I got up this morning at 4:15 and didn't see Champ around, but now I know where to look and there he was...under my desk. He looked at me with his sleepy blinky eyes, and promptly went back to sleep. He has a very prompt internal alarm clock. At precisely 5:55, he got up from under my desk and laid down in the doorway of my office, knowing he was getting fed at 6. I don't know how he does it, but every morning he tells ME when it's time to feed, poke, shoot. I don't know why I bother to have the alarm set on my phone anymore...I haven't needed it in a while.

Last night wasn't as long a process as the night before, thank goodness!! I do think he would have been able to go lower, but he was so hungry that he ate 3/4 of a can of FF (2-3%) over the course of 2 hours (3 pokes). I'm going to boil up more chicken today so I have that to give him for pokes. I ran out over the weekend and have been too busy to make more. I really want to be brave enough to let him get to the greens, but he seems to only have lower BGs at night and, because I'm on the west coast, there's usually no one around for hand-holding. I think I could take care of it myself, but its just a scary process.

I actually got four hours of sleep last night which is double what I got the two nights before!!! And my workday shouldn't be as busy so I'll probably have time to lie down and sleep today, not just nap. My DD actually checked Champ's BG last night and did it first poke!! So now there's no excuse for her to not do it more often, like when I want to go to bed!!!

I hope everyone has a spectacular hump day. Work is going to keep me busy until the late morning and then I get to come back and visit condo's...my favorite part of the day. I think I'll visit some I've never visited before, make some new friends. :-D

Re: 5/18 Champ AMPS 344

Good Morning! it is so nice to see Champ getting into the blues.
can't even image having an entire day of green and not wanting to test every half-hour!! You can tell you've been at this for awhile.

You'll start to get used to it too, but the low numbers are scary at first. You will start to see Champ's patterns, how fast he's coming down, what point in the cycle the low number comes, ……. I test a lot so I've got tons of data. I can see her patterns, know that a low number early gets more monitoring and different treatment then one at or near nadir. You'll get there, hopefully it won't take you as long as it's taken us. I'll PM you my phone number and you can call me if you have a late night panic and no one is online.

Re: 5/18 Champ AMPS 344

Good morning Patty and Champ! I know what you mean about low numbers.

My vet insists that she wants Tarragon between 200 and 300 for every shot. I think she is thinking more generic and that most people aren't testing in between so she doesn't want him to dip too low without knowing it. Of course, I can't be around most days during the week to test, so I am pretty comfortable with her reasoning right now. I do try and do one night curve a week and then a weekend full curve.

Hope you all have a great day!

Re: 5/18 Champ AMPS 344, +2 310

QUESTION: The last few nights when Champ has gone down into the 100's, I've noticed that he's extremely hungry. Is this normal and should I feed him? I would like to encourage him to get to the safest low numbers possible, but it's really hard not to feed him when he acts like he's starving. Also, he seems kind of frenetic, like a hyperactive little kid, when his numbers get into the low 100's. He can't seem to sit still. If this normal?

One other question...I've mentioned this before, but now I want to see if anyone has any answers: Champ's left front leg wobbles when he sits and first puts pressure on the leg. When I tap the inside of his leg, there is definite giveway of the leg. Also, it looks like that leg is skinnier than the right leg, like there's been muscle wasting. It also seems to me that he's not walking as high on his toes as I would think he should. I never noticed how he walked before because, before his diabetes diagnosis, I never worried about neuropathy. His vet said cats don't show signs of neuropathy until their BGs are very high and Champ being in the 300's doesn't qualify. I'm wondering if that is true or if it's an out-of-date idea. I've heard of methyl-B12 and am wondering if I should start Champ on this. Is this is a supplement that can cause any adverse reactions? Do I just get it at any store that sells vitamins? Is there a different methyl-B12 for cats and humans?

Any answers to the above questions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys ... yes, those first few nights of green can be scary, but before you know it you'll be seeing green and going on about your business .. you'll find champ can handle his own after awhile :-D No answer on the B 12 but I do know a lot of people use it here .. have a great day guys!

Re: 5/18 Champ AMPS 344, +2 310

Good Morning you two.. Seems as though things are going well for Champ this morning, coming down nicely again.. The time zone thing does put a hamper on communicating some times. I do not like that either. That's really cool that Ann will be around if you need some late night advice..

I think your daughter having her first poke and test under her belt will have her being a pro in no time... More sleep for the bean is never a bad thing.. :-D
I hope that you have wonderful Day Patty.

Re: 5/18 Champ AMPS 344, +2 310

Hi Patty!

I can answer your question!

Leo has neuropathy in his hind legs along with muscle wasting. Which what made me bring him into the vet in the first place....not drinking, not peeing lots, just skinny with muscle wasting. He didn't have neuropathy then, but it started the first week I had him on Lantus and has gotten progressively worse since. I called a few vets and even went to the vet college here, and posted a few times on the main forum. All the answers I got was B12 and regulate, it takes time. Leo's vet told me in 6 months with good regulation it should subside. He has his bad days and ok days, depending on how much sleep he's gotten and we notice him walking on his kitty toes when he's in nice blue numbers. When he's in nasty reds it seems much worse. You can buy methylcobalamin, but NOT cobalamin, it cannot have xylitol in it (toxic to kitties) I found some in a herbal store, took a lot of searching for me tho. I dose Leo with 4mg a day. Usually I crush it up, add water and put in his food. For Leo the B12 isn't working but I still do it. You can give anywhere from 3-5 mg a day.

Answer your question?

I'm loving Champs numbers at night btw. And have an awesome day!!

Re: 5/18 Champ AMPS 344, +2 310

Ooops forgot to tell you its human methyl B12 you can use. Its pretty much impossible to overdose them on B12, the body uses what it needs and the rest is excreted in urine.

Can you tell I've done a crapload of studying on the subject? LOL

Re: 5/18 Champ AMPS 344, +2 310

i just watched punkin go sniff 3 little floor cooties, in case they were food. none of them were - and he just ate 1/2 can FF and finished anya's dish, probably another 1/4 can. i think some cats are just hoovers, but i don't give in to it because it seems like he would just keep eating. he doesn't need to gain any weight!

usually there's a west coaster on here til about 2am pacific time and then east coasters are getting up. most times i've been up at night there is someone on. as long as you have confidence that you can give high carb food or karo and they'll respond, and you are in control, it's not so bad.

Lookin' good there Champ!

And Patty, yes, the green can be scary at first - I went through it last night! My biggest fear is that I won't be home to catch the drop, but it looks like you've got things covered. Just read up on the low number shooting before you need it! My problem is I can't remember what I read

You're doin' great (oh, and you too Champ :-D )

Re: 5/18 Champ AMPS 344, +2 310, +5 274, +7 258

Hi Patty -

wow, alot going on here today. yes the greens can be scary, but you do get used to the lower numbers. What used to scare me no longer does. I have a ton of data, and after a while you get to know the patterns and how your kitty will react. Mannie too can act very hungry when he is low, like green low - he knows he needs to eat. Depending on where we are in the cycle he usually gets fed, or at least a snack. By then I would be monitoring anyways, and know if he needs food.

can't help with the b12 - have not had that issue, Good luck!
