Shaikha is back home and very happy to be there according to my friend. She stayed with my vet all weekend and on Monday in an effort to get her regulated. He not only changed the insulin dose but he also put her on a canned food he thought she'd tolerate since he didn't have the food she'd been eating on hand. The good news is that she not only ate it but it also seemed to agree with her. She's eaten it before (Hills i/d) but she'd stopped eating it after the second can and turned up her nose at it after that so I'd given up, but she was awfully sick with pancreatitis at the time too and likely was nauseated, which then leads to food aversions. The i/d is a bit high in fat for her pancreatitis though (47% fat, 24% carbs), so I'm thinking about trying her back on some other canned foods she's eaten in the past that agreed with her. Who knows, maybe I can get her back on the Hills d/d duck & green pea (22.3% carbs, 29.1% fat) or Royal Canin venison (23% carbs, 23% fat). It may not last, but I'm sure the canned food has helped a lot with regulation as well.
He's got her on 3 units AM and PM and so far has been happy with how that has worked since Saturday. He hasn't had to do interim doses, but said Sunday night she stayed lower longer than he expected so he kept her through Monday to ensure she didn't do rebounding. I am so grateful he's taken such good care of her. It's been a load off my mind and my friend's. I do think keeping her in a quieter place has helped. She's a sweet girl, just very timid. He also said he was going to watch my friend give a shot to ensure she's shooting in the correct place and mixing the insulin correctly.
So, that's the news. Hopefully now that she's home she'll be okay with the food changes and her glucose levels will stay lower they they have been. We may need to do some tweaking, but hopefully not experience the awful swings we've had. She hasn't gone above 300 since Saturday, so that's a very good thing, and even her lowest lows have not been that low (178). She's still not where he wants her, but it will take some time. If she continues to have issues then we'll switch insulins after I return most likely. Very happy mama bean here. I was really worried about my girl, but hopefully she's gotten through the worst of it.
