Well. She ate a decent breakfast - I had to encourage her a little to finish because it wasn't her current favorite, but at least it was kitten food, which seems to be something she likes. My Big White Cat finished the rest of Kasha's can of kitten food, so he's eating again today (yesterday was a bad day for him). Then I opened another can to encourage him to eat some more and gave a Tbsp to Kasha - she ate most of that up too, so she had a pretty good breakfast after all.

Waiting for a call back re: antibiotics for Kasha's UTI. Just called to follow up and they said they would give me a call back so I can pick up the ABs before they close for the day (they close earlier on Fridays). I'm a little concerned about getting Kasha to take the ABs. The last few times she got the Convenia shot so I didn't have to try to get anything into her. But she is notoriously hard to pill - I remember sitting on the floor with her thyroid meds a few years ago, just in tears because I couldn't get her to swallow the pill. I've been pilling Big White Cat for weeks now, so I've gotten in some practice, but he's a piece of cake compared to Kasha.

Ok - vet prescribed Baytril for Kasha - it's an e. coli infection. I'll pick up the bottle at lunch, but won't try to dose her till tonight. I'm kind of worried about getting the pills down her (they are giving me a piller, though I've never used one before), but we'll see how it goes. Anyone have any experiences with Baytril that they can share?

Also picking up some Fortiflora. Sienne mentioned that cats like it and anything that encourages Kasha to eat is welcome. Plus if it were me, I would never take ABs without probiotics, so Kasha gets them too.

Do they offer a liquid form of Baytril? If so, it is easier to 'squirt' it into her mouth than pilling a cat (a my pilling experiences would have made for great video).

You might want to try Pill Pockets if Kasha is hard to pill. Others have put pills in cream cheese, Laughing Cow cheese, shoved into a piece of chicken, wrapped in a piece of deli meat, etc.

Re: 5/14 Kasha AMPS 516 Baytril prescribed

Yeah - last time I tried to pill her, she got wise to the pill pockets, cheese, etc. really quick. She can separate meat, cheese, pill pockets etc. from the pill so fast - I swear she could probably tie cherry stems into a knot with her tongue. She's also excellent at figuring out that I'm hiding something and then wants nothing to do with it. And the pill pockets have corn syrup and flour in them I thought, so I'd prefer to avoid that if at all possible... I do have them on hand as a backup, though.

So - I'm going to try to pill her with the piller or my fingers and try to get her to just swallow the stuff. I have one of the vet tech/nurses coming over tonight to change Blue's bandage, so if I have real problems, she can probably give me a hand this time. I just don't need Kasha to start trying to hide from me. But you never know - maybe all my practice pilling Big Cat will come in handy.

The vet said that if you get a compounded (liquid) version of the Baytril, it still just tastes so bad that it just makes the whole experience worse.

I remember when she was a couple of years old and had some infection - they gave her the bubble-gum flavored amoxicillin and I would just mix it in canned food. Back then, canned food was such a treat that she would just gobble it down. Those were the days...

Logan got wise to the pill pockets very quickly, too, but we now roll them in the fortiflora and he'll eat them. He knows the pills are in them, but he loves fortiflora. He actually squints his eyes in anticipation of biting into them pill but generally chews through it. Best of luck with the pilling. Logan is on several meds and not all can fit into the pill pockets so I do have to pill him, too. I've learned to sit behind him, show him the pills, and then come in from the side of his mouth and try to get my finger in as far back as possible so that it just goes right down - I do get bit a lot, though. The piller does help b/c you can get it into her mouth and then release the pill at the back of her throat. I put some of his pills into gelcaps to make it a little easier to swallow. Just be sure to give her a food or water chaser afterwards to make sure the pill goes down and doesn't get lodged in her esophagus.

FWIW, I tried the liquid baytril with one of my civvies years ago (he's virtually impossible to pill - only one out of 6 vets have been able to pill him!) and it didn't go over so well. It tastes awful! You might get it in the first or second time, but she'll learn to fight you on it, as well. Kitties!

Re: 5/14 Kasha AMPS 516 Baytril prescribed

go with liquid form and just add tuna juice in the syringe.
I don't do pills for either of my cats, and the squirt method works great!

I drew up the amount the vet rx, then double that amount in tuna juice/water.
Squirt and down it goes. The nice taste muffles the crap one.

Re: 5/14 Kasha AMPS 516 Baytril prescribed

Ah - that Fortiflora sounds like it will be awesome - assuming Kasha likes it (she likes to be difficult).

Thanks for confirming the nastiness of the liquid Baytril - at least I'm not missing out on that!

Just an aside: I see Logan is/was taking prednisone for IBD? Do you give the 2.5 mg once a day or is that divided into 2 doses? Just asking cuz I'm giving my Big White Cat between 5 and 10 mg per day of prednisone right now and I'd like to reduce it further. He has some inflammatory issues, not sure which ones, but at this point, prednisone seems to help and I'm just trying to keep him comfortable.

Ok - this is now my backup plan. Is tuna juice just the juice from canned tuna? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question, I don't eat tuna or anything like that so I don't know... For all I know, I can just buy a big bottle of tuna juice...

Check with Michelle/Scrabble. They were on 2 weeks of liquid Baytril her vet had compounded for her adding tuna flavor, i think.

Pmps 93 yay! Vet called & his antibiotic will be ready tomorrow @ 2. They are compounding it into a liquid & adding tuna flavor :). I am praying the ab will not affect his numbers!!!! He will be on it for 2 weeks! Keep your paws crossed for a good outcome!:)

They did really well on it with no BG increseases. (in fact shortly thereafter he went OTJ!)

Re: 5/14 Kasha AMPS 516 Baytril prescribed

HI GUYS! Yes Scrabble was on the liquid form of Baytril which was very easy to administer. The compounding pharmacy which made it for us added triple tuna flavor to the ab so I don't think that it tasted bad. When I filled the syringe it smelled just like tuna and Scrabble didn't seem to mind it. You can probably ask the pharmacy about adding the flavor to it. The particular pharmacy that the vet uses specialized in compounding animal ab so they were very familiar with adding flavors cats would like. The liquid is very easy to administer and Scrabble always swallowed it and I gave him treats right after. HOpe this helps, good luck! PM me if you have any questions!

Logan is still on prednisolone but we are weaning him off - it just wasn't enough to control the IBD. He's been on Leukeran for a little over a month now and is finally doing better! His current dose is 2.5mg once a day. His internist likes to get them down to once a day so their adrenal gland starts to recognize that it needs to start working again. He's been on the pred for several months now. Our next dose will be 2.5mg every other day. I''m sure you could cut the 5mg tablets into quarters if you wanted to do less than 2.5mg for a dose.

I would prefer to give Logan liquid meds b/c it is safer than pilling, but he's awful with liquids. He turns into a little demon cat and he's worse each time. He's much better with pilling. I just make sure he has food right afterwards.

Well, I tried to pill her. I dipped the pill in butter, gave up on the piller and put it in her mouth while she tried to push me away with her paws. The pill disappeared. My parents were over, watching. We looked everywhere so... either she swallowed it or she is a cat magician of some sort, practicing some pretty amazing sleight of hand. I gave her one feline greenie after the pill as a reward. I know that greenies are evil, but she needed something special for being so good. Now, unless I find that pill somewhere later: 1 down, 13 more to go.

Then the vet tech/nurse stopped by to change Blue's bandage and I told her about what happened. She asked if i had the purple pills or the brown ones. Apparently the brown ones (which I have) are flavored - Baytril taste tabs. Did everyone know that but me? She said if I couldn't get it down her, I could crumble it on food...

Oh - Kasha likes the Fortiflora. So does Big Cat. I've got to get more of this stuff.
