Hi All!

Last "Welcome Home New Kitty Mako Condo"

Introductions are going *very* slowly, as Leo didn't develop terrific social skills as a kitty in the wild. His tendency to stalk Molly has us concerned that he may view Mako as a threat rather than a buddy. They have sniffed under the door quite extensively, I've exchanged socks and they all smell each other on us. They've seen each other through the open door with Mako being restrained. Leo hangs around a bit then runs off. I hadn't been able to get Leo comfortable enough to eat even the TASTIEST snack anywhere upstairs in the hall near the door. He did get into one stalking position, but has been wary. We've been trying 1 exposure (or maybe 2) times a day.

I've been reading the "Think Like a Cat" book and decided to do the screen door method. We took the back screen door out of the track and put that in front of Mako's door, but I had to hold it because it was slightly too small! Mako stood at attention right at the screen, wanting to get out, and checking out Leo. Leo was again wary, but actually came up and ate two little pieces of yummy warm chicken! GREAT PROGRESS. DH makes machinery that is used to make screen frames, so he made a custom sized one for the door to Mako's room. It's just taped up, not installed. He took a couple pictures the other night for the first "unrestrained" introduction.

Leo and Mako actually touched noses! Neither showed aggression! Mako wanted so much to get out - he's a bored kitty and knows there is excitement outside his "cell." Leo hung out for a couple minutes and then just walked away! MAJOR progress! So, little bits at a time!

First nose-to-nose meeting with neither cat restrained
Although Leo remains in his crouched wary position, poor nervous guy, at least he isn't howling his house-shattering wails like he does at the neighborhood boys!

Morning Lisa ~O) ~O) ~O)

Woo HOO! We have progress! I love the screen door idea, and nice to see they are making good use of it. I see good buddies on the horizon. :-D LOVE the pics!

Paws crossed all continues as planned (haha PLANNED! Like a cat every cares about plans!)

Mako is throwing himself against the screen to get out. DH is going to let him loose downstairs tonight while Leo and Molly are locked in their respective rooms. Updates will continue ... I wish I was there!!!

Hi Lisa,
It sounds like slow progress is being made. When will you get to see them all together?
I'd like to get "Think like a Cat". The problem is that Rusty thinks like a bean!!

Have a great evening. Thanks for all your visits to Rusty's condo.

Hugs from us,

Ella & Rusty

Great news on the integration! DH is doing a wonderful job with that. I like the idea of a screen door. I have used a baby gate so I could climb over into the room and still leave it up. But years ago I discovered an old, arthritic, but determined cat could still hop over a baby gate.

Letting Mako out so shed some more scent is a good idea. If the house layout allows it, the other kitties could be let into Mako's room at the same time. Keep us posted. I'm always eager to hear what works.

Update: Last night DH left the screen up and door open for about 20 minutes. After some sniffing and no noise, he heard a bit of activity and came up to see what was going on. Here's what he texted me, "Leo was right in front of the screen in a meatloaf position and Mako was on the bed...they were just staring at one another. When I went up, Mako came to the screen and Leo just got up and left...no hisses, Mako didn't seem scared ... then Mako got loose by squeezing past my leg and the door jam. He went straight to Leo's room and went under the bed for a while until he saw the teddy bear on the rocking chair and got very curious...that was my chance to pick him up and take him back to his room."

Good news continues!

HI Ella - I don't know about all together - we have been concentrating on Mako and Leo primarily, so we will introduce them first. Molly may always be separated from them when we are not there - the goal is to have Mako keep Leo from trouncing on her. Thanks for the hugs - we are collecting them up for the kitties! We won't try together until I get home next Thursday, but DH will be swapping rooms more, but he is coming for the weekend because our family is traveling for a race.

Hi Wendy - DH is doing a great job. I thought about a baby gate but they were pretty expensive for this short use, and yeah, Mako is already jumping pretty high!!! DH will continue to swap rooms, but there will be no more interactions until Monday night. Poor Mako will be going nuts in the room this weekend alone :-( The sitter will be coming twice a day to play with all of them.

Hi Rhiannon - Leo's numbers are good, which had me worried! Still nice and green - 55 yesterday morning.

Hi Marje - thanks! I love my boys! :-D
