5/19 Darcy PM +1 286 vet update

Come on, Darcy, make me look good :cat: That's what I just said to him a few minutes ago while he was MUNCHING away at the food dish. Did y'all catch that. He's eating! Now he has hiccups as he is lying here beside me. He has already eaten a full can of his renal food (3.5 oz. and some kibble... yes he is allowed to eat what he wants for the time being). All of this eating was without any anti-nausea medications (that he usually gets every day). I don't know if he will keep this up all day, but hopefully he won't need any of those meds today. I'm (cautiously) optimistic about our vet visit today. I will post numbers here after we get home. We need to keep an eye on his white count (it was on the rise again, although within normal limits) and his hematocrit (which was low and has been steadily dropping since fall) in addition to the kidney function tests. Now that I have a HUGE spreadsheet with blood values going back to last Fall when he was admitted to the ER, I can see a lot of trends. So needless to say, this spreadsheet is so wide that I would need a super wide computer monitor to view it (lots of scrolling left and right.)

Wish us luck today. I am thinking of @Butters & Lyla today as they go to the vet this morning.

@Wendy&Neko I did update my signature. Thanks for reminding me! I meant to do that quite a long time ago and forgot. I guess there's a limit on how long your signature can be these days -- although I see people with longer signatures than mine... I used every character that the system would allow me.

Yay Darcy. Eating and good numbers. So happy to see this good news Suzanne :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Wonderful news that your boy is eating. Nice blues today, Suzanne. Did Darcy get any fluids? I always found that Simon ate better after the fluids.
Yes. Gave fluids this morning and he will get some more this evening. He's still eating! Thank you, Summer. You had an interesting day. I hope your evening will allow you some rest.

I'm so happy to hear that Darcy is eating! Such a relief. I hope the fluids help him feel so much better. Is he still at the vet getting fluids? Your title says "vet update" but I can't find it.

Well, the bloodwork is modestly improved. BUN down from 111 to 102. Creatinine down from 5.4 to 5.0. Phosphorus unfortunately was increased from 3.2 to 7.4 so that's not good and I guess I will have to add the binders back in (even though he's eating mainly renal foods). I had discontinued the phos. binders at the recommendation of the CKD group since his phos was low... now it's borderline high.

His hematocrit continues to drop though -- not good -- but my vet doesn't like to start ESAs to bring that back up until his HCT hits 20 (I don't really agree with this, but she's pretty adamant about it as I have known from previous cats.) He's been very chipper today though. Looks good. Happy. Still eating.

Soooo... I don't know if he will ever recover from this. I was hoping it was acute kidney injury but it may just be renal failure that will get worse over time. I have no idea. I may have to accept that he will never recover from this. But for now, I am going to stay in the fight. We will recheck on June 2.

Now about those glucose numbers. I let him go all afternoon with no R to get a better idea of what this dose can do (pinks). But at least I know. Gave a little R at +11 and it helped. Thank you to everybody who has posted encouraging thoughts and comments and prayers. Darcy sends his love to you all!

No. He just went to the vet today for a blood recheck. I just posted the news. He's home.

I'm not sure. Her +2 was only 2 points lower than the PMPS. I fed 1/2 can of l/c at +2 and left 1/4 can of l/c for +5.5. I have my alarm set for +5.5. Hope I don't wake up to another really low AMPS again. But this is about Mr. Darcy. I'm sorry you did not get the blood test results you wanted - across the board. He did have some encouraging improvements in numbers and I happy to hear that he was eating today. We do the best we can for our pets. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Don't lose faith. When you lose that you lose everything. Praying that both of you have a quiet and peaceful night. I know you both need it.

Thank you Summer. Love to you.

Glad to see Mr Darcy has his appetite back and some improvement with his numbers - and hey, he came home from the vet visit! That is always in the back of my mind now, at least. Hope you got some good sleep last night and same again tonight.

I am so excited to see the big big news about eating! Yippee! Ruby needs to get some lessons from Mr Darcy. Happy to hear about the improved kidney values as well. Have you ever thought about giving Darcy niacinamide? Was reading about it here as an alternative to phos binders: https://www.rawfeedingforibdcats.org/feline-ckd-niacinamide-in-phosphorus-control.html
Yes to niacinamide! I have two bottles here that I ordered about two weeks ago. I was going to start him on it but then his phos went lowish. I think I will start him on 50 mg.
