Hi Folks:

Well Scooter the carb stealer was at the Vet today. His bg was fine but this morning he decided to try and get at the pan on the stove top and walked over a hot burner to get to it. He is okay and we have some pain meds for his paw burn. He is resting now. ugh.

He has changed so much since removing the carbs from his life. He is no longer a loving old man he is more like a sneaky kitten that I can't trust. The worst part is he learned nothing as I found him back on the stove after the Vet. I got burner covers last week but they are only good if the burners are cooled. So far this month he has had pizza, veggie sticks, bread, pork chop, potato chips and yogurt. All of these things were stolen if one of us turned our backs.

So I am wondering if I should consider low carb kibble. We currently have a no kibble house hold with 13 cats.

As always thanks for your input.

Linda

i don't know - my image of kibble is that it's the devil's food! reading Dr. Lisa's site (the http://www.catinfo.org site) there are lots of reasons kibble is bad for cats, even if they aren't diabetic.

i love your description of scooter as a kitten - i remember when you described him as acting like an old man. what great news!

it's so thrilling that' he's continuing to do well in spite of stealing food at every opportunity! my kittens are the same way - Frodo, the orange one, especially. OHMYGOSH - today i came home from work and he'd swiped a baggy of tea off the kitchen counter that someone at work had given me. i found the tea in the laundry room scattered everywhere. i know it was Frodo because he's such a hoover. i wondered if it would hurt anyone, but both he and McGee seemed just like normal. they drive me nuts with their food obsessions.

great to see you, linda! scooter's still our Poster Kitty for being the kibble-addict!

Oh dear, what a mischievous little devil you have now Linda! :o Good to hear his little foot is OK. Do you think he is craving the crunch or is it the carbs? If it's the crunch, there are varying types of freeze dried meats that could provide that. Or even small sections of raw chicken neck or chicken gizzards. Those last two are also good for keeping their teeth clean.

I agree with Julie that being kibble free made such a huge difference with Scooter that I'd want to keep him that way.

I can sympathize with having a food thief. Thank goodness Neko has come such a long way since her early days of diagnosis. The high numbers/acromegaly combo meant DH and I learned to keep our kitchen counters very clean. I even had to change from Worlds Best litter to walnut based cause she was licking the corn litter. Ewww!

Hi Linda,
I hope that Scooter's paw will heal quickly. Interesting that he went right back on the stove. The thought of food trumps the fear of flame!!

Have a good evening. I hope that you will find a food that satisfies!!

Hi Linda,

Did you ever buy one of those balls to put the treats in it and see if that would peek his curiosity for a few hours? Besides wanting to steal the human food, he is very intelligent and wants to know about a lot.

I think you might have to invest in some type of toys that make a cat "think." I don't know what those would be but it would probably get him to stop thinking so much about food.

Do you have one of those cat trees? You must have with 13 cats...

Hi Linda:

So nice to hear from you, although I'm sorry it was because Scooter got himself into trouble. I agree with the others that kibble is a bad idea. When Cinco went OTJ, he would swipe a little here and there, and he still had good numbers. Pretty soon I was lazy about closing the door to the pantry, where the kibble bowl was, and then I got lax about testing him, and before you know it, he was in the 300s and in trouble again! There were other factors besides the dry food that caused him to fall out of remission, but I know all that kibble did not help one bit.

I agree you need to find things to exercise his brain. I love that he's no longer a "little old man"!

Sending healing vines for those paws. Don't be a stranger!
