down. Still hasn't peed yet. He likes to hold on for ages. I'll keep an eye on him and test when he heads to the litter box. I really need to have a shower but I worry the vet will call. I need to keep reminding myself that I need to look after myself too.

Still no call back from the vet. I just called them and they're still busy. Not sure if they can fit us in today. I've told them he's not eating in the hope that they will take us seriously.

Cats behave weirdly at the vet. Djoko was so sick in January 2020 (reoccurring pancreatitis episodes). One morning I said this is it, lets put him to sleep. He is suffering too much (vomiting, diarrhea, pain, not drinking, not eating) but within 48 hours, he was back to normal. I do not encourage persistence when the cat is suffering too much (you are the only person who can assess this) but please take a moment to make sure this is not just a bad phase. When he is gone, he will be gone forever. I wish you good luck and I hope this is nothing serious.

We are definitely going to wait. They are doing a urinalysis and blood test all under sedation. If it's treatable, we will continue. I am not taking this decision lightly. My heart is in so much pain.

Katy :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:. When in crisis mode, you tend to also be in shock, and your brain is working a mile a minute to process what you are hearing, while your heart is breaking into pieces at the thought that he's not well. Please let us know how we can help, even if it is a sounding board for info the vet tells you, or just to vent a little. I'm sorry Mo isn't acting like himself.

((((Katy and Tim)))). You are loving kitty parents. I hope that Mo is just temporarily feeling off and so it made him a bit aggressive. But know that we support you all. Sending many healing vines and light for Mo.

Katy and Tim:bighug::bighug::bighug:

If he is feeling nauseated he won’t want to eat. Ask about cerenia for nausea. They can give an injection which will last 24 hours and there are tablets you can take home to give him daily.
Ask about doing a Snap fPl to see if it is pancreatitis which is very treatable.
Mo attacking you could have been stress at the vet and feeling lousy from nausea and him wondering what is going on.
Sending many vines to Mo.

Thank you everyone. They are doing a snap fPL test, a urinalysis and putting him on fluids. They might be doing other things but I'm not sure. I haven't had any updates yet. Hopefully I hear from them soon
That sounds good Katy. I’m glad they have put him on fluids and done the snap fPL test.
We all understand how difficult and stressful it is for you at the moment and we are all very grateful to get updates from you........we worry about our FD family.:bighug:
I hope they increase the dose of the insulin back to where it was before while he is in there.
Did you manage to ask about nausea and cerenia?
Have you heard back from the specialist at all?
Sending a plane load of strong Aussie get well vines across the ditch to Mo.

I haven't been able to talk to them yet so haven't been able to ask questions regarding the Cerenia. And haven't heard from the specialist. They only work Tuesdays to Thursdays which is so annoying. Not going to hear from her until Tuesday. I am so so mad at all of this. Mo was stable before her stupid advice and now he's not. That's the last time I take her advice over the people here. I'm so sorry I didn't listen :(

Vet called. He has a strong positive for pancreatitis. She said there are also ketones in his system but his kidneys are working fine and he isn't low on electrolytes. He is on fluids, painkillers, anti-nausea meds, and antibiotics. The vet thinks the diarrhoea last week was possibly due to his pancreatitis OR that it flared up some inflammation in his pancreas. She's trying to get him to eat something. She said she will be giving him some wet royal canin sensitivity or the digestion one. At this point, I just want him to have something in his system. But he can't stay overnight as there will be no one there so they've suggested we escort him to the after hours vet for overnight monitoring. The after hours vet doesn't open until 7pm which is in 2 hours so we are waiting for the all clear before we pick him up and take him into the city.

I'm relieved and still worried. The vet said it seems like we caught it early. He has had pancreatitis before back in November which he recovered really well from, so hopefully he will get his fighting gloves on and overcome this as well.

We are really low in money at the moment after spending over $1000 at the specialist this week and I'm sure this is going to be expensive with the after hour vet. It's just not time to let him go. We are nearly there are figuring out what's wrong with him regarding the insulin resistance. This may mean we will have to postpone our wedding next year but I would do anything for him :arghh:

I'm glad you have some answers and a plan for Mo. If he was in pain, that would explain him lashing out.

Yes. Max had chronic pancreatitis for over 7 years. Once I learned how he reacted to treatments I knew what to do. He always became inappetent so at the first sign I gave hi ondansetron and cyproheptadine for a day to get him eating. If he seemed uncomfortable and in pain he got buprenorphine. I had it all on hand so I could treat at the first time of discomfort. When caught early his flares didn’t last long and he was only hospitalized once or twice for just 24 hours.

Thank you Elise, that's really promising. Mo will most likely require a diet change, he currently eats ziwipeak and fancy feast, should we take him off the fancy feast?

Djoko also has chronic pancreatitis but his change of diet helped him. It may be linked to IBD however. As Elise said, first sign is when Djoko lacks appetite and becomes too lethargic (cats like to sleep). I use gapabentin and cerenia. If he refuses to eat, I do not force him - I wait until its appetite come back (of course, too long can be dangerous but just to give his pancreas a break). I test him more for ketones while he eats less. Normally, he is fine within 24 hours. At the beginning, like I said earlier, his episodes were violent but they happen less and less so there is hope! As long as you have your pancreatitis kit home -you can handle this. Of course, if the cat does not drink for too long, he is likely to need sub q fluids at some points and a visit to the vet may be needed. Elise is very knowledgeable (Tiffmaxee).

I am so glad you know what the problem is with Mo and you have a plan. No wonder he lashed out........poor boy was most likely in pain.
And the ketones were caught early. The treatment he is on now sounds good.

Sheba also used to get pancreatic flares a couple of times a year. She was very food motivated so when she would not eat I knew it was pancreatitis. Sub Q fluids, a pain killer and cerenia used to settle her down quickly within a few days. Having the medications at home ready to use is key. She was only hospitalised once and that was the first time. After that it was a quick visit to the vet or I managed it at home.
:bighug::bighug::bighug: I hope you can manage to get some rest tonight.

Thank you everyone :) Just taken him from our vet to the after hours vet for monitoring. He did really well in the car ride! He managed to eat a quarter of a packet of wet food so that's positive! He did lash out at them while they were putting him in his cage to give to us but as soon as we had him he was relatively calm. Still panting, but they had put towels over the cage sprayed with Feliway so that would have helped. I doubt he's impressed to be spending the night in some foreign place, but it's for the best and the vet there at the after hours is BRILLIANT. She knew all about diabetes, questioned the jump from 9.5 units to 3 units, will be monitoring him for ketones throughout the night and will test his glucose. She said she wanted to get some gabapentin into him asap to help chill him out. Hopefully he won't be too much of a hassle overnight.

Thank you all so much for your support. Tim and I are eternally grateful to you and you've given us hope that we will be able to manage his pancreatitis at home. From the bottom of my heart, thank you thank thank you :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

So good to get that positive update. What a hero Mo is! Wonderful he ate for you. That’s a very good sign.
I’m sure he will settle down once there.
Great the after hours vet knows about FD. She sounds she knows what she’s doing, which is very reassuring.
I hope you can both get some sleep tonight.

Yes you will be able to manage the pancreatitis at home. It’s just a matter of being organised with the necessary medications etc and recognising when he’s having a flare. We can help you the first time....if he does get another attack.
We are very happy to be able to help you anytime.
:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Sending lots of hugs your way :bighug::bighug::bighug: You are doing everything for Mo. So glad to hear he has eaten on his own and there will be a knowledgeable vet looking after him overnight.

thinking of you all and sending many many vines.
:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
Mo's a fighter in more ways than one, hang in there little guy.
When George was in pain he really lashes out. This happened when he was poorly with his teeth. He gave the vet a nasty bite (through leather gauntlets) when she was trying to xray him before the dental, and he is usually very good about having stuff done to him.
So I can imagine the pain made Mo lash out.

Both of you are incredible Mama and Daddy Bean Mo is blessed to have you:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Katy, what an ordeal you've been through with Mo. I'm so sorry but so glad to hear you now know what is going on with him. Sending many prayers that his flare ends quickly and he is back to being himself. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
Yes, Butters has chronic pancreatitis. She was in the hospital for five days last time. I was taught to keep some meds at home so I can deal with it at the first sign of symptoms. I have on hand ondansetron & cerenia for nausea, gabapentin & buprenorphine for pain, and cyproheptadine for appetite stimulation. If this overnight vet is wonderful, then I personally would ask them to give you the meds he needs as well as some extra in case he flares up again. :bighug:.

I can’t tell you how happy I was to read your update. I’d be asking the brilliant vet if she knows a vet that understands diabetes well. You will definitely be able to handle Mo’s pancreatitis at home once it’s figured out what works for him. :bighug:

Thank you everyone! We have had no calls overnight from the after hours vet so that's good news! The vet said they only call if something happens so I'm happy to wake up with no missed calls :)

Off to pick him up in half an hour to take him to our normal vet for the day. It's going to be a lot of back and forth, poor guy. I'll start a new thread with an update once we've finished our taxiing services. ;)
