Last week's condo

BGs seem to be creeping up. I don't think there are bouncies involved; looks like both her onset and nadir have moved back with the new cartridge. But we can't really be sure, since we're not home to poke during the workday. Whatever's causing the up-creep, we'll take it in stride. The whole cat is what we focus on; she doesn't care about some silly numbers  (But I'll start freaking out just a little if she goes above her renal threshold again ;-) )

WCR: Sleeping a lot more, but still bright-eyed and perky-eared when she's awake. She purred me awake this morning, and then took a wonderful long nap with me mid-morning  This evening's weather was lovely, and she had a bit of outside time, including a half-hr stroll in her stroller. We saw lots of birds on our stroll, a chipmunk, and at one point, two young bunnies chasing each other round and around, darting here and there - I saw her follow their movements with her head, so it must have interested her somewhat. Made me a happy bean

Syringe-feeding has improved again, now we've figured out what the problem was last week. Her daddybean has not been able to bend over to feed her for another two more weeks, post-surgery, so we had been feeding her on the dining table. Seems she couldn't get a good enough grip to stand/sit on it, with her weak hind legs, and has been slipping and sliding. All that pawing at us was not to fight off the food syringe, but was from nervousness because she couldn't stand/sit firmly. Adding a towel under her only helped a little, so this morning we decided to try feeding her back on the floor, but with me sitting beside her, and daddybean in front of her with the food syringe. Problem solved. She barely needed any restraining - all I had to do was gently position her head if she started backing off - and overall, she was a very, very good girl.

I noticed a week back that her coat's been looking really nice again, after months of shedding and flyaway fur whenever I petted her. And this evening, I checked her tail, and there was minimal - almost none - gunk on it. Her tail looks pretty and fluffy again. Asked DH to look, and he thinks there's no more stud tail. We think improvements in both fur and tail probably has to do with her better-quality food now (Wellness ever since we started syringe-feeding, was Friskies before that), the extra fish oil, or her supplements. Could be any of that, but I'm betting on the food ... She still gets a little junky food during the day at lunch - we leave out 1/2 oz of non-Wellness, and sometimes she eats it (yay!), other times not. This week's Royal Canin rx renal food (I know, I know, but she likes it, and it's the lower carb pouch) was well-received; last week's Healthy Indulgence with Duck and Shrimp wasn't, the prior week's Healthy Indulgence with Crab and Herring was. We'll keep rotating flavours, some not as great quality, just so she gets a little variety (no more than 1/2 oz per day), but we plan to have Wellness be her main source of calories as long as we syringe-feed.

Speaking of food, we're down to the last 11 cans of FF Gourmet Chicken Feast. We stretch out each can for about 12 days. I'm dreading having to break the news to her in four months' time that her beloved FF flavour cannot be found anymore. nailbite_smile The same goes for her RC renal food (pouch) - the line was discontinued late last year and we're down to our last 8 pouches. nailbite_smile

Haven't gotten her weight since we cut back her food by 1/8 oz. Maybe I'll remember tomorrow morning before SQuids. Oh, I explained to her a couple of nights ago that a diet means less food and less treats, not less food and more treats - and she bit me

Oh, and an update on our meter saga: Cheryl and Winnie has very kindly offered to send us a OTU meter that had been used by a very special kitty one time, to replace ours that had met its untimely end when DH mistook it for a rice sock (!) and nuked it. We are looking forward to being able to see 14-day and 30-day averages of silly numbers once again; I never really paid that much attention to them before, but sort of miss it now that they're not there anymore. Thank you, Cheryl (& Winnie!)

Did she draw some blood?

Nice report CF. Glad that she's doing well.

Glad to see that Meowzi is eating better for you. Hopefully she'll surprise you and won't object too much when her favourites aren't available anymore. I t sounds like she really loves her stroller. I'd love to get one for Tori. Take care.

I love a good Meowzi report.

There is some kind of Royal Canin renal food available in a pouch. I just got a sample from my vet a couple of weeks ago (she was recommending it for Mickey due to lower sodium). Hmm, maybe I should check for an expiration date. I wasn't planning to feed it anyway but maybe she gave me old stuff. Hmm... And 12 days for a can of Fancy Feast? OMG. I don't think a can of FF lasts 12 seconds in this house.

Heather - nope, she didn't draw blood. She only does that there's a vet professional involved  Was just a warning nip, to tell me she disagreed and wanted MORE treats ;-)

If it's the same as what we have, it probably has an expiration date of Jan or Feb 2010  The last batch made expired Feb 2010, no more after that - I remember reading posts from desperate beans on the CRF group. Ours is Jan 2010 (yes, I'm feeding old stuff! But she'll eat it! And I can't get any more new or old stuff!) Think RC came out with a new formula, canned, but haven't tried that yet.

It's ultra-highin phos, so the only time she gets it is 1/8 oz in morning with her Azodyl, and another 1/8 oz in the evening with Azodyl and amlodipine. No idea how I'll get Azodyl into her when this runs out. Amlodipine should be quite easy, is small tasteless pill, and just learned tonight it can be compounded into treats. Anyway, rationing just a smidgen twice a day makes it a special treat for her, and ensures she'll finish her meds. I'm a devious mommybean

well the things i learned in this condo. i knew about r.c. from vet journals but had no idea FF was dc'ing classic chx? why? gee that must disappoint plenty of kitties around the country.
you can't find more cases of the chx FF around? i know i just saw rows and rows of it at my pet food store since i do not recognize any of the new FF labels and have to read them all when i was looking to replace some of SD's HC FF that monster kitty swiped. you want me to snag a case for you? although one can lasting 12 days, a case might expire before you guys get around to using it, lolol.

you saw two bunnies playing? don't you think that should have been post TITLE? sigh, is like only the cutest thing in the world.

glad you figured out what was causing the syringe feeding troubles. makes total sense. but gee, isn't working on floor hard on you too? what about (just thinking out loud) a "feeding box" on top of table? like a wooden box or bottom of carrier or something so that her back is against it so no sliding, can line with towel (tucked in so towel doesn't slide) so she has grip and easy to wash towel.
i'm fading hard at this hour so not even gonna look at SS, as long as you guys are under renal threshold and not going too low either all is well. if that changes, well, shout. i'm the lump under covers. lol. ni-ni!

ps. awesome about getting the very special replacement meter.
still no comment about DH nuking the old meter though. i just have no words....

Is DH trying to tell you something? Would have loved to have seen the realization that he just nuked the meter instead of the rice sock.
