Sorry for the really late post. Had to pick up the bupe today, and the vet was close to my DS so she picked it up for me.,.. long visit at her house.

Got home and Daphne didn't eat all day, she just slept. So I got a reading cause I knew it would be high, I know now that if Daphne doesn't eat, her pacrease won't kick in and so it was 126 at +10, then I gave her a tbsp of EVO and it came down at PMPS, like usual.

:?: Question, the bupe is in a syringe and it says "U 40, 20 units,on the syringe (I'm not injecting it, I'm going to put on her gums, so I want to make sure I give her the right amount). The label on the bag says, Buprenorphine 0.15ml Per Ml - Qnty:4, 10 dosing syringes. Each syringe contains one dose for Daphne's pain. Can repeat 8-12 hours as needed." It seems like a lot of liquid, to get into her mouth for the full dose of .15ml (Marje, if you read this, I know you said, everyone uses the .3ml), so I'm really not sure how much to give her, it just seems like a lot to rub on gums or pouch without her swallowing it.

Hi Barb,

Is the Bupe narcotic? How is Daphne? Has she had bad pain the past couple of days? It's been dry and sunny here but cooler. Sorry I can't help you with Bupe. Never used it. I hope someone comes on soon to answer your question & Daphne gets relief from the meds.

Oh Melanie thanks, and yes its a narcotic and actually Daphne is pretty good today because I guess we have your weather, nice, sunny and dry. But the past week, not sure when it was when we had two days of rain, Daphne really hurt bad. She has arthritis and I only notice her in pain when it rains. So we will have it ready for her when it rains, I think on Monday. So I'm not giving it to her until then, so I guess I should have put "no hurry" on my post. I can also call the vet on Monday, my DS picked it up from the vet for me…
 
Barb, I hope someone comes on to help you. There are others here that use bupe, including myself.

My vet gives me prefilled syringes of .1ml....that's really only a tiny amount.
My syringes hold 1ml

It can be rubbed on gums , put under tongue, or as I do, slowly squirt in cheek pouch.

I wouldn't know how to measure, having the syringes you have.

Barb thanks, I can always talk to vet on Monday, but it may start to rain on Sunday night. The thing is, I only used this vet one other time and I don't trust easily, and I had to tell her what I wanted and she just didn't seem like she had a ton of experiance with it.

Oh, brother, why is it so hard to find a competent vet around here! :roll:
 
When I've used bupe with Gabby, when I gave it orally, it was not in a U40 syringe. I used a U100 syringe and it didn't have a needle on the end. It's also not something you can effectively rub on her gums. It's meant to be shot into a cheek pouch or under the tongue.

Bupe can also be given as a subcutaneous injection -- just like insulin.
 
Barb, I am sorry Daphne is not feeling comfortable with her back pain. The weather really has a big influence on our kitties. Hope you get the correct dosage on the bupe for her soon. Is there any other vet you can call to check & make sure?
Dont worry, it might not rain on your Sunday night! Is your weather forcast that accurate? Our's isn't! :lol:

I've never heard of getting it in a U40 syringe. A U40 syringe has 40 units per ml so if you were to give .15ml, it should be predrawn to six units. But I understood that U40 syringes come with the needles on like Sienne said? And you would not want to put that in her mouth.

Can you call your pharmacist that you know well? I would not give Daphne any bupe until you are 100% certain the dose is safe and I am not comfortable just assuming that six units would be the same as .15ml. They should have given you just standard syringes marked in tenths of mls.
 
I am getting the bupe from my vet, in a vial, and he gives me a syringe to draw the bupe out with, and then I take off the needle and give it orally. The syringe looks big. It says 1ml at the bottom and has 10ths marked on it with big lines, with 10 little lines between each 10th.
My pescription says to give 0.1ml as needed. I was started by giving half that (0.05ml) of the bupe and found that was too much, as it made J.D. very wobbily. I closed the basement door, so he wouldn't try to go down the stairs, and during the day I closed the bedroom, so he would jump up on and off of my bed.
The last time I gave him bupe, I gave him 0.02 and it did not affect his walking.
You might want to try less if the 1.5ml seems like it's too much.
I would definitely ask the vet or pharmacist to make sure you get the dose right.
 
Thanks Sienne, Helen, Marje and Dyana, I'm a little confused and will not use the bupe untill I speak to my pharmacist and even take it in to him, and probably talk to the vet on Monday. Thats why I posted the quesition, I never will take a chance when it comes to my little girl. She is not in pain now and hopefully the rain will hold off a bit, (and yes, Helen, our weather forecast really are pretty accurate, at least I think so anyway, but I hope they are wrong).

Dyana, I know I live about 20 min. from you, but I was just wondering, do you have a good vet? This is just ridiculous when I can't trust a vet around me. Amy and I both have been to almost everyone in our area. We both had to "settle" on one, but I am completely fed up with them. Amy has one at a vet I used to go to, and I did not like the owners, but I may try the one vet there, who Amy said she liked.

I'd suggest sending a PM with your question to Dyana. She's not on the Board late at night and will have missed your question.

Given that this is arthritis, have you considered Adequan? It takes a while to work but it may offer more overall relief and then you can use bupe only on really bad days.
 
Thanks again, Sienne, I forgot to check my post today, so I just saw this. Yes, I talked to Amy (Trixie), she has another kitty with arthritis and I am going to start to use that, I just wanted fast relief now for Daphne and then look at the Adequan, and I also don't like to introduce two meds at the same time in order to check for side effects, so I'm working on the bupe, and then will address the other.

Please don't worry if you don't hear from me for a day or so, I'm working on a migraine starting now, and I know its going to get worse soon. I think I'm going to have to enlist DH and DS to help, and sorry, I can't get them to post for me.

I'll update on Daphne when I can. Thank you LL for your help.
